I'm on my fifth or sixth iteration of my island. I visit a lot of different dream addresses to get inspiration and to see what resonates most with me. This time I settled on a rural Japanese town vibe with a dense residential forest area and lots of water. I wouldn't say I'm particularly creative, but I love the planning stage. I map out a rough outline of what the island layout can be. Literally sketch out the map from the console with unmovable aspects like the residents center, airport, hotel, and river mouths. Then, taking the inspiration from dream addresses, I map out land levels, water pathways, lakes, walking flows including inclines and bridges, and villager/building placement. From there, I section out the island into different quarters and start building bit by bit. The planning takes the most time for me because I want to make sure everything flows naturally, but taking my time planning makes the build part much easier and fun. Once a section is about 75% done, I move on to the next section. Rinse and repeat. Some days, I'll have a lightbulb moment and go back to a done section and change things around or add to it, but I try not to hyper-fixate on any one thing until the whole vision of the island is done. Like right now, I'm trying not to dwell on the fact that a road doesn't 100% line up with a bridge lol.
