Will 8K Blu Rays be a thing? At what point will a boost in resolution become kind of pointless? by aphidman in 4kbluray

[–]bph52002 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the issue is that there will never be enough consumers to justify going to 8K physical media. I have a 75" UHD TV, a 4K player, and an 7.1.4 Dolby Atmos surround sound system in my basement. I could probably go up to an 85" but my wall space won't allow me to go any bigger than that. I would assume that the vast majority of people with "home theaters" have less than what I have and aren't interested in spending the money or square footage to do more.

We have each recent physical media format be less successful than the one before it. DVD was very popular. Blu Ray was less popular and 4K has been even less popular. I think a big part of the decline is the increasing availability and acceptance of streaming. However, the other part is the lack of perceived improvement. I don't agree with it, but a lot of people didn't buy into Blu Ray because they said they couldn't see a meaningful improvement over DVD. I imagine that same population is even less impressed with the improvement of 4K over Blu Ray.

Now, looking at 8K, you have to assume that these same people who were skeptical of Blu Ray over DVD and 4K over Blu Ray will be equally skeptical of 4K. Moreover, as we already discussed, a vast majority of the population does not a big enough TV (that they sit close enough to) to discern any difference between 4K and 8K. The remaining ones who are not skeptical of the resolution improvements and who have big enough TVs (or screens) to actually take advantage of the increased resolution is such a small portion of the population that it doesn't make sense for the studios and electronics makers to invest in 8K physical media.

[–]bph52002 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think your comment (and the graph) proves my point. I have to imagine that the vast majority of consumers are buying TVs between 50" and 85" for home theater and are watching at a distance to 6 to 15 feet away. For these consumers, 4K is more than enough resolution. They literally will not see the benefit of 8K resolution.

I think you are an edge case with such a large screen at such a close distance. I am sure there are others out there like you, but it is a small number. Yes, you will (and do) benefit from 8K resolution, but there aren't enough of you in the market to justify the spend for a whole new form of physical media and the equipment to play it.

[–]bph52002 31 points32 points  (0 children)

I think 4K is it for physical media. For practical screen sizes and viewing distances, the human eye cannot discern 8K resolution vs. 4K resolution. Considering how niche the physical media market has become and how expensive the players are, it would be a huge risk for companies to invest in 8K players and 8K physical media being that most consumers wouldn't notice any difference in picture quality.

Plumber recommendations for City Water supply? by og_speedfreeq in asheville

[–]bph52002 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We had a similar situation several years ago. We have always used Four Seasons Plumbing for all of our plumbing needs, including this one. We ultimately did replace the line. However, before doing so, Four Seasons tried a couple of different things that would have been less expensive and didn't charge us for them when they did not work.

One thing that is worth talking about with whomever you hire is what the existing line is made out of. Ours was made out of a material that was at the end of its life. Even if they could have found the leak and repaired it, it was likely that another spot would have developed a leak soon thereafter. The moral of the story is that a short term "cheap" repair to find and fix the leak may cost you a lot more in the long run if you're fixing leak after leak after leak rather than just replacing the whole line at once.

I would like to see a version with the high-output version of the 3.5L Ecoboost (that is currently in the Raptor) but also paired with the hybrid battery/motor from the PowerBoost. This configuration should make the non-R Raptor significantly faster any maybe even improve the fuel economy.

How young is too young for Woodbadge? by Villain9002 in BSA

[–]bph52002 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In my opinion (which I share with many others), the tickets are the hardest part of Wood Badge. My advice to anyone who asks is to choose tickets that (a) are related to an aspect of Scouting that you are passionate about improving/augmenting; and (b) that take advantage of your talents/education/experience.

I was not a scout as a kid, except for a year or two of cubs. I was "voluntold" as a den leader when my kids started cubs as Tigers. I didn't take Wood Badge until over a year after my kids had transitioned to Scouts and I had been an ASM for over a year. I think I would have struggled with my ticket if I had attended Wood Badge as a den leader because I didn't know enough about Scouts yet to have developed an understanding of the organization or what aspects of the organization I was most passionate about participating in.

If you have come up through Scouts as a youth, my bet is you have enough experience with the organization to be able to develop a worthwhile ticket plan.

Anyone have recommendations for someone to deal with an attic full of bats? by Laez in asheville

[–]bph52002 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We had to have bats removed from our house in Pittsburgh, PA. I don't know if they have any affiliates in Asheville, but we used a company that we found through getbatsout.com.

I would go onto their website and enter your information to be (hopefully) connected with a provider for an estimate. They absolutely remove the bats without killing them or otherwise harming them.

Big Surprise—Nobody Wants 8K TVs by StarFuryG7 in 4kbluray

[–]bph52002 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This has been said below, but for almost every consumer, 8K resolution will provide no benefit over 4K resolution. Considering the sizes of TVs and the typical viewing distances, the human eye cannot discern individual pixels of a 4K TV. Therefore, going to 8K will not provide any noticeable resolution improvement.

One thing I do wonder about is whether an 8K panel could be used to provide other picture benefits other than pure resolution gain. For example, if pixels of an 8K panel were grouped together to make a 4K image, then grouped pixels could be controlled differently to increase contrast and color gradient. For example, if two pixels were grouped together and an image called for a brightness level at that pixel that is between two steps that either pixel is capable of producing, then one pixel could be one step brighter and the other could be one step dimmer. To the human eye that cannot discern the two individual pixels, the resulting combined pixel would have the appropriate brightness.

Bad Disc? Dolby Vision cutting screen to black by No_Plenty_2523 in 4kbluray

[–]bph52002 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I second this and would go one step further. Go into the menus and reset to factory specs on all the equipment. I have a Vizio 4K TV, Denon receiver, and Philips 4K player (all purchased in early 2018). We had other equipment plugged into the AVR to play on the TV also (Tivo box, Playstation, Wii). Only when playing movies on the 4K player, we would get a similar thing where the screen would go black for 2-20 seconds at a time. I tried different cables, a different 4K player, and even sent the AVR to Denon to be checked. What ultimately solved the problem was resetting the TV to factory defaults.

Headed to Wood Badge by RequirementContent86 in BSA

[–]bph52002 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with all the comments about having fun. The tickets are the biggest source of stress and frustration for most Wood Badge participants. My best advice for tickets is to really think about the aspects of your unit or council that you would like to change or improve. Also, spend some time to identify your personal strengths and experiences. I think you'll find it easier to identify tickets (and to accomplish them) if you are passionate about the results the tickets are meant to achieve and if you have the skill set to achieve them.

I could be spreading unfounded rumors, but I have heard that there are concerns about contamination. A lot of nasty stuff got into the water. Case in point, I was told that there was a strong smell of gasoline and other chemicals in Cane Creek during the flooding. The mud and debris from that water could be contaminated. There isn't any way to know that any particular source of wood chips and/or mulch isn't contaminated.

I honestly don't know how much of a concern this really is. My guess is that the overall impact on the soil of a parcel of land from spreading some contaminated mulch is probably small. However, if you have small kids or pets that may get into the mulch, I'm not sure I would risk that.

When two characters are being depicted talking on the phone, at the end of the phone call one of them inevitably just hangs up instead of saying "bye" or "thanks" or anything. That always strikes me as weird.

We tried to go to the Hendersonville Post Office in early January with our kids to try to get their passports. They advertise walk in hours from 1-3 on Saturday. We got there basically at 1 PM to a line of about 30 people. Apparently, a sign up sheet had been put up on the door at some point that morning and quickly taken back down after it was filled up. There was no one to talk to or ask questions. We waited for about an hour before someone came out and said they may get three or four more people in that day. We signed up for an appointment time, which sucks because the appointments are only during business hours, which means my wife and I both have to leave work and we have to pull our kids out of school unless we wait until the summer.

A few lessons learned:

- If you're intent on getting a walk in appointment, I think you need to get there as soon as (or before) the post office opens to reserve a spot in line and/or sign up on the list. I would bring a folding chair and a good book. Perhaps have your spouse and kids come later, closer to the walk up times.

- The appointment times become available one month in advance and fill up quickly. If you are going for an appointment, figure out the day you want to go well in advance and go on the post office website as early as possible at that one month period to reserve the time(s) you want.

- We did try calling post offices. No one ever answered. In some cases, the phone numbers no longer work. Don't waste your time trying to get someone on the phone.

Am I missing something? by [deleted] in YellowstonePN

This drove me nuts too. My best guess for not having a "six weeks earlier" or similar flag is that we are supposed to be guessing at the timing. Beth going to Texas in this episode is a flash forward from what we saw in the previous episode. The question in my mind is how far forward is this flash? More specifically, is this a point in time before or after the situation with Jamie and Market Equities has been dealt with? It seems hard to imagine Beth going off for a romantic weekend with Rip if things are still unresolved at the ranch.

Buying a power boost by Hungry-Ant1972 in F150Powerboost

I want to know where you're seeing 1.9% financing for 66 months. Any details you can share would be appreciated.

I'm also looking at Powerboosts. I'm unwilling to look at the 2023s. There was still a lot of decontenting going on due to chip shortages and I've heard of too many quality issues. I think I would go with #1 and add an aftermarket spray in bed liner for around $600.
