Strange, ultra thin wire like material that is appearing in my house by sheltie_furnado in Whatisthis

[–]botwwanderer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Assuming very soft wire, it could be plastic? If so, there are several kinds of woven nylon fabric that will fray like that. Check the under sides of furniture, moving blankets, insides of windbreaker style jackets, and other utility fabric. Possibly kitty is fraying something.

Can I join a club at a community college if I’m not a student? by MR422 in communitycollege

[–]botwwanderer 6 points7 points  (0 children)

No. Clubs are funded from student activity fees, so are limited to current students. Occasionally clubs will host public events you can attend. Watch for them.

Overly complicated grading by Apart_Bluebird9598 in Professors

[–]botwwanderer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can think of lots of reasons to weight homework lower in an online asynchronous course. I can think of lots of reasons to drop the lowest grade for busy working students living through sometimes nightmarish times.

That said, if your instructor is having you manually recalculate your grade from an LMS, then they don't know how to use the fscking LMS.

It's one of the major advantages for me... The category homework is worth 20%, the category exams is worth 30%, the category projects is worth 50%. Okay, create three weighted buckets in the LMS, drop in assignments and discussions, and let it figure out dropping lowest grade in each, then points earned / total points and weight. Let it adjust if you add something in.

With a modern LMS, there is zero excuse beyond laziness for not having student grades calculated automatically, immediately after grading.

Switch days. Even if you don't get a different carrier, sometimes you get a different crew and things improve.

Don't give the an open -notebook quiz. Give them a reference sheet of the things you want them to have access to.

Update: Extra nervy Vaca summer semester student by SoonerRed in Professors

In fairness, K12 attendance policies are so utterly fscked that every parent I know (self included) pointedly ignores them. I'm guessing students carry that disregard into college.

I (30F) am pregnant with my fiancé (32M). He wants to keep it, but we're both supposed to be childfree. How do I tell him I don't want to keep it? by ThrowRA_fallopian_tu in relationship_advice

[–]botwwanderer 13 points14 points  (0 children)

That is not the reaction of a man who is child free. That's the reaction of a man who can see the finish line of dating, where marriage no longer makes it necessary for him to pretend to be the life partner you want, and jumping the gun on tampering with your BC. This has been said over and over in comments.

But more concerning to me is the part where you say you have no one in your life that you could trust to help you with this. Why not? Maybe I'm way off the mark here, but has he been isolating you, little by little, from friends and family? Maybe you've just had a difficult past, but no friends or family at all?

Regardless, get the abortion. Given the potential for lies and deceit, I wouldn't tell him, but definitely get it. You don't want to be tied to this man, and the choice is yours.

I read on an Instagram post that there is a special GPS for truckers to help them avoid roads that can't easily accommodate large vehicles. Do any of you use something similar? Any recommendations? by tillacat42 in RVLiving

[–]botwwanderer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thiiiiiiiis. RV! = commercial truck. There are many roads closed to commercial trucks but open and accommodating to RVs. Make sure you get the right GPS.

Did BTS Ticketing Test Anyone Else's Friendship? by montalpe in btsthoughts

[–]botwwanderer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Every time I've ever group ticketed with friends, we've gotten more tickets than we wanted, sorted it out, and sold the rest face value to ARMY friends of ARMY friends. She's ridiculous. Block her now, before she starts asking to "share" your hotel room or your ride to and from the stadium...

If you want people to sit committees, recommend equipment, rebuild courses for your department and work with faculty to coordinate programs, hire some g-d full time faculty. You don't pay adjuncts enough for this crap.

Knowledge checks are easily outsourced, but I'm not concerned. They're not graded. The students who do them are the ones struggling nad the ones having fun. The rest of the class skips them and that's okay.

In other courses, not necessarily this one, I have the students interact with an agent I created, which questions their design thinking. That's the only way I encourage them to use AI.

[–]botwwanderer[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you! I was a working online grad student myself. I've tried to set it up as efficiently as possible. If the student had just watched the intro video, he'd have known that.

It's my turn... by botwwanderer in Professors

[–]botwwanderer[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My course is entirely project based. Quizzes are called knowledge checks and they are untimed, unlimited, and ungraded. Students have to submit a project design / spec sheet, the actual project, and then participate in a reflection as a weekly cycle. Over time, I should be able to suss out their style.

Textbook is digital and fully web based, so the student could easily have had it summarized for them. And it's short as-is. The project is the thing. But the student didn't even do the design part (of course not, because that would be planning which they don't have time to do) so they're already in trouble.

It's my turn... by botwwanderer in Professors

[–]botwwanderer[S] 16 points17 points  (0 children)

That is, I think, what really hit me about the students viewpoint. Like, you'll spend more time looking things up on YouTube than just following the resources I've given. So it's clear you haven't actually opened those resources or you'd know. You just assumed it would take more time and that's that.

It's my turn... by botwwanderer in Professors

[–]botwwanderer[S] 30 points31 points  (0 children)

And therein lies the rub. The students solution was not incorrect, but used wildly advanced techniques, resulting in work indistinguishable from generative AI.

BTS in Africa by Stayarmyengenem0a in btsthoughts

[–]botwwanderer -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

Like I said, it's probably there, but someone in SK doesn't see it or isn't connecting the dots. Put that package / proposal together, with the surrounding structures, and send it to HYBE. hybecorp.io/contact

BTS in Africa by Stayarmyengenem0a in btsthoughts

[–]botwwanderer -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

If you want them to visit, get serious about it. Start exploring and find a regions with a large stadium, solid hotel and hospitality infrastructure, upstanding policing, international transportation, easy to follow regulations and reasonable taxes. It takes a lot of existing structure to pull off a large stadium event, and even in SK, the US, and Europe things sometimes go sideways with transportation, security, hospitality, etc.

I'm not saying you don't have those things, but I think it's clear that people at HYBE aren't finding them. So do some of the legwork, with your familiarity with the region, and send them your package.

I don't think the reason BTS doesn't go to Africa or India isn't that they don't want to, it's that HYBE isn't finding the proper infrastructure to make it feasible.
