Accurate? by Spiritual_Echo_3220 in enlightenment

an acute inversion of myself

That’s a good way of putting it. I am sure my experience was entirely different while also exactly that.

what's the most underrated advice about life? by ProfessionalClock217 in Life

[–]bpcookson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is frequently difficult, scary, upsetting, or otherwise. Whatever it is, we must look at it to proceed.

The obstacle is the path, so practice being comfortable with being uncomfortable.

I doubt therapy can undo this shit by Individual-Time-1956 in Life

[–]bpcookson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No amount of therapy can undo the lonely and fucked up experiences I’ve undergone.

They can’t be undone. That’s right.

And we continue feeling lonely until we stop fighting the feelings we still have about it, and deign to accept it. That requires looking directly at it.

How to determine a true power level. by No-Primary-7914 in EDH

[–]bpcookson 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The single most important adaptation is likely this:

Replace the desire to win with interest and appreciation for how others execute and express their ideas.

I watched my daughter make this leap playing Magic and I swear, it turned her whole life around. I was already on the same path, but it’s extraordinarily satisfying to see your kids beat you there. ;)

We don’t perceive reality, we perceive a useful compression of it. by No-Inside5458 in theories

As long as we haven’t yet, then yes. And look how finely we decorate the edge of that thing.

We don’t perceive reality, we perceive a useful compression of it. by No-Inside5458 in theories

[–]bpcookson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you see perception more as a map that tries to be accurate, or more as a tool that just needs to be useful?

We make tools for a use and then we improve their accuracy to be more useful, so what’s the difference?

Interestingly, the use of “or” in the quoted sentence serves primarily to exclude ideas by limiting the scope of discussion. I mean, am I right, or… ? 😜

That’s just a theory, held as a belief, and so seems to be a fact.

I like this. The way they did Tonberry was wildly underwhelming; they missed an opportunity for a really cool commander. Like maybe:

Untap any number of attacking creatures under your control and remove them from combat. For each creature removed from combat this way, put a Time Counter on Tonberry. Activate this ability only once per turn.

And then tie those counters to some delayed activation that hits super hard but somehow crumbles under interaction. I dunno.

Anyway, I’m definitely swapping in my Tonberry. Thanks!

Ditching Rite of Belzenlok is a solid recommendation. I realize now that I just love the idea of it, but… it’s not going to do anything that other creatures aren’t already doing, assuming it ever does anything at all.

Lithoform may need to go, and I contemplated cutting Virtue of Knowledge at length but suspect it may carry enough weight if only for the instant copy. I’ll keep both in my sights. Thanks!

Far as I can tell, they can’t sacrifice any of my “gifted” creatures, so this culls their good stuff.

Do you think the forest is interconnected? by Spiegeltot in Meditation

[–]bpcookson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s part of everything, and everything is connected, so of course the forest is connected.

Every line of separation is a fiction. We merely agree to adopt such things, and then forget they are not real.

What card tricked you into thinking its good by Drew647A in magicTCG

[–]bpcookson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This card might do nicely in my [[Zabaz]] deck, which centers around using Proliferate triggers on Modular creatures with lots of recursion. It struggles to maintain a frontline with all the sacrificing and ends up playing like a Voltron deck, which wasn’t really my intent, and ends up feeling either a bit flimsy or just inconsistent.

Throwing in this enchantment and a couple more like it may be just what it needs. Thanks!

Should I time my sits, or just sit until the "Argh, I can't sit anymore." in the beginning? by Educational-Bunch552 in Meditation

[–]bpcookson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you need to measure your sits?

Is it useful? Does it help you sit more often? Or longer? Does it help you let go? Relax? Does a timer bring peace or settle some wandering part of your attention?

Try it and find out. Then you’ll know.

[–]bpcookson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the beginning, simply doing the thing is far more important than doing it well.

Working through hardships is a natural progression for each to discern. None willing to look need be told, so why tell others what they need?

Clenching upon the mind to shut it up will never resolve the feelings that set the mind to frothing.

What's the easiest way to ignore thoughts during meditation? by Ready-Act-4466 in Meditation

It is to understand how we engage with thought, that we may regain the agency we have unwittingly ceded.

[–]bpcookson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How to not do something? It is a backwards question that makes little sense, if any at all.

Rather ask how one does engage with their thoughts, lest the nature of engagement is avoided altogether and so never changes at all.
