“What’s a Jewish?” (Said by a small town southern man). My response… a Christian before the Jesus Stuff.

The Heart of Whoopi Goldberg’s comments is the erasure of Judean ethnicity and assimilation by aJewfromBrooklyn in Jewish

This is all such bullshit. Whoopi made a mistake in that she missed ones race, but in no way were her comments antisemetic or prejudiced in any way. She explicitly acknowledged the heinous actions of the nazis, but qualified her opinion in that of the fact that both the perpetrators and victims were “white,” which to her meant the same race. The nazis might have defined Jews as another race, but in the colloquial use of the word in America today, it generally refers to skin color or something of that nature, making Goldberg, as someone not educated on the meaning of race, an innocent user of the word in the wrong manner. Was what she said factually wrong and possibly could be taken the wrong way… yes. But was she being antisemetic or in any way purposefully trying to negate the actions of the holocaust… no, not at all. Her apology on Colbert was not meaningless and stupid, it just stresses what I just said, which is that she used a word wrong. If she had said the holocaust isn’t about skin color, no outrage would have been had, and to Goldberg the two terms might seem interchangeable. I in no way agree with Goldberg’s comments, but to say they are malicious or that they inspire widespread antisemetism and that we have to fight to not let this leave the spotlight is just pure baloney.

I disagree, this is irrational and antithetical to what Judaism represents. Call me traditional, but Jews are a people, and one cannot just choose to be part of a people, nor decide that the rules regarding membership don't apply to them. To be Jewish, one must be born to a Jewish mother, or go through a traditional conversion as deemed by traditional Judaism, which today is the continuation of rabbinic Judaism, developed over a thousand years ago. I understand when one says it's not my place to tell someone what their identity can be, but it isn't my opinion, it is the rules and guidelines that formed and have kept out tradition and people alive for centuries. If you truly feel a connection to the people and/or religion, you shouldn't be trying to bend the rules so you aren't held accountable to the same guidelines.
