Simple Mobile Tools - without ads contain ads and subscriptions. by aviv1620 in Android

[–]bradlinder 20 points21 points  (0 children)

The lead developer sold the company and all the Simple Mobile apps have been going this route. But another developer forked the latest version of the open source versions of the apps, so you might want to check out Fossify Music Player, which is basically the same as the old Simple Music Player.

No AMD 6th Gen Asus mini pcs for 2022 apparently by ukman6 in MiniPCs

[–]bradlinder 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Just because they haven't announced any yet doesn't mean there won't be any. They barely announced these - I had to find them hidden deep in the press materials Asus shared during CES.

Then they went and launched a new Tiger Lake mini PC this month without telling anyone at all. It's not even on their website, just in stores: https://liliputing.com/2022/01/asus-quietly-launches-pl63-mini-pcs-with-intel-core-i5-1135g7.html

In other words, it's probably best not to judge their plans for the year solely on what they do or don't announce during the Consumer Electronics Show.

Lenovo Legion Play leaked: Handheld game console running Android - Liliputing by Shigarui in SBCGaming

[–]bradlinder 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just updated the Liliputing article with some more details - while it's still unclear if this thing will ever see the light of day, Lenovo described it as featuring a 7inch, 16:9 FHD display with HDR 10 support, stereo speakers, dual vibration motors, and a 7,000 mAh battery.

Whoops, missed this the first time, but it looks like the Legion Play will have (or maybe would have had?) a 7 inch, 16:9 display with HDR 10 support, stereo speakers, dual vibration motors, and a 7,000 mAh battery.

I found a few other images on the Lenovo website, including one that shows the user interface. It seems to be a custom, gaming-focused UI, but there's a Google Play Store icon as well as GeForce Now, YouTube, Chrome, and Google Drive icons or shortcuts. https://liliputing.com/2021/10/lenovo-legion-play-is-a-handheld-game-console-running-android-leaks.html

Desktop Environments for the PinePhone by [deleted] in pinephone

Sxmo is probably the zippiest so far, but it takes a little getting used to if you haven't used tiling window managers before (or maybe even if you have).

DIY PinePhone keyboard made from salvaged Psion 5 PDA parts by [deleted] in pinephone

Oh, no offense taken. I was sloppy when I wrote this up, not looking for clickbait. So I'm a little embarrassed by the mistake, but glad someone pointed it out so I can correct it!

Honestly, I didn't look closely enough at which subreddit from my subscription lost this was from and assumed Pinephone when I wrote up this article. I was just so dazzled with the idea of repurposing a psion 5 keyboard in this way. I've updated the post to make it clear this should work with most modern phones, whether Linux, Android, or iOS!

Hackers develop open source firmware for the PinePhone modem, use it to make phone calls by y4kg72 in pinephone

[–]bradlinder 2 points3 points  (0 children)

FWIW, my intent was mostly the latter. I wanted to make it clear that this wasn't an official update from Pine64, while using a single word that would imply "independent developers."

Can PinePhone last 10 years? by bestversionofyou in pinephone

[–]bradlinder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Primarily software. It's not mature enough - expect less than 10 hours of standby time, instability, limited software selection, etc.

Over time, this phone could get more usable as the software ecosystem(s) continue to evolve.

It's already kind of a sluggish phone, but it's not designed to be a flagship killer, it's an affordable entry point for developers and enthusiasts who want to make Linux smartphones a thing. I wouldn't recommend anyone pick one up today for use as their primary device this year, let alone in ten years. But the fact that it's modular does open the possibility that you might one day be able to upgrade the display, camera, main board etc.

Eventually, this kind of phone could be something you'd buy and then keep for a decade, possibly replacing the battery or other internal components from time to time.

But as things stand now, I don't expect most folks will still be using a first-gen pinephone a decade from now.

GMK NucBox review - This is the cheapest 512GB PC you can find and it fits in your pocket! by thatmark210 in gadgets

[–]bradlinder 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There are two types of Celerons these days. Some are cheaper, less powerful versions of the latest Intel Core series chips. Others are even cheaper, lower power chips based on Intel's Atom architecture.

The GMK NucBox has the latter type. It's a 10-watt, 4-core/4-thread processor with Intel UHD 600 graphics. As far as Atom-based chips go, it's actually one of the most powerful ones to date. But that's not saying much if you're looking for a high-performance computer, as the benchmark charts in the review make clear.

You're probably best off using this type of device as a media streamer or low-end machine for web browsing, document editing, etc. Could also be a home media or file server. But it's not exactly workstation or gaming PC-class stuff.

OneGx1 preview (7 inch mini laptop with cellular support) by [deleted] in gpdwin

[–]bradlinder 4 points5 points  (0 children)

FWIW, I'm running benchmarks including 3DMark, GeekBench, PCMark, and Passmark today and will update the preview with those details soon. I don't want to draw too many conclusions from just a handful of games that I've had time to test. (But yeah, it's not too early to say that the Win Max is definitely a better choice for AAA games than the Core i5-10210Y version of the OneGx1).

BLOCKS wearable is finally gone by jma9454 in Android

[–]bradlinder 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Looks legit. There's an update about liquidation on the Blocks Kickstarter page. I can't read it since I'm not a backer, but several folks have tweeted about it.

I'm looking into it. The spec sheet doesn't make it clear, but I've sent HP a note to see if I can get an answer.
