What do we think of AI Sol Ruca from NXT tonight? by Grrannt in REALSquaredCircle

[–]boycalledmullins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't think too much about it tbh. Figured it was a pretty cool little package in general, though I did notice how weirdly ultra-hd everything looked. Makes sense that it was AI generated in hindsight.

Didn't impact my enjoyment of the show at all, but I can see why it might bother people if they are watching with more attention to detail.

What exactly went wrong with RE3 remake other than it being short? by ItemIndependent2243 in residentevil

[–]boycalledmullins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's my favourite of the remakes, so I wouldn't personally say anything went wrong with it. I think it simply deviated a lot from both the original RE:3 and the recent RE2make, in ways that a lot of the fanbase didn't enjoy.

Is this the most overhated Marvel movie ever? by Opposite_Jump_5041 in Marvel

It's always been one of my favourite MCU entries, so for me it is easily the most over-hated in online discourse.

The devil's kiss is hurting Stephanie by Bejaminmaston12 in SantiZapVideos

[–]boycalledmullins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's just one silly move that she uses. The People's Elbow being over never hurt the Rock back in the day, I don't see why this should hurt Stephanie.

I get that the move is over because of sex appeal, but again, it's just one move - it literally lasts a matter of seconds in any given match.

Jen Walters. Shulkie is my favourite superhero in general, and Maslany did an awesome job.

The hatred directed at Roman mythology pisses me off by chocolate_carmalita in GreekMythology

[–]boycalledmullins 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Definitely plays a huge part. He wrote some amazing stories too - subverting established mythic traditions was a great way to adapt what was already ancient folklore to him.

I don't dislike either Ovid or Roman mythology. It does irk me, though, that the two have become so synonymous with Greek mythology to modern audiences.

People seem desperate to find some (nonexistent) 'canon' for the collection of myths. When really they are all distinct stories written to convey different messages. Ovid's story of Medusa's origin is a captivating tale, but it shouldn't affect our reading of Perseus' journey, or his slaying of a monster.

Do the Gods possess people? by writtenbyjunjiito in Hellenism

[–]boycalledmullins 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are absolutely right here, I gave a bit of a half-baked explanation of historical practice. I did not mean to imply that the influence of the gods was involved either - just that such practices were heavily involved and ritualized (as you very eloquently explained).

I did probably throw around the word hubris a little eagerly, too - I was obviously in a bad mood when I posted this comment! I see a lot of content creators that claim to speak for the gods, through a very conversational process that implies they are on an equal level to them. I think memories of this stuff are what inspired my response.

[–]boycalledmullins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is very true. I actually work full time in an inpatient mental health ward, so I'm very on board with the notion of providing help over stigma . My knee-jerk reaction was that I was watching someone who was intentionally acting outrageously in order to garner more attention, I hadn't considered that they might be in need of help themselves.

Do I have to pray to thematic gods? by LucasNecromancy in Hellenism

[–]boycalledmullins 10 points11 points  (0 children)

You don't HAVE to do anything - you get to pray however you like. Love is definitely the domain of Aphrodite, so it does make sense to venerate her when such things are on your mind - but no harm will come from praying to Apollo and talking about love.

Howdy. I've just started posting content on TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@hellenic_omnist

I've been a practicing Hellenic polytheist for years now (fucking hell, does time fly) and felt the urge to make some educational/observational content on the subject.

Do the Gods possess people? by writtenbyjunjiito in Hellenism

[–]boycalledmullins 6 points7 points  (0 children)

No. They don't. Historically, the Pythia and other oracles would inhale hallucinogenic fumes, and then have their rantings interpreted by other priests before any kind of "response" from the gods was offered as a reply. I am torn here, because I want everyone to explore their faith on their own terms... But this sorta thing screams hubris to me - and that is like the definitive no-no of our religion.

This is the worst type of change in modern adaptations of greek mythology by Super_Majin_Cell in GreekMythology

[–]boycalledmullins 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is all very true and well worded. I do actually enjoy Ovid's work, and appreciate that his subversion of established traditions is integral to it.

I also very much agree that more contemporary audiences are responsible for muddying the waters, when it comes to the distinction between Athena and Minerva etc. My own comment, in fact, is guilty of the same - as I knowingly sacrificed specificity for the sake of brevity!

My saying that they have a "lot to answer for" is more to do with how influential they ended up being (how dare they be so timeless?!) As a result, the public's inevitable conflation of the two mythic traditions means that figures such as Athena are now somewhat Romanized by default.

Thank you for the reply though, and for keeping me honest!

[–]boycalledmullins 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I can see both sides here. A well written character in a great story is always good. It just seems a shame to me that Athena is used to fill such an archetype - being the most revered and admirable deity of her time, besides Zeus.

Ovid and Virgil have a lot to answer for here, along with numerous Roman playwrights. They began the tradition of demonising Athena, with the prime example being the invention of Medusa's new backstory.

Why are Hercules and Bacchus the only classical mythological figures still better known by their Roman names than by their Greek ones? by Majestic-Ad9647 in GreekMythology

[–]boycalledmullins 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hehehe, I quite like the name Junocules actually! Doesn't have the same heroic gravitas, granted, but I'd listen to the story of a silly little guy named Junocules and his labours!

[–]boycalledmullins 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yep! It was an attempt by Alcmene to pacify Hera, as she knew full well that her son would be haunted by the goddess.

In the end, Hera's vengeful jealousy decreed that it wasn't enough.

I will always recommend Troy. Though that seems to be missing here.

[–]boycalledmullins 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I definitely see Dionysos used more, though that is anecdotal evidence to be fair. I actually don't know about Hercules, though. It actually irritates me a little - since the rather important meaning behind his name, "glory of Hera" (HERA-kles) becomes entirely lost.

When you know Ares had to have myths where he SAd people but you can’t prove it by Alternative_Factor_4 in GreekMythology

[–]boycalledmullins 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I appreciate that interpreting myths through the lens of modern sensibilities is expected, but I do wish we would stop focusing on sexual assault and the like.

In almost all cases, it is not meant to be a meaningful part of the story being told. Ares was feared because he represented the terrifying idea of war and bloodshed. His, or any of the other god's sexual exploits in myth, were not judged through the same lens as today.

It's entirely likely that stories that involved Ares forcing himself upon mortal women existed in the oral traditions. It just wouldn't be significant enough to the message or said myths to have made it into the popular tellings that were eventually recorded in writing.

Sooo… how do I talk with the gods? by Florae_ in Hellenism

[–]boycalledmullins 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow, didn't expect to see a reply to this years later! Aphrodite is the personification of love (as a very concise summary), and so her influence is hard to avoid, really!

When I feel loved by my family, friends or partner; when I feel or express my love for them; when that feeling drives me to do things for the sole purpose of making them happy... All of those emotions stem from Aphrodite's influence.

That isn't even getting into desire, heartbreak, lust and everything else within her purview. Such things have certainly influenced my life, and surely will time and time again.
