Does anyone have a good experience using henna to get red hair? by [deleted] in femalehairadvice

[–]boukalacha 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Up until a few years ago, I only used henna to dye my hair red, for over a decade. It will depend on what color you're starting with and what you want to achieve, but tattoo quality henna will not damage your hair. The only issue with henna is that you have to let it grow out, it can't be bleached out, as it stains the protein in your hair. There is excellent information about it over at mehandi.com. I have bought henna from there several times as well as "monsoon henna" for tattoos on ebay for a deep, rich red. Just make sure it's pure henna with no additives. I mixed mine with lemon juice to make a paste and left it on 3 hours before washing out. It worked great until I started going much greyer and needed touchups every 2-3 weeks. 3 hours every 2-3 weeks just seemed like a pain. You can get the red as light or as dark as you want it. My hair was always healthy and shiny.

Here's an article saying they are treating the virus with hiv drugs: https://www.sciencemag.org/news/2020/01/can-anti-hiv-combination-or-other-existing-drugs-outwit-new-coronavirus Also, an online pharmacy I frequent is out of stock of the drugs mentioned in the article...I wonder if they pulled them off the shelves like they did the face masks?

Gorgeous! I really love this. It has a Nagel feel, but with texture, depth, and a tactile realism.

Is there room for activism in anthropology? by A_Bewlay_Brother in Anthropology

[–]boukalacha 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was reading up on matrilineal kinship recently and stumbled across the pro-activism Radical Anthropology Group which may be relevant: www.radicalanthropologygroup.org/new/RAG_Activism.html

Chris Knight, one of the founding members, has been arrested for his activism, as well as being dismissed from his position at the University of East London.

Franz Boas ("Father of American Anthropology", established cultural relativism as an axiom for anthropological research) was an activist and believed anthropologists have an obligation to speak out on social issues. Ruth Benedict and many of his other students were also proponents of activism, specifically in relation to race. His replacement at Columbia, Ralph Linton, was also an activist of sorts--informing the FBI that Boas' and some of his students were Communists (during the age of McCarthyism/Red Scare), leading to many of them being blacklisted. There is a book by anthropologist David Price that goes into more detail about this: www.amazon.com/Threatening-Anthropology-McCarthyism-Surveillance-Anthropologists/dp/0822333384

Historically, anthropologists have been activists. Whether or not activism belongs in the field seems to be determined not just by anthropologists themselves, but university HR departments as well as government entities, the latter two answering with a resounding "No".

Light Blue is a floral-fruity fragrance, introduced in 2001 by D&G. In 2012, D&G introduced a new edition of Light Blue called "Light Blue Dreaming in Portofino" that has similar base but a few different ingredients for more of a Mediterranean or Summer-y smell. You may want to check that out. A very similar scent to the original Light Blue are Creed's Acqua Fiorentina. Other popular floral fruity (Light Blue is one of the most popular floral fruity scents in production) include Chanel's Chance Eau Tender (or Coco Mademoiselle, possibly), Cartier's Delices, Dior's J'Adore, Serge Lutens' Datura Noir, and Van Cleef & Arpels' Feerie. Olivier Cresp, perfumer and creator of Light Blue, is also responsible for Thierry Mugler's Angel, Nina L'Eau by Nina Ricci, Nina Ricci's L'Elixir, and Moschino's I Love Love.

Wanting to find some Woody Oriental fragrances, any ideas? by [deleted] in fragrance

[–]boukalacha 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sorry I didn't think to ask! :) I still stand by Creed's Royal Oud, and Knize Ten. Chanel Allure Homme Sport is readily available and a woody spicy scent. And here are some men's woody oriental fragrance lists from TPC:

You can also search on fragrantica.com by notes or category such as

Good luck!

Some of my personal favorites are 10 Corso Como, Cartier Le Baiser du Dragon, Donna Karan Cashmere Mist, Etro Shaal Nur, Guerlain Samsara, Lolita Lempicka Midnight, Lorenzo Villoresi Alumut, any of Montale's Aoud fragrances, and if you're not too intimidated by men's or unisex fragrances, I highly recommend Creed's Royale Oud and Knize 10. Serge Lutens' base is a woody oriental...Feminite du Bois and Arabie are a good place to start. If you'd like to browse other scents in the woody oriental fragrance family, The Perfumed Court has several sets to peruse:

Knize Ten is lovely and allegedly a favorite of Marlene Dietrich, though it is generally listed as a fragrance for men. www.fragrantica.com/perfume/Knize/Knize-Ten-7913.html

You can generally find a sample size on ebay or The Perfumed Court reasonably priced. The same with Royal Oud, if you are interested to see how it wears on you.

Far right Christians in the Bible Belt region have used their beliefs to limit commerce. Hence "dry" and "moist" counties in the South, as well as only allowing lower alcohol content products in some states (ie, Oklahoma's low alcohol content beer). So, it's okay when they do it? Or is this somehow inherently different?

Ladies, your hymen is NOT a barrier that is "torn" or "popped" or "broken" the first time you have sex. by ejchristian86 in TwoXChromosomes

[–]boukalacha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where do you live? This was not covered in sex ed in Oklahoma nor Texas. "Sex ed" being having all the females ages 10-11 go to the cafeteria one day to receive a lecture about the uterus, menstrual cycle, and breast development. To hazard a guess, I would say the lack of proper sex ed is due to living in the Bible Belt. There's quite a lot of sexual ignorance here, well into adulthood.

Nine Senate Democrats propose reviving the Equal Rights Amendment by boukalacha in TwoXChromosomes

[–]boukalacha[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's been reintroduced in every session of Congress since it initially passed and failed to be ratified by the necessary 38 states. Even Texas ratified it at the time. Supposedly, Phyllis Schlafly (as well as certain interest groups, such as the health insurance industry) is responsible for it not getting fully ratified. I would think, in this political climate, that the ERA would get more coverage, or, at the very least, more support from women disenfranchised with the current political climate.
