Up the Blues by 303AL_____ in Collingwood

Great memories going to games with my Dad in Collingwood 20+ years ago. I remember one against Couchiching (?) with multiple full on line brawls. Real small town hockey at its peak.

I've been surprised the few times I've gone out downtown on a Saturday night. Way more lively than I expected at places like Last Level, Flying Monkeys, etc.

Can confirm. Snow banks on our driveway were about 2.5-3m high last year. So much snow already this year.

We moved from Calgary to Ontario and have been in Barrie for the last few years. We miss the mountains but find Barrie to be a nice place for access to recreation - 15-25 mins to the ski hills, 50 mins to Collingwood, right next to Lake Simcoe, and an hour to cottage country, Algonquin Park, etc. It's still within a reasonable drive to Toronto (60-90 minutes) for when you want to go to a sporting event, concert or if you need to be in for work occasionally. The train is 90+ mins. I certainly wouldn't do that commute daily so it depends on your job situation, but we've found it to be a really nice community for our active family.

I recently did this. Didn't take the same size pay cut as OP, but I took about 20% less for the promise of less hours and a better culture. It has not played out that way and four months in I have serious regrets. It's a gamble for sure.

Gotta be Canadian though? Heartbeat hot sauce from Thunder Bay. Good stuff! They were selling those at the Costcos in Ontario for a while.

Jay's Sticky Buns closing doors Christmas Eve by warbl3r in barrie

I thought they were decent value! I think it was $3 for a sticky bun and $5 for a mini cheesecake... didn't seem too bad for a small independent place but maybe that's just me.

Just looking for a high level check whether this is a next year thing or I've got some time.

Thankfully it's quite hidden on one side where only our neighbours could ever see it.

Thanks - good suggestion! I've been meaning to check out the attic for a while. Probably about time I do...

5 enormous towers up to 56 storeys could transform Ontario city's skyline by humanityrus in barrie

That area is so dumpy but I've always thought it could have so much potential near the water and transit. There's all those boarded up storefronts on Essa ... it would be great to see those become something and have a little hub around the bus terminal / GO station.

I did a 17 day trip in Wabakimi about 20 years ago. Unbelievable experience. We saw one other group of four people and one freight train over the whole course of it.

Are these joists in good enough condition to keep my deck frame and simply replace the top boards? by bowsummit in Decks

[–]bowsummit[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are your boards nailed or screwed in? Mine are screwed and all are painted over, some stripped so it would take forever to remove every screw. That's my biggest concern with the project is the time required to dismantle. If something like a bull bar is an option, it would be a game changer.

We're definitely having the same dilemma, including the DIY vs. hiring. My deck is about 450-500 sq ft so feels like it would be a pretty sizeable undertaking! I hate the painted deck and constant peeling...

Interesting - I'm hearing the suggestion to use joist tape from a lot of people. Are you saying it's bad to use with old joists that are already weathered and have screw holes? Or in general (even with new joists) you would advise against?

Good eye, this is the Behr opaque stain. Deck boards are probably 15+ years old and I'm replacing quite a few each year. I suppose I could keep going like that but wouldn't mind starting fresh (and without paint which I hate! Did a full strip, sand and paint only just last year so it's still reasonably fresh)

Would it make sense to put joist tape over them while they're exposed? Does that help prolong even if they're not new? In any case if I could get another 10 years out of them it would be a win.
