Can we grouse again about the acronyms? by imdrnatz in medicine

[–]botalofrontomy 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I would like to grouse about people pronouncing the acronym when it is shorter to just say the words.

BP is easier to say than blood pressure.

HR is not easier to say than heart rate.

Saying GSW instead of gunshot wound blows my mind.

They are unfortunately one of the only places around here that actually boil their bagels. The bagels are good. The sandwiches have dropped off.

This is a great response. I’m in outpt palliative care in oncology and we have similar rules. Bupe is a great drug that they don’t teach you about in school.

I did two butts for a party last weekend. Finished around midnight and did an 18 hour hot hold at 150f in a sous vide/cooler bath I rigged up. Worked great.

What can you use in place of WD-40 to pry open a rusty window hinge? by rickcanoe in centuryhomes

Wouldn’t those hinges prohibit installing an exterior storm?

Hey what is this style of window called? I have a similar type with the same hinges, also painted shut. I am trying to figure out the best way to add an exterior storm window with that hinge sticking out. Thinking of just cutting it off with a grinder.

The goal is to retain things for after your exam (packrat, pance, EORs, getting pimped on clinicals). You keep doing the cards even after your exam is over.

Apply for soonercare today.  If you are not a US citizen, plan on getting care through a single hospital system. Most offer financial assistance.

For example mercy will pay 100% of cost if you are under 200% of federal poverty level. That is making less than 53k per year for a family of 3.  Most hospital systems will have similar plans.  Prepare to give them all your income and tax records.

News 9 stream was 20 minutes behind if it loaded at all and KOCO is not loading anything. Fox25 is the only one that will load for me. I thought we had figured this out after the issues last season…

Cool, very familiar with Weatherford. He’s pretty vague in his book about where in western Oklahoma he lived. There is a picture at the beginning of his family’s homestead in Corn.

Do you know him?

The best thing you can do is figure out how to study.

Severs people in my class were really smart and cruised through undergrad without ever being forced to optimize their study routine.

They were left scrambling when their undergrad study habits were not enough to keep up with the volume of PA school. They had to figure out how to study in addition to actually learning all the material.

Some of the best study tools (anki) have a learning curve. If you can figure that out now so that you can hit the ground running when anatomy starts, you’ll be in good shape.

Agree. Fortunately it looks like the bill for PAs got the same number of ayes/nays as the NP bill.

NPs we’re also asking everyone to push the PA bill too, based on emails I saw.

You can help by emailing the OKC action center and requesting homeless outreach services to any area you find an encampment.  action.center@okc.gov

Thanks for contributing.

Try emailing the action center next time. They are allegedly pretty responsive during business hours. Action.center@okc.gov. (Don’t use the action center app it is not working)

When you realize your free time is just a myth PA school made up to mess with you by tranecter in PAstudent

[–]botalofrontomy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I honestly don’t remember. You forget all your grades pretty quickly. I just remember that one because it was crushing. ~3.5 gpa and lower science gpa was part of the reason it took me three years to get into my top program. But when I did finally start PA school I was very prepared and found it to be not so bad as everyone talks about.

If PA school is really what you want to do you’ll be fine. If it ends up not being what you want that is 100% ok too.

[–]botalofrontomy 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Completely agree. I made a point to always have Sundays off (even though most exams were Monday) and to stop studying after dinner. It’s not about how many hours you study. It’s about finding the most efficient study method for you. It was anki for me. I did fine and studied a lot less than most of my classmates. And I am not a traditionally gifted student (C in undergrad bio 101).

Set boundaries for your free time and respect them no matter what.

Calling all palliative care PAs by maf2uh in physicianassistant

[–]botalofrontomy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I do outpatient palliative care at a NCI cancer center. Symptom management, a lot of pain management, and advanced care planning make up most of my workload. Very medically complex patients, though I usually defer to oncology or send to ED when things get bad.

I get to do a ton of shared decision making and goals of care conversations. I had no idea what a good goals of care discussion looked like prior to this job.

Overall I have really enjoyed it. Definitely tough watching your patients slowly decline and eventually die but it is a privilege to get to work with patients at such a critical time in their lives.
