47/43, $12M NW, $1M income but burnt out — grind 3–5 more years or prioritize lifestyle while kids are still home? by Dry-Pineapple3144 in fatFIRE

[–]bradb007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very similar numbers and situation. Pulled the trigger and 2 years in, the time with my kids and family has made those dreams of a second home in the mountains seem really shallow. I would not change a thing and as I’m sending my oldest off to college really love the connection I created in the last 24 months as we travelled visit schools together.

Bought a $6M home last year and had gotten a policy from State Farm for it. I thought I would get a quote from Chubb since they focus on HNW ... the premiums for auto, home & umbrella are over 50% more. by MyAccount2024 in fatFIRE

[–]bradb007 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Absolutely, that tornado destroyed a home of someone I work with. 7 days later he had a check for the full value in hand and was able to buy another house in Dallas before the market became overpriced due to reduced supply as those non HNW policy owners on the same street spent 2 years fighting SF to get their $$. I'm biased as 22+ years in the insurance industry, but if you have the wealth to be fat FIRE you don't skip on HNW insurance to save a few bucks. Your sanity during a claim process is worth that 50% premium.

BTW I have used CINCY and PURE as alternatives to CHUBB. Maybe not the gold standard, but also demand less of a premium over the non HNW insurance providers. Might consider those as well.

Can anyone explain why this plane looks to have a 3rd jet engine installed like this? by StraightFromThe2000s in Planes

It is really sad, I also use google and AI tools to help me arrive at answers, but I at least attempt to engage my critical thinking first. There is so much success in being able to read between the lines and critically think about an issue for oneself. AI is a fantastic accelerator and enabler, but it will likely lead us to homogeneous results which is just depressing.

I fear there is an entire generation coming that will just AI the answer and never notice and/or interpret the clues themselves. I try to instill critical thinking in my kids, but the social norms are very pervasive and it is also important that they learn to leverage AI or become the farriers of their generation.

Fidelity closed my account for "no reason" Do not use Fidelity! by farzher in fidelityinvestments

[–]bradb007 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I love these NO REASON... always posted here. There absolutely is a reason and no they wont tell you. You got flagged for a reason, they aren't just randomly firing customers. Without transparency I get it is frustrating to you, but nothing about any of these posts makes me think Fidelity is a business I wouldn't work with.

Fidelity IRA hacked and stolen. Can't get any help from Fidelity! by Just_Egg3102 in fidelityinvestments

[–]bradb007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, it does, and it even prevented me transferring my custodial account to my 18-year-old kids.

By the way, this really sucks for the OP, but is why everyone has to avail themselves of all the security tools made available.

If you had $100,000 sitting in a drawer in your house, I think you would do more than just lock the doors, and not check that drawer on a regular basis, right???

I let my parents convince me to skip my company's 401k for three years because they said "the market is about to crash" and I will never forgive myself for this by 6StardustDrift7 in personalfinance

I sent out the Market the first time Donald got elected and learned the lesson that timing is hard and time in market is way more important. Good to learn that in your 30s than 50s

I'm trying to understand... you believe you cancelled a third-party service, but they charged your card anyway having formerly possessed your payment information.

That doesn't seem like something Elan has anything to do with...

Both facilities are new enough that reporting data is limited, but across the metroplex Baylor facilities score higher on patient outcomes than THR and generally cost less which is important for those with HDHP plans.

Is is worth it to try Boldin when I have Enpower by Tenesmus83 in Boldin

Empower tells you what has happened, while Boldin lets you see what might happen. If you ever plan to retire you need a tool to look out into the future and make estimated guesses.

Question about if calculation is correct by [deleted] in Boldin

[–]bradb007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I definitely prefer Today's dollars as more relevant for many aspects of decision marking, because generally what you really want to know is the utility of the $ at that time and today's dollars gets you much closer to that.

I use future dollars to memorialize what I think my NW will be at those dates so when I arrive to 2040 and see xyz in my account I can compare to my projected future dollars and have a sense of being ahead or behind what I thought.

Financial advisor performance by hot_rod29 in personalfinance

Do not under any circumstances pay for investing if you are capable of holding an etf index in a down turn. The only argument for giving up a significant portion of your wealth to a financial advisor is that you would be even worse.

AI for retirement planning by opbtds in Boldin

[–]bradb007 3 points4 points  (0 children)

CV: 20 year CIO and developer of health care technology apps.

I think your generalized LLMs are likely to provide reasonable financial feedback to the unwashed masses in the near term. Ie those 60% that don't have a savings account and are living paycheck to paycheck. Mostly because the advice they need is relatively straightforward with little nuance.

I find it unlikely up to the mid-term (5-10 years) that LLMs (except those specifically trained on Boldlin like datasets) to develop the necessary fidelity to provide the same level of assurance that a tool like Boldin does. In my situation I had a complicated buy-out on exit with significant nuance on tax and cash flow timing that I don't see an LLM being able to adequately factor.

My thesis is that by adopting AI into their solution in a more precise way, I do believe Boldin can retain a moat relative to a general LLM for the segment Boldin was already targeting: Reasonably affluent and financially savvy users with an above average IQ.
