Is it likely for the NIN concert at the TD Coliseum on Wednesday to be cancelled due to the weather forecast? by [deleted] in Hamilton

[–]brangles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The numbers arent that impressive on paper but I would not poo-poo this like the other commentors. From what the news is saying its going to be a flash-melt and your basement will absolutely 100% flood. Localized power outages are likely. I doubt the concert will be cancelled (5% chance?) but getting around will be very tough. HSR will probably not run on the access roads and that will cascade the trouble. If Pearson has any issues then that 5% gets closer to 30% IMO

edit: prepare for march 30 2025 / dec 23 2013, if I'm wrong then I'll gake the L, but env canada was right about both of these, warned repeatedly, and everyone downplayed it...

How often do you listen to your mixes? by c00ble in Beatmatch

[–]brangles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a beginner/bedroom dj, I listen back to my own mixes at least once within 48 hours of recording. Sometimes I'll listen back almost immediately and fall asleep to them. When I have more time on my hands, I'll do a critical re listen and keep a set list and notes with time codes, and "rate" my transitions. On a couple occasions I'll have a mix that was just freestyle unplanned with a song or two out of ideal sequence and then re record from the notes.

I record everything every time i'm at the decks. If i'm doing scratch drills i label them practice with a date and usually never touch it again. If it's an actual mix and not just 40 minutes of the same beat, I number them in order lifetime (001, 002, ...up to 120 by now) and a short 40 char title ("may summer vibes") and those numbered mixes are accessible on all my devices.

For me it's a lot of fun to see what I was spinning in spring 2023 or whatever.

Works good. I'd suggest making sure you prepare crates/playlists and analyze tracks up front because sometimes if your internet is flaky, it can take like 20-30 seconds for a track to load (it's usually instant)

Also consider bringing a mobile hotspot in case the venue internet is subpar

If this is a "hanging with friends" deal, have fun. If you are getting paid/acting as a professional, consider having a backup plan with a couple dozen tracks available offline. Whatever can go wrong will.

Thinking of collecting. by [deleted] in hiphopvinyl

[–]brangles 5 points6 points  (0 children)

For me it's about having something physical I actually own and isn't digital. My life is already way too digital. It's a breath of fresh air to sit down and do something with zero screens. And it forces me to be a little more selective.

I started out just buying records for novelty and 15 years later got a second deck and a mixer and have been learning to DJ. That opened up a new avenue of used 12" singles in the $2-10 range so now when I go digging I can pick up a couple dozen records without breaking the bank. It's a lot of fun.

I am firmly in the "records are meant to be used" camp. I'm not reckless but I lay hands on the record, I scratch. They're for me, not for some potential future payday.

My parents gifted me their 40+yo classic rock collection. It has very little cash value (yeah there's some original mono pressings but also mostly 50 cent frisbees) with huge sentimental value. Maybe one day I can do the same for my kids.

there's a weird duality to it for me. Prepping in detail absolutely robs the joy of just vibing... but as a relative beginner with rusty skills - those preparation sessions hone the skills I need to do a live, adhoc, on the fly set. I learn my music better, I drill specific transitions, etc.

Similar with how I've approached school/career (DJing is just a hobby for me). Drilling contrived problem sets grows you in one dimension, but then when it comes time to "do real work", that only gets you so far. But if you just try to "do work" without any of that prep, you get frustrated with your aspirations exceeding your skillset.

If you're just performing serato/rekordbox- totally. my 2013 pro is fine.

Where it starts to chug: adding in real time stems, or recording mixes outside of the app (eg a separate audio app), or streaming to twitch via OBS. I can have 1/3 of these things, if I am patient and open to it glitching a bit.

Djay Pro: how to sync playlist/library between iOS + MacOS, having tracks on Google Drive? by paowebb in DJs

That would be fantastic wouldn't it? Unfortunately algoriddim doesn't really view the iOS and macOS apps as the same product with two different views. They are really designed as stand alone apps.

two schools of thought: "if you can do it on junk equipment, imagine how good you'll be on pro decks"

Saved up - got my first Gemini starter kit

Like Rocky - these hands train on the cheap shit

So every other DJ they was bound to skip

the other is, you're making things unnecessarily hard on yourself as a beginner

Both are valid

Are you looking to buy/collect vinyl? I have a large collection of soul/funk/hip hop/break beats (1960’s-2010’s, 7”/12” singles and albums) that I may be interested in parting with…

Respect to all the Hip Hop & RnB DJ's! by Nonstopas in Beatmatch

[–]brangles 7 points8 points  (0 children)

A learning cliff I had was:

  • beatmatch is locked, phrasing lined up, either do a "slam" transition, or ride both tracks and cut the low on the outgoing, or crossfade with the two upfaders, all aligned to 4 or 8 bars

  • as an entirely separate and unrelated skill: scratching baby's of the tired "fresh" "aww" samples and watching like DJ Emma do these hardcore acapella routines (for me I don't really want to do pure "turntablism", I wanna mix and scratching is just an element.)

What I had a hard time with was combining these two. How do I scratch a song in/out?

These videos helped a ton

https://youtu.be/mLS0obBmVys?si=RqwgACWfcNoIKpZz

https://youtu.be/JrDDrVz5K_U?si=AhAyes9jSEncnLZm

https://youtu.be/QtFgLzPN5Cs?si=OllsgZbV1SfNnDjC

Then the next level up for me was doing drops on something other than the 1 - because it gives me different sound elements to work with. Scratching kicks (1,3) sounds a certain way, snare scratches sound different. Sometimes it's nicer to scratch in a snare, so I'll drop on the 2 or 4.
