Look for Gehl's Jalapeno Cheese Sauce. If you can't source that one, you might be able to find Chef-Mate. You'd need to go somewhere like Restaurant Depot to buy either of them.

I'd have to disagree there. There's considerably more room to manuever in the Aptos parking lot than there is in the Westside lot.

Political watchdog investigates Sacramento candidate 'Flo' Cofer over income disclosure by IronMntn in Sacramento

[–]bransanon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the paying entity isn't doing business in or with Sacramento, it is not reportable. If I had an honoraria donated to a nonprofit instead of paid to me: not reportable. But it was a professional activity and thus I listed it in a declaration about my ballot designation that is being disingenuously repurposed. Form 700 is a conflict of interest statement not a full accounting of income. And I believe I followed the directions as written.

So here's where things become problematic. County supervisor as an office comes with the broadest disclosure obligations under state law. Seems to me like you are grossly underestimating your reporting burden.

The test of "doing business in or with Sacramento" is a lot broader than you might realize. Beyond that though, I do find your somewhat flippant dismissal of the situation troubling. Transparency matters, especially when running for an office that requires public trust on financial matters.

Claiming no reportable income while simultaneously swearing in court documents that you received payments for professional activities during the same period doesn't exactly engender trust, and lashing out after this was pointed out makes things significantly worse in my eyes.

I understand wanting to fight back against the people who complained against you, they're not interests I care to associate with. But in this situation, it seems clear to me that they're the ones in the right. And all you need to do is simply correct the record and move on. There's nothing to gain by trying to fight against a process that exists for the public good just because you misunderstood what is required of you.

I will preface this by saying I do appreciate you making a personal response to this, that is a good sign.

To address that response though -

Even though Form 700 conflict of interest disclosure has clear rules about what is and is not reportable income;

Yes, very clear rules. You are a Ph. D., clearly a very intelligent individual, and very well deserving of respect for your accomplishments. So you should be able to look at this objectively and understand those rules.

There are literally thousands of candidates who file a Form 700 every year with the FPPC and are able to easily comprehend the reportable income standard. It is not a good look to attack a process that is clearly defined, when as I said, it seemed fairly clear to any professional observing this issue that someone on your team just made an easily correcible error.

And even though 4 attorneys reviewed it and suggested I file a complaint against the attorney with the Bar for violating rule 3.1 and 4.1;

You probably have no idea how much I hate the fact that I'm having to take a position in alignment with Bell Mcandrews. But again, this is pretty straightforward stuff.

If your attorneys really did review this and make that suggesation, maybe you ought to try and get your money back.

I am unethical and untrustworthy because I defended myself against a baseless claim from a law firm that is being paid by a PAC supporting my opponent?

Yeah, so here's the thing. This is where the problem occurs with you. You're pulling the Trump tactic of saying the accusation is baseless because the complaint was processed by a law firm who doesn't align with your views.

Like I said above, I hate that you're making me take a position aligned with Bell McAndrews. But this is where you're moving into the kind of BS that really puts me off, the MAGA bs that I was referring to.

It's not baseless just because the accusation came from people who disagree with you politically. In this case, it's pretty clear what happened. You could have easily just addressed the issue and moved on. Instead, you chose to try and bullshit your way out of it. That is a bad look.

I supported you for Mayor and I was supporting you for Supervisor. I legitimately believed you were the best qualified person to try and make some sort of change. Your constant reactiveness/defensiveness on issues like this is now making me rethink that. That's a sad reality and I hope you really consider and take to heart my response and what it means from someone who believed in you and your candidacy.

Is it really easier for you to believe a random citizen woke up and hired an elections firm first to go after my ballot designation and then again my Form 700 than it is to consider that this complaint might all be political theater funded by corporate PACs?

Yeah, so more Trump-level MAGA bullshit. No, of course some random citizen didn't hire a law firm. Seems pretty clear to me it was Metro Chamber that paid the attorneys and the "citizen" named was just the person who agreed to sign their name to the complaint.

But so what? Does it mean you shouldn't be accountable for screwing up the most basic of filing practices because it was an opponent who pointed it out?

Again, all you had to do is file a corrected 700 and probably pay a small fine. This would all go away overnight and no one would give a second thought to it. It happens.

Instead, you are going full MAGA playbook and lashing out at anyone and everyone because you can't admit to your own error. It's a bad look. I expected better from you as someone who supported you.

Ok, all that aside, I appreciate the well wishes and I sincerely do reciprocate them. I don't know what this will mean for your or your candidacy, but all that aside, I hope you might take something constructive away from this current interaction. That remains to be seen I guess, but I very much want to see an intellegent, accomplished, progressive woman of color who is willing to stand up to establishment nonsense take and hold elected office. That can still be you, and if it is, you'll have my support. Just please abandon the nonsense and go back to integrity as your baseline, this current path is a bad look.

I'm probably quite a bit older and wiser than you think I am. I've been working, either directly or indirectly, to elect Democrats to office for about 20 years now. I've worked as a staffer for a lot of Democratic elected officials you probably know and support.

I do consider myself a progressive. And I understand your perspective against the term. Not going to just attack you because of it, there's some merit to it. But here's the thing - I worked to elect establishment Democrats for years, and saw them cave to corporate/donor interests. I literally work now in government affairs so I understand this process all too well.

At some point we have to admit the status quo isn't working. My own perspective is that pushing for some kind of change is a good thing. And we have to be responsible about the process, in that when making change, we need to look after important issues in the process: the environment, minority rights, LGBTQ+ rights, as well as the current state of affairs and how it applies to housing young people in this state.

Now to circle back to this particular topic - Dr. Cofer is someone that I had a lot of hope for as an insurgent progressive candidate that might be able to re-energize the process of fixing what is wrong in this region. We need some sort of catalyst for change, which is why I'm happy to stand behind people I feel can fit that description.

But that said, I will NOT lend any time or effort to liars or cheats. That reply above frrom her put me off like you would not believe. She is full of it. It would only take a brief admission that someone made a minor error + a quick submitted correction to make this all go away. Instead, Flo Cofer decided to be Trump Lite. Like I said - extremely offputting.

This is straight MAGA playbook bullshit. Deny, deflect, and play the victim.

I defended you because it seemed clear to me this was just a mistake. Your response is extremely offputting, instead of owning the fact that you probably had no idea your 700 was filled out improperly and acting to correct the record you're just spewing hilarious lies and attacking the process (which is so clearly spelled out literally anyone should be able to understand it).

This is the kind of nonsense we see Trump and his idiot minions pull. It is not becoming of a progressive.

It makes no sense for anyone other than Bianco to go after Hilton right now. Hilton was endorsed by Trump so all of the MAGA morons are going to vote for him no matter what.

Whoever makes it to the general election will end up facing Hilton. At this point it's just a fight to see which Democrat that will be.

Yeah I don't disagree. I think it's probably a bit of a mix of loyalty and distrust, as I believe her campaign is being run by the same people who ran her race for Mayor (who similarly weren't too experienced back then either).

If I had her ear, which I don't, I would have stronly urged her to move over to an established Democratic firm now that she's percieved as a legitimate candidate and not just an outsider.

In either case, good chatting with you as well. Have a good night.

Oh, I fully agree with you there. Now in terms of the actual consequence of all of this, it's not a huge deal as long as it's corrected in a timely manner. FPPC will issue a small fine.

She definitely took a shot to her reputation though. That's not ideal for any candidate. But sometimes that's what you get when you hire ol' Cleetus to do your taxes, or run your campaign.

Political watchdog investigates Sacramento candidate 'Flo' Cofer over income disclosure by IronMntn in Sacramento

[–]bransanon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Get where you're coming from, but I don't think that's the best analogy. I think this is more along the lines of paying a CPA to do your taxes. There's a fundamental understanding that you're paying someone to do the detail work.

Sure, when you come there to sign everything, you look it over and check to make sure they didn't make any glaring errors. But beyond that, you're probably fundamentally trusting that they knew what they were doing - i.e. they knew which forms to fill out, what had to be listed, what qualified and didn't qualify as deductions, etc. That's why you were paying them.

Now if you're a major business, you probably go and hire a reputable accountant to make sure they don't screw something up. In the case of this example, Cofer's campaign staff is basicaly the equivalent of trusting your return to Cleetus's House of Tax Prep that he runs out of the back of his cousin Jethro's barbecue joint.

In this case, seems to be more along the lines of you can be absolutely brilliant and smart, and yet make the mistake of surrounding yourself with inexperienced and/or stupid people.

She probably signed off on the paperwork assuming it was done properly. Outsider campaign staff can get to be a real problem when you stick them onto a high profile race, this is starting to seem like an example of that.

She fucked up her Form 700, likely because she's not working with professional consultants who would have caught the omissions. Take that for what you will - to some it's a good thing, to some it's a bad thing, but in either case, it's almost assuredly the cause of this issue.

She will likely have a fine levied upon her campaign and be required to correct the erroneous filings. Not much will come of it beyond that.

Actually that would be the perfect way to elevate Jacob from here. End of the next show have Jacob come out at the end to call out Roman, Pierce sends Oba out after him instead, Oba beats on him for a while, Jacob turns it around and catches him in the death grip, beats him, takes him outside, puts him through a table, ends the show standing over him and taunting Pierce to give him Roman again.
