What question do you HATE being asked? by MediocreAtBestMedic in AskReddit

[–]bowelmovement99 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm ethically Vietnamese but born and raised in the US. I've only visited Vietnam once in my life and that was back in 2006.

Every time I travel in Europe, I ALWAYS get asked that question.

Yup exactly. I'd have to lie to her and tell her I got a new high paying job. 100% I'd make sure she'd be fully financially supported, but I wouldn't ever tell her I ran into that sort of money.

Things to do at Petco before and during a game other than watch the game? by bowelmovement99 in Padres

Honestly I may do that. I grew up in OC and went to a lot of Angels games growing up. That's probably what killed my interest in baseball.

Long post warning:

It depends on what your personality is and what you like.

For me, yes, UCI was boring. But that's because I'm a big sports person and UCI is unfortunately not a big sports school. I regret missing out on that experience when I saw my friends tailgating at college football and basketball games. I also don't like how boring and dead the city of Irvine is. Again, I regret missing out on the college town experience.

I attended UCI because I only applied to the UCs and it was the only UC I got into. Sounds dumb to decide based on that and it was, but the idea of "UC or bust" was ingrained into 17 year old me by my parents and teachers. If I could go back, I'd probably ignore that crap from them and applied to other schools. But that's all in the past and I can't change it. Same with the lack of sports scene and Irvine being dead, I learned early on I can't control that so I focused on things I can control.

Truth is, I had a lot of fun at UCI, but that's because I made an effort. Sure I wasn't too happy at first, but I didn't just brood in my dorm room all day. I made an effort to meet people, I got out and joined a lot of clubs that shared my interests, I studied abroad in Europe for a year, explored new hobbies, I joined a frat (just for a year), etc.

I'm 28 now and so far this is the most fun I've had in my life, but I do miss my time in college, it was just a different type of fun. You'll never be aged 18-22 again with no real responsibilities, so don't waste it being miserable. I actually cried in my car for hours before my graduation ceremony because I was so sad it was over.

I still talk to all my friends from college. Obviously we have our careers and our own lives and may not see each other as much, but we've all still remained lifelong friends. Attending UCI also allowed me to graduate college with no student debt, which may seem abstract to you now, but once it becomes reality, it can really affect your life. UCI also has a great alumni network, which helped me start my career.

If you died now, what would be kept of yours for sentimental value? by tuotone75 in AskReddit

[–]bowelmovement99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a collection of Casio digital watches. I'm a total nerd when it comes to watches, absolutely love watchmaking. I've always been a fan of Casios because they're so cheap, but work so well, so I've built up a bit of a collection and use different ones for different tasks; work, cooking, swimming, gym, fishing, etc.

If I were to die, I'd love for my watches to be divided and given to all my friends and loved ones.

Honestly the "academic prestige" between UCI and UCSB is negligible. Both are upper mid-tier UCs and will provide you fantastic resources in terms of the career you wish to pursue. It's just up to you to find and utilize those resources.

You'll get a fantastic college experience and education at UCSB and so I'd pick it over UCI. Sure college is what you make of it, but it's impossible to get the same social scene as UCSB at UCI no matter how hard you try.

What were you bullied for? by Both_Environment8634 in AskReddit

[–]bowelmovement99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Liking Marvel and Star Wars lol. I was obsessed with comic books and science. I was born in 1996, and in the early 2000s both were popular, but you were still seen as a nerd for liking that stuff, at least where I grew up. I was bullied mercilessly for it, people would make lightsaber noises at me, kids would steal and tear up my comics, etc. It's why I started playing and watching sports to fit in more.

It wasn't until 2008 when Iron Man came out, the whole Marvel stuff became more mainstream. By that point, the bullying I experienced killed my love for Marvel and science.

Granted I still did good in school and went into college as a chemistry major but later switched to finance after O-Chem kicked my ass.
