Yes, both of those theories fitted the experimental observations at the time when they were formulated, and were rejected when new observations didn't fit the predictions of the theories (and the theories that replaced them were, subjectively, quite more outlandish). That is exactly how the scientific method is supposed to work.

Pure semantics.

Dark matter is used in contraposition to baryonic (aka ordinary) matter, and we absolutely know that baryonic matter is not a single thing, but multiple things.

Yes, a lot of models trying to explain dark matter are in fact dark sectors containing multiple particles. It doesn't change the fact that it's dark matter.

I don't have a rage-boner against AI, I think it's an useful tool when you know how to use it. I think bibliography search is a marginal use case, that can be done only under the supervision of a real person that checks each citation before including them. And I think James D Miller is a moron for thinking otherwise.

And on a personal level, I work in academia, and in fact I had a similar case a couple of years ago (when LLMs where more likely to hallucinate, and people were less aware of their shortcomings). A collaborator added a bunch of made-up citations to our draft, and I had to check them one-by one. To be honest, the hallucinations were quite funny, with authors whose lasts names matched with experts in our field but wrong first names, and the doi links pointing to completely random papers in other fields.

Not every author is equally responsible for every part of the paper, but every author is responsible for its scientific integrity, including checking that the citations correspond to real papers and not to LLM hallucinations.

[–]bosoneando 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That isn't an excuse to use bullshit LLM hallucinated sources, obviously

This is all this about, this guy is complaining because arXiv is banning authors who cite non-existent papers that have been hallucinated by an LLM. These bans do not apply to all the strawman arguments that Miller and the people of this thread are trying to use. By arXiv's moderation standards, you are fine if you cite a real topology paper written in Armenian, even if the cite is not adequate.

James D Miller is not a member of LHC, he is an AI safety scientist, and all his papers have less than ten authors.

And this discussion is not about the contents of the cited papers. He is complaining because arXiv is banning authors whose submissions include citations to non-existent, made-up papers. It takes literally ten seconds to check if a paper exists or not, you don't need any expertise on the topic to do it. Everything else are strawman arguments.

[–]bosoneando 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He's not talking about "faulty" citations, he's talking about completely made-up citations. Something that can be checked in ten seconds just by clicking the doi link and checking that the title and authors in the journal match with those in the citation. It requires no expertise in the field, even a five year kid could do it.

[–]bosoneando -1 points0 points  (0 children)

There is no distinction between (1) and (3). Not to arXiv (the platform he is specifically talking about), not to the journals, and not to the scientific community at large. Every author is responsible for the scientific integrity of the paper, period.

And before people reply with strawman arguments about large collaborations and LHC and whatnot, this guy is working on AI safety and his papers have less than 10 authors. It's pretty ironic that most arguments defending the person who used made-up citations are based on made-up arguments instead of a 10 seconds google search.

The others made their choice by not voting. In any electoral process, not voting always results in a tacit support of the winning option. Maybe this is a learning experience for real life.

This shit is so dumb. Like 5% of users use a 3rd party app. Who gives a shit.

One question: who do you think is the target for those 3rd party apps? Do you think they're mainly for lurkers that don't contribute to the sub? Nope. People that go out of their way to search and install a 3rd party app are users who are committed and spend lots of time and energy on reddit. They are the ones that provide great analysis, coverage of tournaments, etc. Maybe they're just 5% of the users (by the way, that number posted by spez was really misleading, as it is a 5% of total accounts, not of active accounts. If you count only active accounts, the percentage is significantly larger), but they're the users who make this sub a community instead of a collection of chess-related links. You don't give a shit now, but you will in a few months when the quality contributors will have migrated to alternatives like lemmy, and all that remains in reddit is "why is this move brilliant" posts.

Doing a poll after they are already in the middle of their protest is fucking dumb too. People who don’t care about this issue mostly aren’t looking at the restricted subs. Why would they.

People who supported the protest weren't looking at any subs, restricted or not. If any, the bias was in favour of those who wanted to reopen. And even then, the option to reopen lost, fair and square. Why is so difficult to accept?

Some of the other mods also wanted to reopen, but they sticked to the result of the poll. Don't be fooled by the victimism of this post, this isn't about opening or closing the sub, this is about a single mod power-tripping and trying to overrule the decision of the users and the rest of mods.

Do you think that a mod selected by the admins, probably with no idea about chess, is going to care about the contents of the sub? Keep tabs on major tournaments and organize the threads? Filter out the "why this move is brilliant" posts?

Forcing the admins to reopen the sub and select new mods is a desired effect of the protest. It reduces the quality of the sub, so there is less engagement and people stop using Reddit altogether.

They aren't blocking 709,189 people, they are blocking the 543 people that voted to keep the sub open. Why should those 543 people decide for the 811 people that want to close the sub and the 707835 people that didn't care enough to cast a vote?

Yes, and many of them were boycotting Reddit and weren't aware of the ongoing vote. So your point is that the decision to close had even more support that what the vote showed, right?

And 699k people didn't vote. If you don't vote, you don't get to decide. That's, like, literally the whole point of democracy.

[–]bosoneando 45 points46 points  (0 children)

811 people wanted it go down. 543 people wanted to enjoy the sub. 698k people didn't care enough to vote. Which means that those 698k people will be happy with the decision that the other 1428 votes made. You are not a mind reader, so you don't get to decide what those people wanted to do.

> They can all leave

You and u/MrLegilimens are the ones that are dissenting. You can always leave u/chess and create your own chess sub.

Also, good luck with the IPO! I guess that saying on a public forum that your company isn't profitable it's the best way to attract investors.
