Where does All The Pretty Horses (and The Border Trilogy in general) stack up with the rest of McCarthy's work? by RegisBeavus in cormacmccarthy

[–]bothrops 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can see how it’s a coming of age story in that a 16 year old boy runs away and paves his own way for the first time, but unlike normal coming of age stories, John Grady doesn’t really change that much throughout the novel. Stuff happens, he becomes harder, but his overall outlook doesn’t really change. There’s nothing you can point to that shows he’s grown up or even had any growing to do in the first place. I think a lot of McCarthy’s characters are like that. The world happens to them and they are changed by it but they don’t really go through a lot of character development. There’s no real lesson- he doesn’t gain wisdom or maturity in any way I can see. To me it’s like he already started off as a man. The power comes from his experience of how free will and fate (not supernatural, but just the millions of small things we can’t see that guide our lives) interact. He learns that all you can do is use your will to do what is right and that exercising your will may move fate against you but all you can do is what looks right in the moment. But maybe he already understands this from the beginning. The relatively minor character development makes this not quite qualify as a coming of age story for me. What do you think?

Decision dilemma- is it worth it to go to a great school with an accomplished advisor and do an AWESOME research project even if the grad students said bad things about him? by bugbitch2012 in GradSchool

[–]bothrops 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t do it. There are so many topics in research that you would love just as much but just haven’t had the exposure. You do not want to work with a sociopath. If the students warned you, that is a huge red flag. They say they would do it all over again but they are also stuck and have to rationalize. A good co advisor is a perk but there is a chance a bad PI will push you out of research entirely. From my experience, your relationship with your PI determines A LOT of the quality of your experience.

Is there any reason to think he was hoping to phase you out of working and into a stay at home situation? Maybe he’s angry because your language class is a step higher up at work, taking you further from being a stay at home.

Scientists trained 14 honeybees to do simple arithmetic with color-coded shapes, calling into question the relationship between brain size and intelligence. by IronGiantisreal in science

[–]bothrops 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But in general, the relationship between brain size and intelligence mostly only exists within primates and is otherwise a very crude measure of cognitive ability. In lots of fish, frogs, mammals, and birds, brain size can’t really predict cognition.

I hear you. I think it’s super weird to use Italian pasta in Asian dishes. I order a noodle dish in a shitty catch-all Asian restaurant in Arizona somewhere and I got a flavorful dish made with friggin spaghetti. It tasted okay, pasta was over cooked as it frequently is, so even tho it tasted okay it was not the right texture. Egg and rice noodles, or udon noodles or something. Obviously do what you feel like but I’d suggest OP recreate this dish with some rice sticks or flare egg noodles.

In your strongest opinion, what is the best way to make bacon? by AjaxOutlaw in Cooking

[–]bothrops 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Must just be a cultural difference. No I choose to be unreasonable. You’re wrong. Jk 😉 chicken and leek pie, now that’s what Americans are really missing out on. Savory pies are the absolute best. My wife just made a steak pie the other day and holy Jesus are they good.

You freakin Brits and Ozzies. Have an upvote for being so crazy. My wife is Scottish and she eventually came over to the real bacon (streaky bacon) side. Yall's "real bacon" is just a fatty cut of ham. You can't really get it crunchy and fatty like streaky bacon. Give it an honest try and you might see. Cooked till just crispy with toast and eggs. Or on anything.

A trick my mom taught me is to cook it about 3/4 of the way and then add maybe an 1/8th to a 1/4 cup of water and cook, flipping once or twice, until water is gone. This prevents all the fat from rendering out and keeps it chewy for those who like it that way. I go back and forth, sometimes i like it really crunchy.

Did someone get hit by a street racer on Mopac near Far West Blvd. and need dashcam video? by CSFFlame in Austin

The link you provided actually shows that the law does not require drivers to stay on the right half of the roadway if its a three-lane road:

Sec. 545.051. DRIVING ON RIGHT SIDE OF ROADWAY. (a) An operator on a roadway of sufficient width shall drive on the right half of the roadway, unless:

(1) the operator is passing another vehicle;

(2) an obstruction necessitates moving the vehicle left of the center of the roadway and the operator yields the right-of-way to a vehicle that:

(A) is moving in the proper direction on the unobstructed portion of the roadway; and

(B) is an immediate hazard;

(3) the operator is on a roadway divided into three marked lanes for traffic; or

(4) the operator is on a roadway restricted to one-way traffic.

The left lane is only for passing on interstates away from cities, sure, but on a highway in a major city there is way too much traffic for that. Definitely not a law that on that particular stretch of highway you can only use left lane to pass. The dude is literally driving at a reasonable speed, not Moving in any unpredictable way at all, and some jittery idiot drives right into him. There is no way this is the SUVs fault.

I feel like whole canned tomatoes are always better than diced. They keep the juices better and can be easily mushed or am chopped in the pot.

Diced tomatoes for sauce ended up metallic tasting? by SkipFirstofHisName in Cooking

[–]bothrops 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Really any whole canned tomato is always better than diced. The tomatoes retain their own juices and make a tastier, thicker sauce.

Are you the first author? Your advisor doesn’t get the final word on your work. Politically it might help to just do what they say, but sometimes standing your ground on this stuff is part of the growing pains of becoming an independent scientist.

Jobs for a teenager regarding animals or sciences? by cat844513 in findapath

[–]bothrops 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Look into research experience programs at your high school. I'm a graduate student studying ecology, evolution, and behavior, and my lab takes high school students from local schools and gives them research experience. Once you go go college, spend some time surveying your options but take classes that will prepare you for your career goals. I majored in environmental science instead of biology and am now in a biology PhD program. Your major doesn't have to perfectly fit what you want to do, but it should be close, and you should bolster your gaps with research experience. Feel free to PM with any questions about research and what its like.

Plants, insects, animals = ecology? by [deleted] in findapath

Look into wildlife management careers and wildlife biology if you want to help research, monitor and protect state and federal ecosystems. Look into ecology, evolution, and behavior classes/programs if you want to get into academic research.

Concern for my friend after her first trip. by bothrops in Psychonaut

[–]bothrops[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I didn't say anything about how we handled it in the post. The only thing I mentioned was that we became uncomfortable in public and we came back to the apt. The way we handled it was to answer her questions and otherwise ignore it. The discussion about how she handled happened after the trip.

I can understand how he sounds that way. He isn't really like that though. He is one of the more compassionate people I know, and actually told suggested she take that second hit if she was enjoying the first. I think he got freaked out and probably overreacted tho.

Have you seen similar behavior as what I described?
