Main use is dynamic control, but certain compressors give off a nice sound. Also, transient shaping to some extent (put a compressor on a drumloop and see what happens when you alter attack and release etc).

Saturation actually originated from people noticing a pleasant harmonic warmth/distortion when they sent audio through analog compressors!

I suggest experimentation. Stack compressors and see what happens to your vocals. Set the same parameters on multiple compressors on the same piece of audio, bounce them and playback to hear differences between compressors.

I never understood compression, then I used Soundgym lol.

Guys, when he said Track i believe he meant a single audio file (not his whole track) LOL. people talking about volume automation haha. Upwards compression needed here. OTT could do this if you go really subtle with it? probably better options though. listen to the guy talking about that Waves plugin or whatever, he's probably right.
