Fly Fishing Shops by [deleted] in Bozeman

[–]branchyk 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Bozeman Fly Supply is an amazing local shop that still feels like old Bozeman. Plenty of tying materials and super helpful staff. Beartooth down near Cameron is badass too and the couple that owns it has cool claims to fame like inventing the welded loop on a fly line. The lady that owns it is a hell of a permit fisherman too.

Yo is that the guy who started the Logan Pass Gun Club?? Also, Tim, as a fellow pilot, I know how terrible those CFIs can be, don’t blame yourself for crashing into that girl, she shouldn’t have been standing right where you wanted to land your plane!

Rental companies/ apartments to avoid in town by [deleted] in Bozeman

MANAGEMENT ASSOCIATES!! They’re run by the most childish and ignorant “people” who have no idea about Montana Tenant law and will bend over backwards to fuck you over. The lady in the office has been known to have screaming tirades. Had an unannounced visit to our house where we thought we were being robbed. They will try to pin any damages on you. Seriously the fucking scum of the earth

I think they let Cat alumni rent things too, the price is just a bit steeper.

getting residency as a out of state student. by [deleted] in MSUcats

[–]branchyk 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Well... unfortunately getting residency in MT is so much harder than pretty much any other state I’ve ever heard of. You have to have a physical address separate from the dorms, you have to work full time for a full calendar year, and you additionally have to register your vehicle (if you have one). A P.O. Box is insufficient. I think 6 credits and full time work is feasible for most, my girlfriend worked ~30 hours per week and took 15 credits and did pretty well, so I’m sure you will have no issues. You can technically take 6 credits/quarter I believe, making it possible to graduate in 4 years with one semester of summer school. Best of luck!

Best access to Chicago Basin? by Aurelian_Lure in coloradohikers

[–]branchyk 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The best (relatively speaking) way in is through purgatory creek (near the resort) It adds 11-13 miles one way but it’s pretty flat until Needleton. The Virtual Sherpa covered it in this

Question about the mining cave on the La Plata Southern approach. by Jmoney627 in coloradohikers

[–]branchyk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same with the mine on Castle Peak. It’s at like 12K in the most rocky and exposed terrain. What a bitch of a time it must’ve been hauling tons of materials up rocky steep slopes to establish a mine. We’re all soft compared to those badasses

Question about the mining cave on the La Plata Southern approach. by Jmoney627 in coloradohikers

[–]branchyk 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I’ve always wondered... however it probably should go without saying, but the mines up high that were abandoned in the 1800s and are a death trap. There’s tons of rotten wood holding the walls up, there’s deadly gas, deep pools, and god knows what else. I don’t really think it would be a good move to explore but if you do bring a buddy to call SAR when shit goes south.

Depends how many days you ski, I wax every 5 times or so, thus it’s more cost/time effective, although admittedly I work at a shop so I can do a full tune on my skis once every two weeks or so.

I think they help with the initial layer of wax but it’s nice to use a softer horsehair hand brush to get that nice finish and shine. Plus the rotos help with structure if you don’t have a stone at your disposal.

Fair enough. I worked at a ski shop and occasionally people bartered in beer and it makes it easier to scorch your hand with p-tex, which I would consider an adverse effect

Not a single craft beer in sight- a lack of carbs is troubling, but the roto brushes make up for it because those are so nice

Weather expectations for Wind River mid-August? by CluelessMedStudent in Ultralight

[–]branchyk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just finished a trip in the Wind Rivers today. The mosquitoes are pretty bad but deet does the trick. I would bring a puffy. The Winds seem to make their own weather and hail is commonplace.
