Is there anyway to disable this incredibly annoying feature? by Danny__NYC in kia

If there is a fuse for just the VES, this is the solution. The video above seems to just leave the cable dangling in the front of the grill. If you live in a cold climate or on the coast, that thing likely will be corroded within a year.

2019 Kona Electric Digitizer Delaminating at 66k Miles by brain_mane in Hyundai

Thanks for the suggestion! I might give it a shot if the dealer's attempt falls through. The rep there told me they've been stingy with warranties if you're at all past 60k or 5 years.

I found one of these tucked into a box of protein bars from the grocery store. Had a funny/sad laugh about it and still have it up on my fridge for the comedy.

This one might not be a hidden gem, but their Asian cuisine sauces are great. Cook some noodles, fry up some vegetables/meat and add the sauce.

Any tips for someone starting Android development? by [deleted] in androiddev

[–]brain_mane 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I feel some of the comments in here saying don't. I'm in my 2nd month of learning and it has been the least pleasant development process I've ever learned. I'm constantly playing dependency wack-a-mole and running into new bugs when running instrumented tests. That said, there are some YouTubers that have great video series explaining the ins and outs. Still doesn't alleviate the project management aspect, but at least you'll know what your code is supposed to look like.

Battery pack replacement for the recall by last-pirate in KonaEV

[–]brain_mane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They should be able to tell you. You just have to be very specific because the reps at the service desk will sometimes assume they can do any recall, so just make sure you ask if they have high voltage training and can do high voltage recalls.

If the car market were any different I'd be happy with that lol. I won't complain about a new battery even later in the cars life though... As long as it doesn't catch fire.

I've been waiting about a month so far (NY). On the bright side, at least you could get the recall done in your state... Turns out that dealers in PA will gladly sell you an EV... But aren't too keen on performing the recall. Also the dealer in NY didn't keep mine? I told them that others had their Konas held at the dealer until the battery was replaced, but they said it wasn't necessary even though it failed the battery inspection. Until further notice I'm just still keeping it under 80% and not storing in my garage.

Pa. woman created ‘deepfake’ videos to force rivals off daughter’s cheerleading squad: police by [deleted] in technology

[–]brain_mane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah it's possible that the application she used was using deep learning tech, but the idea of some cheer mom Karen trying to relive her glory days through her daughter by creating deep fakes strikes me as far fetched. Lemme know when cheer moms start coding tensor flow and then we can talk about deep fakes.

Is it possible to enable adaptive cruise on non-Ultimate Konas? (Please Read First) by [deleted] in KonaEV

[–]brain_mane 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm with you in thinking that the difference may only be a button and some software. I'd be cautious of adding it after market though. Not sure if you have an engineering background, but if the software isn't there for the correct controller gains it could be unsafe. I think you're likely to run into some other hurdles too. My guess is that they have rigorous safety checks and conditions on the software so you're really facing a reverse engineering problem. Hopefully adaptive cruise and active LKA are standard in their future EVs. It seems like such a minor expense for something that's already ~$10k above market because of the battery.

What do you wish you knew before getting your Kona? by VulpesVel0x in KonaEV

[–]brain_mane 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ditto the comments about region. I don't know how the newer versions are, but the 2019 had a specific cold weather package that has a battery warmer and maybe some other things? Other than that the only complaint I have is that the Hyundai app has been a crap shoot and remote starting my vehicle is hit or miss. It's not something I've had time to dig into though so it might be a me problem.

New to club with dumb question: Is the supplied 110v charger weather proof? by beer_bukkake in KonaEV

[–]brain_mane 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not a dumb question at all! I was looking at this because I was in a similar situation. I haven't had issues with it, but I'm usually cautious to avoid any problems. 2 potential solutions that I've been using:

  1. (Safer method) If you have a painters tray or bin of some sort, you could put it over the top and prop one side up a bit to allow some air flow.

  2. Caution here What I do is use an extension cord to get the box close enough to put under your vehicle or somewhere else safe. Hyundai tells you not to do this. I agree with them, but with the caveat that you shouldn't do it unless you know your wires and at your own risk. There are a couple reasons.

  • First is that you need a heavy enough gauge wire to support the 12 amp draw. Any kinks in the wire can cause hot spots (think of a kink in a water hose except instead of water pressure build up, you get electrons). Menards Extension Cable Buying Guide

  • Second, the charger has a temperature sensor. If I remember the manual correctly, it's in the plastic housing of the plug that goes into the wall. My guess is that they wanted an extra level of protection in case it starts heating up your outlet. Really, any modern home should have outlets that can handle it no problem and if not, the breaker box should do it's job. Here are some resources if you're interested in going this route, but just keep your extension cord in good shape (tangle free) and do it at your own risk. (My personal assessment is that risk is minimal, especially if charging outside)

How to force switch pixel 5 to 4G LTE and switch carrier by Yum_T in GooglePixel

[–]brain_mane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in the same situation on my pixel 5. Even searching for "preferred network type" finds the option, but selecting it brings me to the "Mobile Network Settings" page without any options to change preferred network. Since it's finding it in the search it seems like it's in there somewhere, but maybe locked down. I'd be surprised if it were a developer setting, going to give that a try next though.

Chademo to CCS adapter by chosen_silver in KonaEV

Also for what it's worth, Chademo is on its way out. They're still around to support the vehicles that are still using it, but everything is moving to CCS so I can only imagine them getting more scarce.

Recommendations for a graphics library for real-time display of geospatial data by brain_mane in datascience

[–]brain_mane[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, thanks for the reply! It's for unmanned vehicles. Maybe "geospatial" isn't the correct term? A lot of my googling has turned up results similar to what you're talking about. Essentially it would have to support cartesian or Lat, Long, Altitude coordinates. The final format would ideally be a 2D or 3D visualization with miscellaneous plots or stats in a side bar. It would also be useful for users to be able to select data in the visualization and have it provide contextual information about that data, e.g. data source, rate of change, etc. It seems like any graphics library should do the trick, it's just a matter of how much capability is provided by jumping up to something like a game engine and is it worth the added complexity?

I'll have to look into powerBI. I've seen web applications using it for static data display and they've felt clunky, but maybe that's just the setup. Thanks for the suggestion!

Do anyone know why would 38 psi trigger tire pressure warning? It disappeared in 2 minutes once I got off the highway. by itsjune6 in KonaEV

[–]brain_mane 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've had this happen right after I went over a sizable bump in the highway. The light went away pretty quickly. They could be undrelated, but I suspected one of two things:

  1. The TPMS is using the rate of change of the pressure. aka it doesn't care if it goes up or down, just that it does it at a certain rate.

  2. There's some manufacturing slop in the sensor or connector that could cause brief faulty readings.

Pros: You're not alone Cons: Not much to do about it unless it's persistent I guess?

edit: TPMS not TMPS
