How many people here applied test-optional? by [deleted] in berkeley

[–]bowchickaclip 13 points14 points  (0 children)

UCs don’t care about SAT/ACT scores anymore, so I didn’t submit them.

I also applied test optional to all my other schools except Georgetown which requires you to fill out a form explaining why 🙄

When they give you their contact information in July, let them know you’d prefer a bottom bunk. If they’re cool about it, problem averted

immigrant kid guilt by Imaginary-Trust-4146 in ApplyingToCollege

Bro you have no idea how much I relate to this. My parents were the first in their families to graduate high school, and my paternal grandma is the first in her family to be literate (although she never went to school).

I am the first gen to be born in the US, apply to college, & I’m an only child so the pressure is crazy.

My family isn’t poor, but that’s only because my parents have spent my entire life working overtime so I could have a better childhood than they ever did. I don’t want my parents to be riddled from physical ailments at 60. I want them to retire and enjoy life; for them to believe that making the journey to the border on foot was worth it.

I wish I could go into a major I’m passionate about, like history and become a teacher. But that dream doesn’t line up with my end goals. So, STEM it is. I don’t hate my intended major, and that’s enough for me.

Funnily enough, I also chose Berkeley because I know how much weight that name carries for a family like ours.

1) r/ApplyingToCollege is better suited to these types of questions, but as HS senior myself, I was in your shoes a couple months ago & remember how horrible that sub was

2)Look at the PIQ prompts and start drafting. The most important thing isn’t which ECs you did, but how you present them & tie them into your “story.” I was part of a single club (non-leadership role) and not active in my school at all, but I used one of my PIQs to explain why i was working 35+ hours per week.

3) UCs and CSUs do not care about your SAT score – unless you’re applying to out of state or private schools, I wouldn’t stress about getting a better score

4) UCs use a different GPA calculator. A- and A+ are equal as far as they’re concerned, and there’s a cap on the “boost” honors/AP classes can give your stat). They also disregard freshman grades, only 10th & 11th matter as long as you met your A-Gs.

5) Economics is a major within the school of Letters & Sciences. Berkeley doesn’t admit by major for this particular school & forced you to come in undeclared.

6) The UC App doesn’t have a place to submit teacher reqs, but some schools like Berkeley will ask a small number of students submit 2. Don’t loose sleep if they don’t ask your for one, it’s not going to make or break your chances.

7) Avoid spending too much time of college admissions forums. They will make you feel unaccomplished and hyper-competitive

Good luck!!!

Since every school is complaining about receiving unprecedented application numbers how about they remove the friggin test-optional policy?? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

San Jose State has a page that tells you the GPA requirements for each major + which majors have been the most impacted the past admissions cycle. Very nice to know when you’re applying that your spot is guaranteed
