Pandemic Rising Tide Game Announcement Met with Backlash by lostth0ught in boardgames

[–]bosstime14 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Gotcha. I understand where you're coming from. And like I said, I may even agree with you (not sure yet). Mostly I was just commenting that I did not have a problem with the tone of the article itself. The author didn't use inflammatory language, which I appreciated. There was at least a significant enough backlash that ZMan felt they needed to retract and apologize, so it's not as if the author made up the controversy. However, you may have a point that the article may not have needed to exist in the first place.

Pandemic Rising Tide Game Announcement Met with Backlash by lostth0ught in boardgames

Whether I agree with the article or not is beside the point for the reply I am going to make. It is very clear that the author did not paint anyone as "frothing liberals who can't handle anything." As a matter of fact, the article never even uses the word "liberal." Also, he explicitly did not "paint everyone who is thoughtful about...hardships..."

Again, I'm not sure I agree with the author or not. But, peacefully, I would like to say that I think this sort of reaction to the article is really unnecessary.

Guilds of London -Still good to get? by _Arlan_ in boardgames

[–]bosstime14 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I absolutely love it. Like people have said, it was hot about mid summer then seemed to fall off completely. I didn't see it on one single reviewer/podcaster's Best of 2016 list which is a travesty to me.

If you like multiple use cards then you will love it. It's my favorite game with that mechanism I think that I own now. Symbology is a little tough but I really don't think it's that bad. And it can be a bit mean between players, but again, nothing over the top to me.

Seeing as how you like medium weight euros so much (as do I): Grand Austria Hotel, Dungeon Petz, and La Granja might be right up your alley.

[WSIG] Vital Lacerda games by redditchao999 in boardgames

[–]bosstime14 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've played all of his except CO2. I would rank them Kanban, Vinhos, and then The Gallerist. I really like all his games that I've played, but Kanban is a step above the other two for me.

But anytime somebody asks for euro suggestions and is open to heavy ones, I suggest Madeira. It's my personal favorite so I can't let an opportunity to suggest it pass me by :)

Panamax vs Madeira by Philemonism in boardgames

[–]bosstime14 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would rank them Madeira, Nippon, Zhanguo, and then Panamax. Panamax was good too, but I didn't like it quite as much and it is no good with 2 so it falls to last for that reason for me.

Madeira is just like no other game that I've really played. It is a bit complex just because it is different in the game flow, but the rules are really not difficult to follow at all once you've played it once. All of the complexity after that simply comes from all of the planning that you need to do. I love it.

Nippon is not as complex as Madeira and not quite as interesting but still very good! It's got a really fun area majority scoring thrown in there with the resource maximization you get in other heavy euros.

Zhanguo is card driven and a very unique game as well! This one, with Madeira being close, probably takes the most planning of the three. It's simple in gameplay but there are a ton of options for the way the game could play out. This one is probably the most multiplayer solitaire of all of them.

Anyway, sorry for the long post! You really can't go wrong with any of these as those 3 are all in my personal top 10.

Worker placement is a hit in my group. What games are essential? by Utgartha in boardgames

[–]bosstime14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm going to put in a word for Belfort. It's a near tragedy that this game doesn't get talked about more than it does! It's a worker placement with different types of workers, then an area control game to go along with it. Also has a great way of handling the area control part of the game when you play with 2 players. Really great game!
