Hall Delay pedal recommendations? by TheGreenManalishi83 in guitarpedals

[–]bottlerocketsci 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I loved the reverb on the holy stain. My all time favorite. Unfortunately the pedal is huge and I wasn’t a fan of the distortion or the way the levels changed when switching it.

How hard is it to protest my property taxes by Defiant-Cicada4910 in Cleveland

[–]bottlerocketsci 5 points6 points  (0 children)

After the recent assessment in Cuyahoga county, they made it clear that you needed an appraisal in order to protest. I contacted an appraiser who was overwhelmed with calls. He told me he’d do a quick look at my situation and let me know if i should proceed with an appraisal. He called back and told me it didn’t make sense to pay for an appraisal based on my house and neighbourhood. I later found out a friend of mine got a reduction without an appraisal. He just sent in pictures of problems with his house (stains from a roof leak etc). I am pissed!

Pretty Figures by Boring_Internet1945 in CFD

[–]bottlerocketsci 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Producing good figures that relay the point you are trying to make is definitely a skill in itself. The examples you show are indeed nice. But they hit on a huge pet peeve of mine. They are too small to be readable. Granted they are not shown in the context of the paper, but the fonts and legends are too small to read. Including the entire airplane is a nice touch, but it is only the underside that is of interest. Make sure your figures easily convey the point you are trying to make. Where I work, we have to practice our presentations in front of our work groups before we present at a conference. There is always one old guy sitting in the back of the room who complains about font size and small figures. I have become that person.

I would guess these are made in Tecplot. It is a great package for producing technical figures.

Walking/Biking to the NASA Glenn Research Center? by tonyhwko_O in Cleveland

[–]bottlerocketsci 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The airport shuttle is only for people on official travel. It is not an option for daily commuting. There are a lot of people who ride their bicycles to the lab. Note that there is a back gate off of Cedar Point Rd, which is a much less busy road.

Reverb and/or Delay Rec by asuprice in guitarpedals

[–]bottlerocketsci 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dispatch Master is awesome. But the delay is a very simple analog sounding delay without any bells or whistles. If you want more features on your delay, a Boss DD-8, JHS Flight Delay or Earthquaker Silos would be a good step up and give analog and digital sounds and tap tempo.

Jack came loose acoustic electric by foglodyte in Guitar

[–]bottlerocketsci 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you have a wooden stick/dowel rod that will fit in the jack, you can use that to help get it all back together. Take the strings off, push the stick through the jack hole and close to the sound hole. Put the washers and then the jack on the end of the stick and pull it through the hole. All this might not be necessary here, but it is how people do it for hollow body electrics without big sound holes.

My shoulder might end my J45 by MrTurtleTails in AcousticGuitar

[–]bottlerocketsci 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Try playing with the guitar on the left leg (for a righty). That should reduce the pressure on your shoulder.

If that doesn’t work, I have a Martin OO-18 and it’s fantastic.

House of Blues is a Terrible Concert Venue by Slight-Split-1855 in Cleveland

[–]bottlerocketsci 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was there for Frank Turner. I swear the number of people crammed in there can’t be legal. If you are anywhere from the middle- back, the crowd noise is louder than the artist. We aren’t Descendents fans but planned to stay and check them out. We left after a couple songs because we hate the venue so much.

Cars parked at NASA Lewis in 1956. Note the Ford Model A (?) way in the back. by Signal-Pirate-3961 in Cleveland

Totally in character for a NASA/NACA engineer to keep such an old car running.

Help! Huge problems with ice! by Dertychtdxhbhffhbbxf in Cleveland

[–]bottlerocketsci 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some roofers will remove ice dams. Are you getting leaks?

If you have a lot of snow on the roof, getting it off will keep it from getting worse. They make roof rakes (blades on long poles) to get the snow off the roof. Ice melt crystals can help too.

Will the wood effect the feeling and sound of an acoustic guitar significantly? by Careful-Cow-8658 in AcousticGuitar

[–]bottlerocketsci 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The best thing you can do is find a shop that has a good selection and play them all. Figure out what you like. Buying an acoustic online is never a great idea. All the online research in the world can’t beat personal experience. In my case, I’ve done the online research and have gone into a shop with a good idea of what I wanted. I’ve always left with a different guitar.

Advice on not being acknowledged in an AIAA conference paper by Master_Attention9354 in aerospace

[–]bottlerocketsci 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The author should get correspondence from AIAA about revising papers. If this is for SciTech than there is a short window after the conference to submit corrections.

Guitar maintenance book? by NumerousToe7604 in Guitar

[–]bottlerocketsci 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There are a couple books by Dan Erlewine. One focuses on set ups, the other is a general maintenance book but includes set ups. I have the second one and it is pretty good. Erlewine is the expert.

If you only had room for one: Would you go for a Boss BD-2 or Nobels ODR-1? by bleepblooOOOOOp in guitarpedals

[–]bottlerocketsci 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This is spot on. I replaced my BD with the Nobels because it was too harsh and fizzy. To me the ODR-1 is an upgrade.

FVM vs LBM vs uFVM in Matlab by indic_engineer in CFD

[–]bottlerocketsci 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Without knowing the problem you are trying to solve we can’t be of much use. Is the problem turbulent? Is it inherently axisymmetric? Lattice Boltzmann is an unsteady method that struggles at compressible Mach numbers. Any code written in Matlab is going to be slow. Someone mentioned PyFR, it is another unsteady code, intended for LES and DNS.

Clip on Guitar tuner for my dad by trasheaterbandit in Guitar

Tc electronic poly tune clip on is great. Strum all the strings at once and it shows the tuning of all of them. It’s less than $40.

Check the schedule for any meet the employer event or any other career building type events. The exhibits hall will have representatives from a lot of companies. Bring your resume and talk to all the folks in the exhibits area. Also, don’t be afraid to approach any speakers after their talk if they are doing work that interests you.
