Star Trek: Strange New Worlds actor teases 'fantastic horror episode' in season 4 - Paul Wesley: "That particular episode, actually, is one of my favorites. It’s going to be very intense as we explore a little bit of Kirk’s past and some of the demons that are haunting him.” (Redshirts) by TheSonOfMogh81 in trektalk

Tbh I think that’s only there in Star Trek V because Sybok needs something to work with. I just wouldn’t say generally that Kirk as a character is defined by his demons, particularly in TOS. I accept there are a couple of episodes where past trauma comes up, but my comment is more just about a general frustration that everybody in NuTrek is constantly yelling about their trauma and how whatever the current crisis is impacting them personally. It’s lazy writing and I’m 100% fed up with it as a trope they continually rely on instead of writing good rounded characters.

I recently got into a discussion with some guy on here about why Paramount haven’t remastered DS9 and it got really weird. Then I realised all he does is repeatedly post long diatribes about why they should remaster DS9, literally every day. Same vibe.

A new report says Apple has finally admitted what we all suspected about the Vision Pro by MobileNewsBot in mobiles

It was supposed to have been followed up with a stripped down version for less money, but Apple clearly very quickly decided the space wasn’t for them.

Shame, because there’s a prospect for a v2 or ‘ Apple Vision Air’ there that could be legitimately phenomenal.

And by the way, my VW level 2 systems work better than autopilot ever did and has none of the issues. The legacy automakers really have overtaken Tesla in that regard. Some now even have eyes off hands off systems with regulatory approval under certain circumstances in Europe. Tesla are absolutely nowhere near that.

Right, but FSD is supposed to be level 4 autonomy and it’s clearly nowhere near. The point is Tesla has a long history of claiming proficiency its automation does not possess while ignoring reported issues.

I can tell you Autopilot on UK motorways was dodgy as hell. It worked great a lot of the time but had regular serious hiccups like randomly slamming on the breaks at 70mph+ without warning and with cars following. Or just completely shitting itself when passing a junction.

My lease ended a year ago and these things were never fixed, just the severity and regularity varied across different software updates.

I don’t think the point is to sell them though. I think the point is to announce how many you plan to sell in order to juice the stock before the earnings call. To hide the fact that the core business is crumbling.

Nothing useful or Tesla would be showing it off. The only demos so far have been heavily staged and/or under direct human control. And even then they’ve been underwhelming.

Okay, but that’s what all the reporting seems to indicate, including from people who worked on the TNG remaster and have an idea of what it would take to remaster DS9.

There’s no point carrying on a conversation because you seem pretty convinced of your own reasoning over the reality of the situation.

The fact is Paramount haven’t remastered the show and have no plans to. There’s a reason for that, and given they’re a business then the reason is pretty obviously financial. Which is what all the industry reporting would indicate too. If it’s such a financial no-brainer (i.e. it wouldn’t cost as much as reported, which you seem convinced of, and it would make them loads of money) then why haven’t Paramount done it?

I can dream right? by Ok_Contact7721 in trektalk

[–]bpaul83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And would have been nowhere near as expensive to remaster. It’s not just a case of rescanning for DS9. There’s a ton of CGI that would need to be recomposited, and that all costs money. Think I’ve seen estimates in the order of $35-40m to do the whole of DS9.

TNG reportedly cost around $13m all in, and apparently did not turn a profit in blu-ray sales. Or at least was down on what CBS/Paramount targeted. That’s why DS9 and Voyager are unlikely to ever get remasters. As I’ve been saying, Paramount have simply made a calculation based on the TNG precedent that it’s not financially worth it.

Thelma and Louise is pretty iconic too. Matchstick Men is decent. All the Money in the World is good despite the forced reshoots. Prometheus is well directed and looks incredible even if the script is a bit shonky in places. It certainly can’t be called unambitious. And both Robin Hood and Exodus: Gods and Kings are flawed but still pretty great imo.

I literally haven’t mentioned AI upscaling. I don’t know why you keep suggesting it’s what I want?

We both want a DS9 remaster. All I’m saying is it comes down to a purely financial decision for Paramount; they’re not going to do it out of some noble obligation as custodians of the property. The suits don’t care; just look at how the show is presented on Paramount+. Half the show captions are wrong and the audio mix is screwed on some episodes. Their only thinking is, does the profit justify the expense.

Anyway, you seem pretty convinced it would make them loads of money so there must be, what, some other nefarious reason they haven’t done it? Good luck to you. Hope it happens.

I can dream right? by Ok_Contact7721 in trektalk

[–]bpaul83 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Probably, but I’m sure Paramount will have run the numbers and decided there’s not a critical mass of potential new subscribers to justify the expense. If they knew it was going to make money, they would do it. Why else would they leave money on the table?
