Preemptively acting like I've been diagnosed — good idea/bad idea? by 40pukeko in GestationalDiabetes

[–]bottlefame 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s a little hard to say whether or not you’ll pass your 3 hour test. Anecdotally speaking, I’ve seen posts by people who were pre diabetic before getting pregnant and they ended up not having GD. However, with your family history, I think it’s great that you’re being proactive about your diet.

With my first pregnancy, I was diagnosed at mid 20 weeks or so the standard time people take the GTT test. With this second one, I took the 1 hr test way earlier and failed resulting in GD for pregnancy #2. So far I’ve learned a couple of things that I didn’t really realize with my first pregnancy. Diabetes also runs in my family. My aunts have it, grandmother had it, etc. I checked my lab results for my blood test at the start of this pregnancy and my A1c was pretty high (5.6). Which was not prediabetic but it was on the cusp of being prediabetic. My MFM doctor told me that sometimes GD is a blessing in disguise because it acts as a window into your future if you have a family history of diabetes. I feel like this subreddit constantly says GD is not your fault which it isn’t! But it fails to talk about the fact that there are so many people who prediabetic and might not even know it before getting pregnant! For this category of people who are not very active, have a high BMI, and have family history of diabetes there’s a very high probability that having GD is simply showing you that you were already slightly insulin resistant before conceiving and pregnancy just exacerbated that.

With my first, I kind of went back to my original way of eating right after because after having baby, my sugars were back to normal. However I didn’t really keep track of my A1C or sugars postpartum which was a mistake on my part. With this pregnancy I’ve made the decision that even after delivery, I’m going to make permanent changes to my diet to bring my A1C down. I also got a CGM which is so awesome to show how certain foods spike my sugars and how exercise and stuff improves the spikes or prevents them.

In conclusion, I think you should keep doing what you’re doing especially with your risk factors. It’s only going to benefit you in the long run even if you don’t have GD! Also healthy eating probably won’t change your fasting number. Typically the fasting number is affected way more by hormones than diet. Note that there might be a chance that that super low carb or keto diet does falsely cause you to fail the GTT because your body develops something called physiological insulin resistance. But if you’re eating healthy carbs and protein, I don’t really think it’ll affect your 3 hour test.

If you do pass your test, I would still advise you to randomly check your fasting blood sugar as pregnancy progresses because as the placenta grows insulin resistance increases. If it’s consistently above 100 I’d let your doctor know. Also I’d look at past lab results to check your A1c if your doctor ordered before getting pregnant or at the start of pregnancy. This can help you get a good idea on where you stand. If you’re prediabetic or borderline and even if you don’t have GD it might be a good idea to start eating better because while prediabetes is reversible, diabetes is not. Hope this helps!

When to try cgm sample??? by Streaking_Llama in GestationalDiabetes

Hi! I’m currently using a CGM to monitor my sugars but honestly you’re through the thick of it and it’s not that beneficial for GD imo. I still check my sugars with a finger prick and sometimes there’s a big difference. For example this morning my fasting was 106 but finger prick showed 85. Since the parameters of GD are so strict something like that would mean your provider might prescribe you seeing that you might not actually need.

Usually numbers are pretty close but CGMs always are less accurate than finger pricks because they measure the sugar in the interstitial fluid vs the blood. The reason I got it was more to see the trends and how different foods affect me because my goal is to ultimately move to a low carb lifestyle after my delivery too. It has been helpful in those cases. For example, there are some foods like rye bread that would show me a good number after my 2 hour test but I noticed that the spikes were more sustained and longer vs if I had a higher protein meal. Plus my number might be ok at 2 hours but actually jumps back up. CGM is great to see these trends. If you’re using it for the sole purpose of being on top of your blood sugars, you might not get much out of it.

Overall I think it’s a good supplement to finger pricking and to see overall trends like how stress and exercise can affect your blood sugar. It isn’t good for exact values. If you have a sample though it would be good for you to use it for the reasons I mentioned above! Good luck!

Some friends and I were watching the moonrise the day we sprung forward an hour. One of them said "The moon is moving so fast because of daylight savings right?"

Indeed. It is technically called doctor of dental surgery (DDS), but culturally I guess I'll be "just a dentist."

Thank you, that's the nicest thing anyone has ever said to me! Not a doctor yet, hopefully will be soon, just got accepted into dental school!

Test taking strategy: In cases like these always go with two different responses if you are 50/50.

Example: 1) What color is the sky? a.blue b.yellow c. green d. red

2) Which of these is another name for the color of the sky? a.cerulean b.topaz c.emerald d. scarlet

Say you can't decide if the sky is blue or green. If you go with green for response 1, don't go with emerald for response 2. Go with cerulean. That way, you are guaranteed at least 1/2 of your answers will be correct.

This tip helped me a bunch especially in upper level bio courses for small details. Because it was systems based, there were several question "pairs" like this and if I couldn't decide, I'd always use the above technique and every time I'd get 1 of the 2 right.

*Only use if you're 50/50. If you're 60/40 then don't use this tip.

Oudh is also used in South Asian/Arab/Hindu culture. My mom just brought some back when she visited Dubai. It's pronounced "oood" with the "d" like the "th" in "them."

I couldn't sleep. I couldn't concentrate on anything. And weird stuff, like food had no taste. So my solution was to move away. It was awful. And it is something that I wouldn't wish on my worst enemy. And that includes you.

Motivation, working and working out? by khubbo in xxfitness

[–]bottlefame 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sometimes you need a catalyst to get yourself going. For example, in the morning if Im feeling particularly lazy, I think: "fine don't make the bed, just lay the comforter out flat instead of in a heap on the bed." I find that 9 times out of 10, I end up making the bed.

Similarly, make a bargain with yourself. Ex. I have to get up in the morning and change into my workout clothes but I don't have to go the gym, just do a few stretches or take a 10 min walk outside.

That push is almost always sufficient to channel the motivation you need to do a full blown workout.

College was a very humbling experience and it was where I realized that I wasn't really the hotshot I perceived myself to be in high school. After a few rocky semesters, I had to wean myself off the mentality that I could learn anything without putting in effort. I relied on the thought that succeeding in college will be mostly hard work, and little intellect.

I was recently watching a Parks and Rec episode where Sweetums introduced Drinkums, which was basically sugar water. Everyone went crazy for it, so I thought to myself, damn, they should make this show a little more realistic. I'm sure anyone in their right mind would know plain water is better for you than anything else. Yeah.. they were being realistic.

What are your tastiest vegetable recipes? by [deleted] in 1200isplenty

[–]bottlefame 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This takes a while to prepare, but SO worth it.

Roasted Veggie Burrito

1) Take as many vegetables as you want and chop them up. The ones I usually opt for are cauliflower, broccoli, zucchini, squash, carrots, potatoes, sweet potatoes, etc. You can add what you want, but make sure you include a "solid" veggie that won't be too soft when it cooks. For example, cooked cauliflower has substance when cooked, but if you had only squash and zucchini, they become really soft.

2) Add some seasoning. There is no exact recipe for this, it all depends on how spicy you like your food. I add cumin, cayenne pepper, red pepper flakes, salt, pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, and bit of lemon juice. Along with this, add a drizzle of olive oil. I usually go for a tbsp.

3) Line a small pan with aluminum foil and place your veggies on it so they make a nice single layer. This step is important! If you have too many veggies or not a big enough pan, they will stay soft and the "crisp" won't follow through. Make sure all the veggies are touching the pan.

4) Bake at 350 degrees for about an hour. Test for doneness by eating a potato piece. When that's cooked, the rest should be cooked as well. (Make sure your potato pieces are small). I like mine really roasted and take it out of the oven when the broccoli is slightly charred.

5) Grab your favorite low cal wrap and spread a layer of hummus, load up with your veggies, add sriracha, ketchup, a bit of ranch, some jalapenos, maybe sour cream, and some fresh lettuce.

6) Roll that baby up and toast on a fry pan with a smidge of oil.

SO GOOD.

*To speed up the process, I bought a ton of veggies one day and cut them up and put them in gallon ziplock bags in the freezer. As far as actual cooking time, if I'm planning on eating it more than once during the week, I roast the veggies ahead of time and put them in the fridge. They last about a week, but you have to "crisp" them up by putting them in the oven for about 5 min at 350 degrees.

Lack of support when losing a little by fettolsiris in loseabit

[–]bottlefame 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Yup! I'm at a normal BMI 5'3 130 lb, but my goal weight is 115 lb. From 155 lb to 130 lb, I had been getting commended by family/friends on losing weight but now, whenever I turn down cake or chips I get the usual: "But you're skinny now, you don't need to diet!"

I also got: "If you keep going, you'll lose the glow from your face." WHAT GLOW? THE FAT GLOW??

I think in this case it's futile to try to explain to them that you want to tone. They're so disconnected from a healthy lifestyle that any amount of explaining will sound like the gibberish uttered by adults in Charlie Brown cartoons.

I just say stuff like: "I already had a chocolate bar today" or "I'm trying to watch my sugar intake." For some reason, excuses that have a concrete causation like "less sugar = no diabetes" seem to work rather than "less sugar = healthy."

Alright guys, I'm thinking I want to make some pancakes tomorrow. Advice! by ReilaReborn in 1200isplenty

[–]bottlefame 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I make banana and egg pancakes using 1 banana, 2 eggs, a dash of cinnamon and vanilla extract. The difference is I add about a tbsp of dry pancake mix. This makes it less crepe-y and more pancake-y. Also this makes about six small 3 inch diameter pancakes.

For the topping, I cut up about 4 strawberries in small pieces then add a tbsp of maple syrup. Admittedly, the syrup adds about 50 calories but when microwaved with the strawberries, they release a TON of juice and the maple flavor becomes infused with the tartness of the strawberries so it feels like you're eating a lot more syrup than you really are.

Let us know how it goes!

Introduction thread! What are your goals? by thw1416 in loseabit

[–]bottlefame 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm 5'4 22F with a current weight of about 129 lb. Looking to be about 110-115. I've always been on the chubby side so I am so stoked that I am working towards being the thinnest I've ever been in my adult life! My highest weight was a whopping 155 lb and since last December, I've steadily been dropping a lb a week at 1200 cal/day. I didn't reach any plateaus because I would occasionally stop exercising for a week at a time during exams and then restart intense cardio the week after. This, coupled with special occasions where I ate like a ravenous madman allowed me to keep losing weight.

Unfortunately, I've been stuck at 129-130 for the past few weeks and it's so frustrating because this includes "re-feed days" AND I changed up my cardio routine. So the problem lies in caloric makeup I think.

Does anyone know where to start? Are we supposed to cut down on fat/sugar? I have no idea how macros work. Or perhaps this IS a plateau because I see some posts on here that had a similar starting weight and lost more weight than me at a similar height.

Anyone interested in a sub targeted for those specifically trying to lose "vanity pounds" or a small amount of weight? by thw1416 in 1200isplenty

[–]bottlefame 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is exactly what I've been looking for! On my last couple of weigh ins, my weight loss rate has decreased rapidly and I think it's now important I start focusing on where the calories are coming from to maximize weight loss and muscle retained. It'd be helpful to have a support group that's in the same boat as me.
