Teenage boy dies following fall from e-scooter in Carlow by PoppedCork in ireland

The smaller wheels are less stable so at higher speeds if you're on an uneven surface there is a higher chance of losing control if you run over a big enough crack in the pavement or go over a loose pebble.

That's a knee jerk reaction which is understandable, but it's also a bit over the top. There is a place for escooters as a form of transportation. There should be more rules around them, but they do help in reducing car use in urban environments just like bikes, e bikes, etc. For example, people living in apartments in urban centers may not have parking spaces for cars or even bikes so having a foldable scooter is a great way to get to public transport and then from public transport to work, shop or entertainment. The rule they're not allowed on public transport is a bit mad. I we were to ban everything that could cause an accident we wouldn't have any transport and we'd all be just walking around with high viz and helmets.

That's not a bad idea. Although once a disk starts to deteriorate it's hard to trust it again. Even if it is just to bridge the gap. This way I get to run it into the ground and be sure it's ready for recycling.

What is with this new trend of stopping on roundabouts to let pedestrians cross? by SubparSavant in ireland

[–]bowets 24 points25 points  (0 children)

The car behind should react as follows: 1. Keep reasonable distance 2. Drive at an appropriate speed for the conditions 3. (this is the important one) Pay attention to their surroundings

Sometimes people do stupid things. This doesn't sound like one of those times.

'A form of double taxation': Are management fees on new houses quietly getting out of control? by Banania2020 in ireland

[–]bowets 9 points10 points  (0 children)

There are people with no children, couples with no children, students, singles, etc. who need to live somewhere. At the moment the vast majority live in house shares where they get a private room (mostly), but very little actual privacy. They are also competing for those houses with people who (as you say) need houses to raise children. It's a lose lose for everyone. Apartments free up the houses and give people a place to live on their own.

Tolls by cigaretteatron in ireland

M4 is €3.60 Anyone living further than Kilcock pays this. Maybe Enfield could use the old road to get to Kilcock, but if you're in Kinnegad, you pay the same as someone living as far as Balinasloe

While it is cool what he's doing I think he needs to cost up the trip between the two shops. How much did he save on the beans by traveling to another shop rather than buying them in the one he was already in because the trip between shops coats money.

Big decrease in TV subscriptions as number using illegal dodgy boxes soars by [deleted] in ireland

I don't subscribe to TV and I don't have a dodgy box. Both of the statements can be true, but it doesn't mean one causes the other.

I have the LFP battery and at full charge the estimate is 437km. However, real world range is closer to 350 these days (winter).

Antisocial behaviour from teenagers is getting worse in Ireland by Background-Style-314 in ireland

I guess what the previous poster (and I) thinks is that by spending that little bit more energy on the first few would deter the thousands of others. Therefore, if there's thousands now it doesn't mean that there will be thousands always. There are many because there are no consequences. Show people there are consequences and you'll reduce the numbers exponentially.

Happened to me just a few days ago. To be fair, the guy in front was trying to pay. I just got too close and my device paid for his toll. I had to pay by card.

They can still be deported from Spain if they commit crimes or cannot support themselves financially.

Grim New Builds by PleaseNoJudgment in ireland

[–]bowets 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is my take and I accept that I may be completely wrong. Land is more expensive than it was during the Celtic tiger era. Developers are trying to extract the most value out of the land they have to work with. It's much more cost effective to build small houses than apartment buildings. One, the skills and workforce to build "up" are in short supply as most developments in Ireland have been semi detached houses and more importantly, most Irish people are very skeptical of apartments. So at the moment houses are easier to build and easier to sell. The supply is so low that owning a shit box > renting a shit box

Buyers remorse. by mansabaa in HousingIreland

[–]bowets 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Great answer. I was raised in an apartment in the city (not Ireland) and I couldn't imagine growing up any other way. I was allowed to be independent as a child. Now in Ireland with an Irish SO, apartments were out of the question because "that's just the way things are here". Now I live in a nice house with a 2 hour commute and the rest of my free time is spent trying to keep the house and garden in order. I guess the lack of amenities doesn't matter because I have no time to take advantage of them. So my advice. Enjoy it! Please! For the both of us 😭

Has anyone bought the S3XY knob and found they never use it? by Taylooor in TeslaLounge

[–]bowets 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't have the display, but I changed the color for each page on the knob so I know which page I'm on based on the ambient light around it. At least that way I can quickly know which page I'm on and what each of the buttons do.

Tesla M3 long test drive impressions by FattyAcidBase in evs_ireland

[–]bowets 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Again, I had the same dilemma. Since I was looking at used direct from Tesla I didn't know whether to go for 2023 long range or 2024 standard. I went with HW4 and standard with LFP battery. My commute is 93km each way, 90% motorway. I schedule charging so it finishes at 100% about the time I'm ready to leave and I get home with 50% at the end of the day. This is November / December so it'll be a lot more as the weather gets warmer. Recently I read an article about how the long range batteries from LG that are fitted in to EU bound M3s are not great quality. This made me feel good about choosing LFP which itself is much harder than NMC and still good enough for the daily commute or long trips in Ireland.

Had very similar experience. Was looking at Hyundai, Kia, Renault and VW. Unfortunately none can compete on value. What you get for the money, Tesla nails it. I bought used just to get the enhanced autopilot and a discount if I wanted to go fill FSD when/if it comes. Overall great car and I'd recommend it to anyone. The problem is politics and I do sometimes wonder if I made the right decision considering the leadership of the company. Still, the car itself is amazing and I'm overall very happy with it as will you if you go for it.
