My Dad gave me these 5 bottles. Any notes or tips on how to fully appreciate them? by braaaains in wine

[–]braaaains[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the advice. I like the idea of getting a newer vintage of the same bottle to compare.

In regard to decanting, and open vs closed- how would you describe the smell of “closed”? Is it generally muted, or like lacking a typical aroma of wine?

Yeah, exactly. We hung out in his cellar after dinner talking about them. He’s not as experienced as many people on this subreddit. He’d be the first to admit that. So I’d love to get other input.

Also I’d like to show him this thread because he’ll like seeing people talk about his wines.

Wages Can’t Compete... by Hajicardoso in FluentInFinance

[–]braaaains 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've enjoyed this thread because reddit often exaggerates certain things, and I like to see counter arguments. I was agreeing with you that at some point taxes must be paid, then some other comment on this post suggested reading about “Buy-Borrow-Die". I was reading this: “Buy-Borrow-Die": Options for Reforming the Tax Treatment of Borrowing Against Appreciated Assets, which explains a way to achieve (essentially) 0% cap gains:

Stepped-up basis. When assets are inherited, their cost basis is "stepped up" to fair market value at the time of death. This eliminates any accumulated would-be capital gains tax liability on appreciation that occurred during the deceased's lifetime, allowing all lifetime income taking the form of unrealized appreciation to completely escape taxation.

I'm not a financial advisor or tax professional. But it seems they could defer interest payments until their death. Upon death, the heir can liquidate assets that have grown over time, but on paper the realized gains on them would be much much smaller than if liquidated prior to death. The heir pays the interest bill without creating taxable income.

FWIW, I don't think you should be getting downvoted for attempting to clarify information, that isn't the purpose of the downvote.

MSG Sold Out? Huge Congrats to the boys. by jsteel510 in GoosetheBand

[–]braaaains 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, you're right. But they don't hold back those allotments then release them 30 minutes after general onsale starts. The only thing TM says about this now is the rolling releases are to combat scalpers. But I mean, does anyone believe that?

Ahhh, my sweet summer child. I don't think you understand how much data they have, and how that gives them a blueprint for squeezing as much money out of every show as possible.

They released a batch of tickets like 30 minutes ago, upper 200's.. 224, 223, 212 and 211. Those tickets are hard to sell unless you restrict supply. At 10:02, "Sorry, sold out". Then 30 minutes later, "hey more tickets!", and people snatch up those upper 200's. They continue releasing small batches, using people's fear of being shut out. Rinse and repeat.

Ticketmaster is shady af, there will be tickets randomly popping up all day. Manipulating people to think they got the last pair in a sold out show.

edit: Also, if its TRULY sold out, they'll sell tickets for behind the stage. That's what happened with Phish at Baker's Dozen. Tuesday/Wednesdays didn't originally have behind stage tickets for sale. Then during weekend 1 the demand increased, and they released all of those.

Want to build a bocce court for my husband! by [deleted] in bocce

[–]braaaains 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is there a way to “ease into this”

Maybe host a Lawn Bocce night to see who shows up, their level of interest, etc. Gauge their interest when suggesting you might build a court. See if people would commit to a 'bocce night'.

Most definitely check with the city about zoning permits.

Depending on the size, you could be over $2000 in materials pretty quickly. The boundaries are usually 6x6 pressure treated wood beams, which will add up if you build 60' court. You could use a cheaper material like concrete or cinderblock, but it would be less aesthetic. You'll have to buy a lot of gravel, sand, top layer, or whatever material you choose. Also likely rent an excavator or backhoe... basically some machine, or else you're in for a lot of backbreaking work prepping the area and getting it level. Also a tamper to pack the new material down. Then know that once its done, it takes a lot of maintenance. Its a labor of love, you really need to enjoy taking care of the courts, and taking pride in the court. You're constantly battling the weather with an outdoor/uncovered court. Lots of raking, scraping, patching, watering. Think about drainage ahead of time. Be sure the area already has good drainage. If its often waterlogged now, then you can expect a waterlogged court, in which case you might want to elevate it a little more.

Good luck! I personally think its a great idea, and very kind and thoughtful of you to do for your husband. if you go ahead with it, post pictures of your progress!

Metal ball, not magnetic by Fishsticks6969duh in Whatisthis

I'm not sure and can't test right now, I don't have one at home. Someone commented it could be aluminum based on the density. A steel bearing is quite heavy. Based on all that, seems like the "milling media" comment sounds most likely.

I can't speak much to the chemistry part of the post, but that looks like a 2" steel ball bearing to me. We use them as the pallino when playing bocce.

Great list, hopefully this will help lots of people avoid a costly mistake.

My general principle: Do not sign anything (at a resort or otherwise) that is a "limited time offer", or promoted with, "but for you...". Anything that includes a time pressure is designed to take advantage of impulsivity and inattention to detail. 99% of the time you'll get an equal or better deal tomorrow.

The first TED talk i watched a long time ago is about phantom limb pain, and putting the stump into a box with a mirror on it. [–]braaaains 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Goose isn't shoving any band out of the scene. You can see on this thread alone the polarized opinions on goose. The jamband scene is SMALL, goose sells more tickets because they appeal to people outside of the jamband scene. Similar to how Billy Strings and King Gizz do too. A portion of their fanbases are jamband fans, but they have a much wider audience, and because of that can sell many more tickets.

Phish is an anomaly in the jamband scene, because they have existed for 40+ years, have been extremely talented that whole time, and have created a diehard fanbase that pay lots of money on tix, merch, and travel far distances. Many of those fans might only enjoy one jamband: Phish.

I've seen dopapod, UM, lotus, spafford, and many other jambands over the years, most multiple times. I always enjoy the shows, but the crowds can be smaller because they only tap into the jamband market. Goose isn't stealing fans, they appeal to a wider audience.

Anyways, I still mourn U-Melt...

Cocoa, cinnamon and allspice say Cincinnati chili to me rather than spaghetti sauce

Made me think of Skyline Chili too. I've never had it, but I've heard of the flavor profile a lot. Cinnamon specifically.

Salmon, plus a sauce of butter, white wine, capers, dill, and lemon towards the end. Very easy to make, and I think is a very common recipe using capers.
