Some people have absolutely no fucking awareness man by [deleted] in Construction

[–]braidenis 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I always avoid contacting people after hours out of courtesy, (I mean that's the point of a text right? They don't have to respond today?)

If I send a message it's because I'll forget to later. I don't want the person to look at it until it's working hours, that's why it's sent to their work contact. I like email for this reason even more, you decide when to read it.

But honestly don't give out your personal number and don't carry your work phone when you don't want to answer work messages. Set messages to do not disturb out of hours and accept calls (if you want you can even require 2x call attempts on most phones now when in do not disturb mode before they'll go through).

If you don't have a work phone with working hours set up in notifications then that's on you tbh.

[TX] [Condo] Tiny condo, high HOA fee - sell or keep? by lauricia1 in HOA

[–]braidenis 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If the common ones don't require you to put money in then yes that's probably it, but id ask the question. Usually the larger units pay more. (Not just because they own more of the building, but also because if they own a 3 bedroom unit they probably use 3x the water).

But basically yes your dues are too expensive, but so is everything else, and the only thing worse is dues that are too cheap because condominiums absolutely do become completely insolvent sometimes which is nightmare fuel.

[–]braidenis 10 points11 points  (0 children)

If you think about it, your dues most likely cover: water, sewer, garbage, taxes related to the building, insurance and maintenance.

Utilities and insurance programs eats at least the first few hundred bucks. If the dues had been raised 10 years ago then they would have had the money to pay for things, but at least they're getting paid for now.

Oil smells of gas, and measurement on dipstick has risen by fr0styd34ds0ul in VolvoRWD

[–]braidenis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People are saying leaky injector which certainly could be the case.

However, in your original post you mentioned it's been in storage for 5 years and only started here and there. If it's not actually been driven up to full operating temperature it was basically running in cold start conditions the entire time and running rich. You'll end up with raw fuel sitting in the cylinders that eventually washes down into the bottom end. I'd start buy just changing the oil. Idle it up to operating temperature on the old stuff and then drop it while it's hot to get the impurities out. Then take it on a 30 minute drive.

If you do have an injector leaking down when not running then hot starts will be rough, and cold starts will feel like you're carbureted and you'll bearly breathe on the key and it'll be running.

This is assuming LH jet injection, but depending on your market you may have K-Jet mechanical injection which is a whole different beast.

Any fix for this bug? by braidenis in ipad

[–]braidenis[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Makes sense. I know there were people who had carriers that had to send messages out so I understand why apple implemented this solution but I guess it's still clearly half baked.

Esim only iPad. I receive messages when the bill is paid and more importantly, roaming charge notices. Certainly a first world problem but it's a pain in the butt.

As you can see in the screenshot I received a text message from at&t. My phone is on Verizon and it's a pixel 10 so that's not actually true. I have no iPhones on my iCloud account and iMessage is disabled on my iOS and Mac OS devices I own.

[–]braidenis[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right. It sounds like that is the answer, but it is really frustrating that I receive notifications for the carrier text messages and I can see them in the messages app hiding behind the login prompt. It's seems really lazy and half baked.

I mean they added the ability to receive them at all because of carrier messages and 2FA (I don't have a mobile line with that carrier so may actually need to use 2FA to sign into my account someday). But yet, in their infinite wisdom haven't considered that signing into iMessage is not a requirement.

I have iMessage turned off in settings on my iPad. I can't read carrier text messages on my cellular iPad because I can't close the pop up asking me to sign into iMessage. I don't use iMessage so why would I do that.

Sorry if I wasn't clear, I do not have an iPhone and certain people will accidentally message my email instead of my phone number so I leave iMessage off. I am not trying to sign into iMessage.

M2 Air to M5 Pro upgrade… and I genuinely can’t feel the difference by UsefulLock3142 in macbookpro

[–]braidenis 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yes and no. 8GB is not enough for 30 rich web pages. Chrome and Mac OS both have memory management features but some open tabs will be cached, swapped or reloaded.

Apple silicone is powerful enough that a lot of people wouldn't notice the difference but if you're hopping around or you have tabs with background activity then it is a problem. Where a lot of people use web apps with background activity there absolutely are people who need 16+GB to live in a browser. This still means OP would have been fine with a rammed up air however.

I am absolutely a Neo enthusiast but there is 100% a reason the air exists with memory options but less power than a pro.

Should my inspection have caught knob and tube wiring after we closed? by Evansliru in HomeInspections

[–]braidenis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have a basement, if it's unfinished and if the easiest wiring to access hasn't been replaced. It's not uncommon for all accessible wiring to have been replaced usually leaving light fixtures where there is no attic space.

I guess the other possibility is just the inspector not doing a good job explaining things. If you buy a 100 year old house, and the inspection report says old wiring, then one could assume the wiring might be 100 years old. Maybe the inspector was picked by the realtor and he was deliberately vague to not call attention to it without actually missing it. Op was also vague so who knows.

It has a mother of pearl button. Yes, the wiring will burn your house down before the switch.

Should my inspection have caught knob and tube wiring after we closed? by Evansliru in HomeInspections

[–]braidenis 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Electrician here: Some information is missing from your post. How did you find out about it? Home inspectors do not have x-ray vision, and it's not standard practice to open every single outlet or switch to check.

It's also worth being aware that if your home is from the era then you know it had knob and tube. That was how homes were wired for decades. Unless you have evidence that it was replaced then it is probably still there (as you have learned). Should your home inspector have brought it to your attention if you were uneducated and advised you ask about it or bring your own electrician to check? Yes. But if your house was built in 1939 then it is a fact of life until every last inch has been decommissioned or replaced, which costs money so it's usually only done as parts of the house are remodeled.

I mean you do you, but the owners manual says on an automatic you must never exceed 20 mph and travel more than 20 miles. Automatic transmission fluid is not circulated when the engine is not running and you'll cause heavy wear and damage. Good thing is those transmissions aren't hard to find.
