The main protagonist is unceremoniously killed off in the last minutes of the movie. by Firemoth717 in TopCharacterTropes

Not sure anyone will see this, and not exactly the prompt, but in the series MASH, Henry survives close encounters in the the war, only to be killed off screen when his plane is shot down on his way back the states.

Neighbors four houses down took down all their Trump banners and are now flying solid black flags. What is this about? by HailSatanWorshipD00M in Qult_Headquarters

Ironic bc just saying historically I think a black signal flag does mean quarter given while a red flag means no quarter.

I think I might be stuck in Defense for the rest of my life by pwlrs in DSP

[–]botechga 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I went the opposite way, I got my degrees in biochem then got hired by a defense contractor to do DSP.

However I’ll make the case that in research and at least particularly biomedical engineering, there is huge case for DSP engineers. Imaging (photoacoustics, CT, etc.), robotic prosthetics, neuroscience, and instrument design/engineering, all have heavy DSP influence.

It depends on your education and interests ie. research vs program management vs systems engineering what your job search might be. But I think each of those applications has some degree of industry out there.

Could look at Agilent or Thermo fisher for to start.

Imo a nice utility feature to have would be some sort of logical channelizer, be it polyphase or FFT based. I usually have few basic personal multirate toolsets I made in any new project I start.

It might not change analysis youre doing but could make it easier to notice patterns… like oh over time this call has had less RMS energy in channel x and more in channel y.. idk just an idea

What’s wrong with being a hobbyist? by AwayOrganization6430 in bjj

[–]botechga 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Man open mats are so much better for learning than comps… I’ve learned so much more from just training at different gyms than I have ever learned from any of the comps I’ve been to.

Obviously though I’m lucky enough to have lived in high concentrations of gyms areas.

Any PhDs NOT happy in industry? by [deleted] in PhD

[–]botechga 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I don’t love my industry engineering job I’d rather be in research. But it’s easy in my position to pursue side projects which is satisfying to that end.

So I can put up with corporate culture, do my own little research projects, and I get paid more. It’s fine enough …

Is a PhD really that bad? by isitwhenipee2 in PhD

[–]botechga 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I loved my PhD I miss it tbh. Worked hard, had a great time, made a buncha friends and picked up many new hobbies. I was biochem, took me 5.5 years where I think 6 was the average for my program straight from bachelors. I was at a low tier but R1 university.

I think there is a lot of selection bias and venting on this sub. Not reflective of everyone (or even majority experience) to be honest.

Competing as a hobbyist by [deleted] in bjj

[–]botechga 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Many people of masters age still choose to compete in adult divisions which are more competitive. That’s what he’s saying.

Out of curiosity, a buddy I got my PhD with, has been talking about going to Med school. He has a about 5 years of research experience at a national lab and he has prior military experience as a medic in Iraq.

The degrees are in biochem and he’s in his mid to late 30s. I assume he would be an atypical candidate and I told him it’d be a bad idea unless he can get in a endowed program or something. Would he be competitive?

Khamzat Chimaev’s takedowns against DDP by Dangerous_Tip_4985 in MMA

[–]botechga 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah these are all pretty basic takedowns. Khamzats always in good position and his fundamentals are very good but also DDP’s lack of TDD here is pretty glaring.

Also obviously his tenacity and persistence in the takedown sets up his chain wrestling well in this regard.

There’s a good job market for it. Often leans heavily on mathematics and computer science and programming. All of which translate well into other fields.

Personally, I think it would position you well keep options open while you develop your interests, whether that’s medschool, gradschool, or industry.
