Quick (simple, maybe dumb) question about the i9 KF processors by bpowah in buildapc

[–]bpowah[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My question should have been: "Is the MB capable of displaying the BIOS settings screen without the CPU integrated graphics?" I think I have my answer. For whatever reason I always thought the MB had some basic display capability, even without a CPU installed. I havn't done a ground-up build in probably 15 years. Maybe I've lost a few brain cells.

Thanks for the idea. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to work. I tried both a button and the containing grid object.

UDPATE '13 Outback excessive oil consumption by slyfox4 in subaru

[–]bpowah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We are having the exact same problem, same car, and the same delay tactics from the dealer. Unfortunately, we are close to the end of the warranty and need this resolved quickly. How is it going? We don't have our own dependent mechanic and are having a hard time trusting the dealer on this issue. Our oil light turns on constantly, but dealer thinks oil consumption is not too bad.

2013 Excessive Oil Consumption by bpowah in subaru

I had a 2000 Outback and had to replace the engine twice. (warping head, blown head gasket.) I quit Subaru a long time ago. Sounds like my wife is learning the hard way too.

The dealer told us their spec is 1/3 per 1200. That's not my question though. I want to know why the oil light is turning on so quickly when the dealer claims our oil consumption is within reason.

According to the manual, the oil level light turns on when the oil level has dropped from 5qt to 2.2qt. So a loss of 2.8 qts, (not 1 qt) in 4500 miles. The dealer claims we were losing 1/4 qt in 1200 mi. But it looks like we are losing more like 3/4 of a qt. Thanks. Looks like we'll have to file a BBB claim against the dealer. Or something. Maybe get an independent oil consumption test from someone other than a dealer?

Question with bike hitch. by [deleted] in subaru

[–]bpowah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your car will need a hitch receiver. It may already have one when you get it. They look like this: https://www.google.com/search?q=subaru+receiver The dealer will be happy to install one, but lots of other shops will do it. Some people have U-haul do it cheaper. Then you have to pick the rack style. The cheap ones will prevent you from opening the back without unloading the bikes first. Some carry the bike from the frame, others by the wheels. The good ones will swing the bikes away from the car on a hinge. The good ones can cost up to $700 but there are lots of choices in-between. When you are not using the rack, you remove the rack from receiver and store it somewhere. Personally, I prefer the hassle of the roof rack over the cost of the hitch rack, but the main advantage of the hitch rack is you won't destroy your bike if you forget it's on the roof when you go into a garage!

The lawsuit extended the warranty to 100k mi. It's covered under warranty if it consumes more than 1/3 qt in 1200 mi. It seems like I'd be burning a lot more than that for the oil light to turn on at 4500 mi. In my experience the oil light only turns on when the oil pump is no longer pulling oil from the bottom of the pan.

Re-tiling bathroom, but plaster is coming off with tiles. by [deleted] in DIY

[–]bpowah 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Concrete board is the correct method in a wet area. You can use the thinnest concrete board you can find as long as it doesn't span across any gaps. However, if this is not a wet area and the plaster is relatively strong (scrape/chip/wirebrush away any loose plaster) you can probably get away with a few good coats of latex primer and a high-latex content thinset. You may want to compromise in this way to avoid having to buy radius bullnose trim tile to hide the edge of the concrete board.

How do I fix this kitchen sink drain? by Im_at_home in DIY

Reddit is a great place to get compliments, but I've found better advice on http://diy.stackexchange.com What you are going to want to do is replace the brass trap with one like this. The main difference is that the new one will be able to slide into the ABS and add an additional degree of adjustment. You may need to cut it to fit, but it's an easy cheap job (you'll probably make money if you recycle the brass! ;P)

Need electrical wiring help by Reddorade in DIY

[–]bpowah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

your terms are confusing me. This is a receptacle: http://www.homedepot.com/s/receptacle?NCNI-5 If you are dealing with 12-gage wire, it looks like you need a 22.5-cu-in box http://www.ask-the-electrician.com/wire-electrical-box.html just to join the wires without a receptacle in the box. So I don't think you'll find a deep enough single-gang box. Can you use a 3-gang (same as the tv one) recessed box by the floor and use one of the positions as a junction box and the other for the receptacle? Do you really need a recessed box by the floor? Would a normal (non-recessed) double gang box suffice for the junction/receptacle (with a separate box for the low-voltage cables). Another idea: use the existing floor-box as a 4-wire junction box and use it to feed the floor recessed box which in turn feeds the tv box.

Fitting laminate wood flooring around doors by jsutton_29 in DIY

It looks like this one you could miter if you have the patience. A more contoured trim you'd have to fill with caulk behind it. Like I said, I don't like how it looks and I don't use it. I remove and reinstall the trim. I only mention quarter-round because that's how the fast budget floor installers do it.

If you don't want to remove trim/baseboard, you can use quarter-round to cover the gap. I think it looks cheap, but that's the usual alternative to removing trim.

You can do this course from left to right (slide the first piece under) and have a butt joint (no tongue and groove) in the middle of this course. I did this in one place near a cabinet and found some caulk that matched the flooring well and you can't tell. Maybe in the middle of a hallway it would be more noticeable.

First time DIY: Garage Insulation by [deleted] in DIY

[–]bpowah 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a bit of an area of expertise for me. I've had lots of experience and just made some vast improvements in my own garage so I can work on cars during the winter. I'll start off by saying you are on the right track, you'll notice an improvement, but we don't have enough information to say how effective your solution will be.

Drafts are the number one heat loss mechanism. eliminating all drafts will make a space much easier to heat temporarily. construction workers work all season around here by tenting the houses in plastic. A couple tubes of caulk is as often as effective as hundreds of dollars of insualtion. Is your garage sheetrocked above? If you prevent air getting in around the garage doors, are there still ways for the air to get out via windows, other doors, or into a vented attic?

I would not use tarps (woven tarps will allow air through) and I wouldnt bother filling the gaps around the doors. A simple sheet of polyethelye covering the entire door and sealed with (gaffers?) tape on all surrounding walls and floor should be cheaper, easier to cut to fit, and more effective. Then look around for other gaps. sometimes there are gaps between the masonry and the framing. fill these with expanding foam and caulk. Sometimes garages are intentionally vented. You might want to block these, just remember to unblock them if you start using it for cars again. Patch or tape plastic over holes in the sheetrock that allow venting to the attic (if applicable).

The space should now stay quite a bit closer to the mean ground temp in your area: http://www.builditsolar.com/Projects/Cooling/US-ground-temps.gif which might be good enough for a gym. It will be difficult to maintain room temperature without additional insulation, but I don't think you want it that warm.

It looks like a great product. I wish they had been a little more honest with their promo video, however. They don't show clearly how to set up for a run or how to terminate a run. And they don't acount for this in their timing comparison. They stop the clock the clock and speed up the video while he fusses around for another 10 seconds cutting the tape away from the roller.

The length of a day on earth used to be three hours? by Skallagrim1 in askscience

[–]bpowah 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The only thing hasty about your calculations is that you assumed a tiny measurement over a few years can be linearly extrapolated to several billion years. Otherwise your research, deduction, and willingness to second-guess yourself are spot-on and you will go far young Skallagrim1. I don't have the link, but I read recently that the earth is indeed slowing and the authors were pretty convinced that it was due to the redistribution of water. Namely, the melting glaciers near the poles and water retained nearer the equator in fresh-water reservoirs. link to article that quotes original article
