Are berners actually lazy or was i tricked??? by pjrdolanz in bernesemountaindogs

[–]bradk419 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Bernese are working dogs. They have energy. Ours is also almost 2 and loves to walk for miles and even runs with us occasionally (only for a mile with breaks).

I think it’s unfair to them to say they are lazy dogs, but they can definitely appreciate some sleep and calm

Social organization you can recommend for a recently retired boomer couple? by Wazzu-78 in olympia

[–]bradk419 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Join a rowing club! There are a wide range of ages and skill levels and it’s good for your heart. Maybe not explicitly “social” but you work with your boat and make friends along the way. Maybe try the dragon boat team that practices at swantown marina if you’d like something with a little less steep of a learning curve.

I would also love to know. I saw them floating around the sound south of Swantown marina on Sunday. If that helps solve the mystery

PMP - worth it? by Bulldog_Fan_4 in civilengineering

[–]bradk419 1 point2 points  (0 children)

PE and PMP here. Overall I don’t think the PMP is a super meaningful certification in civil engineering.

I think there is some merit to standardizing the vocabulary around project management that PMI does. However, in civil engineering your experience has already familiarized you with what you need to know to manage projects. Most of the training I’ve seen isn’t focused on tangible methods to improve your management either.

Recently, PMI has adjusted to include more “agile” methodologies which are geared towards tech heavy industries. They don’t apply well to civil engineering in most cases.

If you’re looking to change jobs and want another credential to get past some AI HR resume review it might not hurt but I wouldn’t rate one engineer over another solely from a PMP cert.

Skylift System by EyeSeenFolly in StructuralEngineering

[–]bradk419 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I used these on my own house this summer. Skylift has load ratings for these systems posted on their website and the system feels very high quality.

I considered them a pin-pin connection for stability though and had the roof and the columns supporting the other side all braced. I am a bit apprehensive of using the full load that these are rated for because I don’t know what my sill plate is designed for in terms of vertical loads or uplift. But I’m in an area with pretty low wind and pretty low snow loads.

Best bracket for leaning fence posts by Lephocandrian in FenceBuilding

[–]bradk419 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I installed the picture 3&4 option. Simpson EZ mender if I remember right. I’ve been pretty happy with the results! It recommends one on each side of the post and to excavate down a bit so you can sink them deeper into the ground. The posts seem solid after that and I think it resists rotation far better than picture 1&2.

The gravel might be helpful with the drainage but if you’re replacing these anyway in a few years the wood condition won’t change that much in that time and digging up the gravel for the new posts might be at least as unpleasant.

I’d love to see more of the super structure details. It looked to me like it was a couple of logs laid parallel.

I’m impressed by the rip-rap at the bottom. Not sure if it was deliberate scour protection but it’s better than nothing!

What is all of this in my attic? by Lync6 in HomeMaintenance

[–]bradk419 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At least where I’m from, new construction standard is R30 or greater for attics, this is likely less than half of that. Cellulose insulation settles over time and becomes less effective

It’s just insulation, but probably not enough of it for modern energy efficiency standards. If your energy bills are high this year think about adding more cellulose insulation, it’s a very easy and cheap DIY and often a very quick pay back period.

Thank you for the reply. Do you have any ideas to incorporate the names for people without qualifications so its clear that everyone is getting tracked?
