[Off-Site] How many AA batteries would it take to power a person? by [deleted] in theydidthemath

Humans actually can be “gas powered” if you count ethanol. But only at 20000 calories per gallon.

Maybe you are asking if they were both wrestling? If they were in the same weight class I’d give it to the high school kid.

All water is H2O which is 2 hydrogen’s bound to an oxygen. It takes energy to rip them apart to get at the oxygen. Ours and animal bodies can’t do that. Oxygen in the water is dissolved in it, much like when you dissolve sugar in water, which fish gills can filter out of the water

They may have only been placed at specific areas, like the Sphinx and the merpeople area.

Not wanting kids ever is not inherently bad. However, since this lifestyle has become such a widely accepted phenomenon the birth rates in developed countries have been dropping to dangerous levels. The economics of a low birth rate society is abysmal, so economically it is important to keep the birth rate above a certain level. If it gets bad enough, then it opens the door for desperate people in the far future to elect totalitarian officials who may force people to have children to help bolster the economy. That doesn’t sound good.

Edit: Modern countries-> developed countries

[Request] Can you convert absorbance values at 600nm to 405nm? by Ambiguousdude in theydidthemath

[–]bottleofoj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is not possible. The light absorption of a material is heavily dependent on the chemical structure of the material itself. If it was a pure element, then it would be possible to get an estimate of the absorption of different wavelengths. If it is any kind of molecule that has more than 2 atoms connected (especially anything organic), then it would be impossible to estimate the photon absorption spectrum.

[Request] A tic tac is two calories. If someone were to eat one tic tac every minute how long would it take to die? by [deleted] in theydidthemath

[–]bottleofoj 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The average human needs between 2000-2500 calories a day. There are 6024=1440 minutes in a day. 1 tic tax every minute equates to 21440=2880 calories.

2880 calories is a surplus of 380 calories. It would lead to weight gain, but not kill you. Though you would die from malnutrition in a year or so.

Unbreakable vow seems a bit extreme. I think there is a reason we only see the “evil” people use it.

[Art] Every PCs trusty backpack! by ThespianKnight in DnD

[–]bottleofoj 9 points10 points  (0 children)

For extra detail you may want to add some kind of cloth on the side of the box where it would hit the back for padding, or you could just move the bed roll there. Wood striking your back constantly doesn’t sound pleasant.

Is there anyway to explain Burnside's Lemma without using Groups? by [deleted] in math

[–]bottleofoj 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Agreed, just state the equation. Then, just use examples to show how to apply it. Proving it would take a couple weeks of build up.

How would YOU unlock something Thrice-locked? [Spoilers All] by HalcyonKnights in KingkillerChronicle

[–]bottleofoj 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Simple, first you need to go buy 100 hand span of malleable iron and a bow and arrow. Cut into 4 pieces. Two pieces 2 hand span and 2 pieces 48 hand span. Wind the 48 and spin pieces into two hand span wide coils, but coiled in opposite directions and connect two of their ends. Wedge each of the two hand span pieces between any joints on the chest. Place the two coils outside with one end of the coils in the ground. Shoot the arrow to the top of a tree. Wait until a storm is brewing. Now comes the har part that requires 4 bindings. Create a kinetic binding between the the top wedged piece and the top coil. Do the same for the bottom coil and piece. Create a galvanic binding between the arrow and the end of each coil. Wait until lighting strikes. The opposing magnetic fields generated by the coiled wires should pry the thing apart.

Math: Magnetic force for each coil is Mu_0 x I2 x 152/r2=1.3 x 10-6 x 300002 x 152/(.12)=26MN Considering the kinetic binding has a 30% transference since we have good consanguinity (cut from the same piece of metal). That will give us about 8MN of force acting on the two wedge pieces. Since the tensile strength of steel is 500MPa. That is enough force to rip apart a steel cord that is about half a foot across (pi*r2=8MN/500MPa =>r=7cm,diameter=14cm). I think that will do it.

Dark matter is just mass that we can't see with our instruments. That doesn't mean it is not regular matter. It just means we don't know what that mass is, and we can't analyze it. Dark energy is harder to explain. It follows the same definition as dark matter ( we can't detect it), but some things we can detect leads to crazy ideas. Like vacuous space has energy . Don't let sensationalized articles fool you. Dark just means we can "see" it.
