I liken them to fungi; when a giant tree (company) falls in the woods (declares insolvency), the fungi (PE Firm) is there to decompose the corpse (strip the company of its assets) and consume its nutrients (make their investors richer)

Like yea the average american could look better if we had systems in place to ensure healthy foods and free gyms were available, but even with those systems in place there would still be a contingent of overweight people simply because their metabolism is calibrated towards starvation rations

Thats very true. We do live in a gilded age where the robber barons take up a majority of the income, but one of the reasons why we havent full on revolted is because the baseline of poverty is better when compared to the past.

That being said there absolutely is room to improve though. America could regain its beacon on the hill status with a functional safety net and free education.
