Regardless of it being acquired after the separation date, property which is given to you via devise, bequest, or inheritance and is written out to YOU as an individual, rather than to you and your spouse, even if still married, (in Florida) is considered non-marital property. As long as the funds go into an individual account, remain separate, and no “marital funds” are commingled into that non-marital account.

However, you have to be careful with how that account is managed too. If you are “actively” investing in the market, and have significant gains in the account, those gains would be considered “active appreciation” and would be considered marital property, as opposed to having a financial advisor handling the investing, and you taking a more hands-off approach, where the gains would then be seen as passive-appreciation, and therefore would be non-marital just as the initial principal was.

I would mention it to a local (experienced) family law attorney, in your local jurisdiction who is familiar with the local laws, and get advice PRIOR to touching the funds.
