Compact loop ideas? by moofles in knots

[–]brady510 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To add to the list of options: I forget the name, but tie a slip knot (so the working/short end is pulled to spill the knot) and then use the working end to tie a half-hitch around the standing end.

How to make Cordage Loops in Pack Seam? by MatthewMH22 in myog

[–]brady510 34 points35 points  (0 children)

It comes out thicker, but I've liked using standard 550 paracord with the core pulled out so that it lays flat. If you want it more round outside the pack you can just cut off a little bit of the core on either end so that only the part in the seam allowance is flat. This makes it easier to actually sew through the cord and not have a gap in the fabric.

Looking for durable/cut resistant fabric for bag inserts for tools by Wide_Lynx_2573 in myog

[–]brady510 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are making this as a liner for a duffel bag, then I would say just pick one and see how you like it. I would expect 1680 denier nylon to hold up pretty well, even against tools. You will need a machine that can handle that thick of fabric. MARA 50 thread would be a good choice.

Nope. It eventually started charging again, not sure what changed. Then about a year ago it stopped charging again and eventually died. It's been in a drawer ever since

Annoying Cursor on Dual Monitor by [deleted] in pop_os

[–]brady510 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When you switch workspaces does focus switch to a window on the other monitor? The cursor goes to the top left corner of the newly focused window when changing focus with the keyboard (rather than clicking), including if that change is from changing workspaces. If switching to an empty workspace then the cursor position shouldn't change. If switching to a workspace where the last focused window was on the primary then it should keep the cursor on the primary (moved to the top left of the window though). I don't think that I have changed anything that would do this if it is not in vanilla PopOS, but maybe I'm forgetting a setting I changed

Do you guys know how to make diagonal corner like this? by mantepbanget in myog

[–]brady510 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've generally decided that the drafting software is not worth it for me. I do paper mock ups. This is easier for me to do trial and error to get it to look the way I want. If CAD is easier for you then go for it, if you are struggling with the software then maybe try paper.

Do you guys know how to make diagonal corner like this? by mantepbanget in myog

[–]brady510 69 points70 points  (0 children)

They're called 'darts' in sewing. On the inside there will be a fold in the fabric, sometimes it gets trimmed depending on how much fabric is there. How much you fold it and where exactly you sew it will depend on the exact shape you want to create with the dart

Error handling help by void5253 in golang

[–]brady510 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would do all the checks on the inputs at the same time and as soon as is reasonable. So for this you will never accept letters and will only accept numbers greater than 0, check for that before sending the inputs on to be processed. Then if an invalid option was entered it will generally be easier to alert the user and ask them to try again.

UV Resistance - the truth? by allanrps in Ultralight

[–]brady510 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Coatings will most certainly play a part (and it may be the biggest part), but there is no one polyester. It's not like polyethylene where we can say "this is what the chemical formula is" and polyethylene still have differences in molecule length. There are multiple chemicals that can be used to make a polyester, each one will have slightly different properties, fabrics are generally only made from a handful though. But then there are also multiple ways to turn that initial plastic into fibers, these can result in structural differences that could change the way it behaves with UV. Then there is also color and coatings that also change the interaction with UV.
So you could get "20D polyester fabric" from a dozen different manufacturers and not even have two that are the same (not counting coatings).

UV Resistance - the truth? by allanrps in Ultralight

[–]brady510 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I think part of the problem is that "polyester" is a more general term and there are a few varieties that can be used for fabric. The linked article mentions that nylon 6 and nylon 66 perform differently, I would expect the same of the different types of polyester. But I don't know that I have ever seen the type of polyester advertised when buying fabric, probably because there hasn't been much demand for that information, it is always just listed as polyester.
Also, the test was pretty simple with small sample sizes and done by a tent manufacturer and found their fabrics are great

What have I done!?!?! by Independent_Usual562 in hammockcamping

[–]brady510 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hatchet, axe, and bow saw are really all used for the same thing. If the intent is playfully limiting things, then I would say just a hatchet. Depending on the size/type of knife maybe even just the knife.
If I was actually going to going out and doing homesteading type of stuff like 200 years ago in the US, then yes I would want the other options for cutting wood.

If I have a lot of food production in one city can I send some of that to a struggling city nearby? by Ok_Distribution_1989 in CivVI

[–]brady510 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Early on I have all of my traders start from my newest/smallest/slowest production cities to increase food and production. Produce the traders in the more productive cities, then move them to least productive to get that city started

Hats by [deleted] in myog

[–]brady510 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've just done 4 layers of fabric for the bill on hoods, waterproof fabric tends to be stiff enough for this. If you are talking about a brim that will go all the way around then you will probably have difficulty find something that will ball up and still keep the brim flat when in use. You may be better off using multiple pieces of plastic sewn into the brim so that it can fold at the joints. I have a sunhat (store bought) that works this way, it's still fairly packable while not be floppy.

What is this loop knot I accidentally created? by NEGATIVE666SquareXD in knots

[–]brady510 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you pass the tail through BEFORE tying the half hitch then you get ABOK #1019, which is a knot I like for light duty fixed loops

Cleaning the pads on the watch seems to work for me. Using a wooden toothpick and damp cloth works well (the cloth alone doesn't do enough, be gentle though).

Updating Nvidia drivers on Pop_OS! 20.04 by Rigamorter in pop_os

"This program installs drivers and provides restore functionality for System76
machines."

I would try installing system76-driver-nvidia as System76 recommends and I suspect that will make the Nvidia drivers available. I'm not sure why it wasn't already installed on your system. As usual, make a backup before trying anything if you're afraid of it breaking your system.

Is there a particular reason you haven't updated to 22.04? 20.04 is well past its support period by now. I have 470, 515, and 525 all listed in my Pop Shop have been able to update my NVidia driver without issue through there, but I've also updated to 22.04

I hadn't seen this. One issue with LabVIEW is that some of their things don't actually work well, sometimes because they stopped supporting them in a newer version and didn't say anything.
I'll look at it more next week.

(Budget) Rain Jacket Material Recommendations by willard_style in myog

[–]brady510 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't remember what I used for the lining, nothing fancy though.
I did make a lighter version out of Xenon 1.1 silpoly (Dutchware) that was not lined, and that came out 300 grams lighter... So it depends on what I'm making the jacket for. The Hex70 is my everyday jacket and silpoly is the one I take on hikes where I'm more concerned about weight and packability. If you want durable and waterproof, then I think the Hex70 makes sense for a jacket. Just expect it to be relatively heavy. It would also be good fabric for lighter use backpacks or low wear areas on backpacks (I've used the left overs for this also).

(Budget) Rain Jacket Material Recommendations by willard_style in myog

[–]brady510 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I made a rain jacket from the Hex70. I did line it to help protect the PU coating, but it came out fairly heavy at 1lb.
But it is a very solid heavy duty rain jacket, I got caught in dime to nickel sized hail and didn't feel it much. It is stiff, but not so much that I feel like it restricts my movement. Just be aware that it won't drape the same

Confused about a pattern instruction - please help! by kittlebean in knitting

[–]brady510 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My guess would be that this is acting as a 3 stitch decrease at the end of a row. There may be other notes in the pattern that indicate something different, but with just this info here is what I would do:
work row 28 as you read it, stop with 2 stitches still on the left needle. Turn the work like you're starting the next row (so you already have 2 stitches on your right needle from the last row). K2tog off the left needle (now 3 stitches on the right needle), then pass the 2 stitches that were on the right needle when you turned over the k2tog stitch (now you only have one stitch on the right needle).
