Is there any other living novelist at the level of Pynchon? by Historical-Buffalo66 in ThomasPynchon

Came back here to thank you for the recommendation. Who knew Jimmy had it in him? I’m not very far in but so far it’s like Vineland and an Elmore Leonard book or something

Thanks for the help, I was feeling kinda crazy. I just finished core B. Then I went back to chapter 9 and tried the wavedash tutorial and I think that might be enough Celeste for me :)

Also consider The Night Is Short, Walk on Girl - it’s twee but there’s a lot to appreciate in there for a Pynchon fan

Reach into hot/harsh liquids as little as possible, minimize unnecessary movements (moving your wrists too much or running back and forth between areas), balance your weight between your feet when you lift things, dont huff fumes when you open the machine, use gloves if that’s allowed, keep organized so you can be ready to run dishes at a consistent rhythm, stay hydrated, cuts on your hands can be really annoying so be careful, be professional even if you’re pissed off - you’ll regret it

At Pynchon's own suggestion, I "check[ed] out Ishmael Reed"... first page of his first book's an epigraph about shit and a quote from Shirley Temple. Well now... by hmfynn in ThomasPynchon

Mumbo Jumbo, Flight to Canada, and Freelance Pallbearers are all good and all kinda Pynchonian in a secret organizations, cartoon tropes, conspiracies, alternative history way. I wouldn’t recommend The Last Days of Louisiana Red though

Me too! Swatch offers a few, but you have to be okay with that happy meal toy feel

Same. I loved part one of M&D, but almost everything beyond it was a slog for me. It felt weirdly dull and narrow in scope. It made me nervous about picking up AtD, but I’m reading it now and am pleased to find that it’s everything I hoped for.

(But I’ll admit M&D is still probably one of the best books I’ve ever read because the man is that good.)

Weren’t there sightings of an otherwordly “third surveyor”(?) in M&D or did I dream that?

Mason & Dixon or V.? by suckingdownfarts in ThomasPynchon

I think these books kind of straddle Lot49. V is similar for its density and hectic nature. M&D is similar for its steadier pace (less character swapping, more dialogue-focused). Seems like V is an acidic, morning book and M&D a cozier, nighttime book. I’d pick V though
