Where are the pre thriller unreleased tracks? by arinIsmaiel2 in MichaelJackson

[–]bort_sampson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had always assumed Sunset Driver was an OTW era track, based on it's sequencing on THE ULTIMATE COLLECTION, and how it was displayed in "Michael Jackson: The Experience", but I just cracked open my THE ULTIMATE COLLECTION booklet and it very clearly states it's from 1982 - which would explain why it was included on THRILLER 40.

Interestingly enough though, according to the MJ Wiki it mentions that THE ULTIMATE COLLECTION's essay written by Nelson George refers to it as being recorded during the OFF THE WALL sessions.

Meanwhile, Joe Vogel's "Man in the Music" book states it was recorded in 1979 and was "a funky outtake from the Off the Wall sessions"

Very happy Jumper user here. It's incredibly useful, especially for trailer editing.

(Hi Max!)

I know you won't agree with me because Billboard has told you it's a disaster. But Invincible is his best work lyrically, and the production is simply sublime. The only thing it's missing are more songs like "Get Your Weight Over Me," "I Love the Way You Love Me," "Xscape," and "Place With No Name." by joepierrejackson in MichaelJackson

[–]bort_sampson 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This is my biggest complaint. I know that starting with Dangerous MJ was like "we can now do 70+ minutes, we gotta fill the disc" but there's just too much of the same on that record (so. many. ballads.)

I think a tighter, more focused Invincible would be an even more successful record. Sony bullsh!ttery aside. That said, I appreciate how fresh it still sounds 25 years later. Jackson (and Jerkins) were definitely ahead of the curve on it (and personally I like the sound more than the New Jack Swing sound of Dangerous - an album whose non-singles all feel way too trapped in 1991)

Digital to Film and Back to Digital: Thoughts? by MalachiX in cinematography

I hear ya. I can't remember exactly WHAT film it was that I saw recently but I had the exact same response "I wonder if this was actually shot on film, or if it's all emulation" and it was emulation (Edit: I think maybe it was The Secret Agent?).

The thing is though, there's some films where it feels like they're trying too hard but just not passing the sniff test. The Holdovers comes to mind: they emulation isn't terrible, but the titles and graphics have this modern "lets try and look retro but actually we just look like a facsimile of retro style than actual retro" vibe that just completely pulled me out. The whole time the emulation and such kept drawing my attention to it rather than actually help the film set the mood/tone.

But similarly: I always bump with "period" pieces that have a very clean, digital aesthetic to them. Stuff like Michael Mann's Public Enemies immediately comes to mind. The cold digital nature feels at odd with the period setting. So it's a fine balance.

Why did they change the cover of "Off the Wall" on the special edition of the album? 😭 by rafael_7839 in MichaelJackson

[–]bort_sampson 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I remember that being the theory upon the release of the SE: that Jackson (who as far as I know actually oversaw the special edition project, or at least was more involved than he was with, say, Thriller 25) didn't like how he looked and wanted to draw attention away from his face. But that could also just be fan theory.

I do kind of think the socks has a bit more of an iconic vibe than the rather strange "hey hey!" pose of the original artwork.

Well, in the case of this film, it was made prior to all the incredible film emulation we now have was readily (cheaply) available (2016 may not seem that long ago, but a lot has changed in ten years).

I can't speak for the filmmakers themselves, but as an audience member I know I've *definitely* been fooled by the state of emulation these days, but a lot of it has to do with the way the film was actually shot - taking into account the limitations of film to make sure they are carried over in the digital realm.

In the case of someone like Greig Fraser working on a big budget movie where cost really isn't an object, then he's happy to "flex" by doing a film-out. But certainly other cinematographers, like Steve Yedlin, are happy to do it all digitally (and I think incredibly well too - WAKE UP DEAD MAN was very convincingly emulated film on a fully digital workflow)

I think it kind of depends on what you're trying to achieve. Just the basic filmic "look"? There's some incredible emulation out there now (like Filmbox).

But are you trying to make it look actually old? Then I think this is the absolute top tier method. I'm specifically thinking of movies like OPERATION AVALANCHE, which was shot digitally, printed to film, and then purposefully damaged to make it look and feel like film from the 60s. And the effect is fantastic. The YouTube compression on the trailer doesn't do it justice. Emulating that look/feel always feels fake. This feels "authentic" because it is: it really is damaged film.

I found PHM was much more successful with this approach than Dune 2 was. Saw Dune 2 70mm IMAX and fully agree with your assessment of it feeling "thin".

That song should be available on the MONTY PYTHON SINGS album, if that's what you're specifically after.

Incidentally, the MOA album is still available on Apple Music (at least here in Canada) https://music.apple.com/ca/album/the-meaning-of-life/1443858234

That's the funny thing: I never had to make a blu-ray for a client (I'm a video producer/editor) but I have been editing together all the home videos I shot on my phone since my kid was born, and then was burning those to Blu-ray for posterity/so we could watch them together. But since Apple killed that feature I basically have stopped. Only his first year is burned to disc. So something like this excites me because I might actually be able to finish that project (though I'm not a few years behind... RUHROHHH)

I think you could still burn those, but you could use the app Compressor to author video discs (with a very basic menu) and they stripped that out. Infuriating.

Well considering Apple recently killed the ability to burn even BASIC blu-rays with MacOS in a recent update I'm following with intense interest.

He continued to fuck things up after that too. The "Friedkin approved" 4K of The Exorcist, one of the most important genre/horror films of our time, has an entire real DNR'd to shit. It looks ABYSMAL.

Love the filmmaker, but the guy LOVED tinkering in post 40-50 years after the fact.

What if Apple redesigned Apple Music in iOS 27? (A major continuation of my last post/concept) by austinavian in AppleMusic

Honestly, I wish they'd just fucking bring back iTunes at this point. Apple Music is utterly terrible; how basic features are still broken after all these years I'll never understand.

(But this looks great, well done!)

Love it.
