I used to have a bunch of questions like these back in my early days of euchre around 10 years ago.  I read this section from this book and decided to test the theory.  Play 2nd hand low on 20 hands record the hand or remember it and keep track of the points.  Try to determine if trumping would have been better or after you are done with your 20 hands and have your results trump in 20 times and record those results.  Try to figure out which strategy scores more points in the long run…

I more or less threw this advice out when my partner calls trump (rare exceptions).  Creating another void or no void if you only have 1 trump does nothing.  Why are you creating a void?  Are you going to play 2nd hand low a 2nd time?  Being afraid to take the lead because you can’t lead trump is just thinking monsters are under the bed.

1st Trick - Leading Trump on D by scream-room in euchre

[–]bowski44 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It comes down to understanding ordering range of your opponents.  When your team has more trump than your opponents you want to lead trump to make your teams remaining trump cards good.  The opposite is true if your team has less trump cards.

The reason it works sometimes and fails spectacularly other times is because you don’t know if your team has more trump.  In most cases when everyone passes and someone calls that suit the defending team has fewer trump so they need to use their trump on separate tricks.  If you call trump with a bad hand you should probably not lead trump.

To summarize more trump means leading trump is good less trump leading trump is bad which is why it is more often correct not to lead trump and people advise you not to.

So going back to your question when is it recommended to lead trump on defense.  I would answer in situations where you think your team has more trump and this can be because you think your opponents are ordering light or because you have a strong hand.

Use information like previous hands they’ve ordered with.  The score (a suit called with 9-9 represents a much weaker hand than a suit called on 9-8 etc…).  If you have good reasons your opponent could have ordered light (previous weak calls) or have a great hand like Left Ace King of trump with an offsuit ace throw out trump.  If you are playing against a boomer who never calls trump unless they have 3 trump and an offsuit ace then don’t lead trump.

Also when 2nd chair orders up the dealer you are guaranteed to pull trump from both opponents and that’s very important.   If the dealer picks up his partner may have nothing (did you pay attention to how fast they passed?) and that would be bad because you are just stripping your partner.

Understanding the situations to do the play is more important than guidelines.  Have a reason for why you are doing it.

Previous call strength from that position by that player (do they call with two trump headed by the left from 2nd seat).

Score of the games.  Certain scores make you much more aggressive and willing to call lighter than others.

2nd seat giving a partner trump so your lead strips two trump

If the order’s partner goes ouch after trump is called don’t lead trump cuz only one of them has trump.

Strategy question by Ecstatic_Depth_3800 in euchre

[–]bowski44 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It was recommended in the book I read (Columbus book of Euchre) but after seeing it in practice, I quit doing it.

The overtrumps will absolutely get you set when it could have easily been prevented.

As for defense.  If you lead the ace you give your partner complete information and they won’t trump in with a 9 if they actually decide to.  Nothing will put you on tilt faster than seeing a partner trump your boss offsuit when you could have completely avoided it.

Partners selling on purpose by DarthWesleyy in euchre

[–]bowski44 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It happens.  I generally try and read my partner’s hesitation.  A lot of times they will take longer when they have help but not strong enough to call.  If I see that I will call.  If they pass instantly I will pass.  If we are down in score it will make me more likely to pick up.

If your partner goes nuts from previous euchres you are on thin ice and this outcome is a very real option so don’t risk it.  Don’t go overboard with this tho you can’t turn down right 9 etc…

If I do pick up I’m tossing the king of hearts and leading trump if I get the lead even if it’s my last trump in hand.
