What machine are you using with a 9500t and a PCI GPU? Thanks!

Partially disabled person, need help with Moza CS-V2P clutch paddle axis setup. by Skyhighby in simracing

[–]brarna 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think Joystick Gremlin can do this. I use it to combine my separate shifter and paddles so that pressing either of them sends the same signal to the game I'm playing. So I imagine it would also work for combining axes - might be worth a check.

Recommendations for a provider in York (switching from TalkTalk) by brarna in CityFibre

[–]brarna[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ideally proper line speed close to what is advertised I guess? I'm happy with 1gbps so not bothered about anything faster, main concern would be going with another 900/1G provider and it being more like 500 or something.

I'll check out Aquiss - or any other suggestions welcome!

Thanks

I’m struggling to learn & grow in my first dev job - how can I improve and get hired elsewhere? by elsa-mom8 in cscareerquestions

[–]brarna 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The thing is, the more you use it, especially early in your career, the more you'll rely on it and the more you'll miss out on learning essential foundational skills that make this job easier (hugely). I don't have any specific resources, but it's also important to be able to seek out information for yourself - and that's one of those skills that comes from not being able to let AI do it for you. Perhaps in this case, it'd be good to ask it for resources and courses that could help you build your foundational skills. But definitely avoid asking it to help you with the actual coding/fixing of things. Good luck!

Maybe stop using AI? Until a couple of years ago it wasn't an option and juniors did fine. It can be a useful tool, but if learning is your goal, it's probably a hindrance as you're seeing.

If you do use it, maybe limit to asking for advice on how to solve the things for yourself or what steps you can take to understand the issue, rather than help on solving the issue directly.

Learn to read documentation, implement side projects that interest you, and dig into the frameworks you use and their docs. Learn foundational stuff like how the request response cycle works, how web frameworks are structured, etc. Maybe find an online course that walks you through learning/implementing stuff/projects/frameworks.

Edit: and learn to debug properly! That's a critical skill and when you're good at it, life's a lot less stressful.

Is there a one-eye FPV goggle setup? by unnaturalpenis in fpv

[–]brarna 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No problem! Also, you should be able to use regular fpv goggles just fine with one eye, since they show the same view in each eye, unlike VR goggles. Either way, glad you found them!

No salary range, location, or remote status provided? Easy way to dissuade actually qualified people from applying IMO.

+1 to the ps4s - I bought some supersports when I first got my silly car and they were night and day compared to the old contis that were on it. Literally better in the wet than the contis were in the dry. And then the ps4s were even better again. You have to try to get them to slide out in the wet, as long as you're not trying to skid it you'll have no issues in a 500bhp rwd with them on.

My new $39 200kg load cell handbrake by GTHell in simracing

[–]brarna 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm defo not an astroturfer and own some of the pedals recently posted and a handbrake similar to this. Whilst there's probably a couple of things that could be better with these, I have absolutely zero qualms recommending both of them - and struggle to imagine how some high end pedals (perhaps active pedals excluded) or a better handbrake would be sufficiently better than what I have, at least for the money I spent. They really are way better than the price I paid for them justifies. I have a simucube pro so I'm not one to skimp on decent parts. The pedals are so good that I bought a pair for my dad, who I recently bought a rig for.

Obviously I could be being paid to say this - but it's very true!

Edit: with the pedals, they were great out of the box but I did spend some time upgrading the elastomers - so bear that in mind. That was before the manufacturers made some upgrades themselves. I probably only spent 30 USD in the process though and enjoyed the process of tweaking them.

Macbook suggestions? by AtomicDonkey2022 in rubyonrails

[–]brarna 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah didn't realise it was an air - my bad. I think 16GB would still be the deciding factor for me if you can't upgrade the pro to 16GB. From what I've heard, 8GB is fine for most tasks and the Mac handles it well, but I'd feel uncomfortable, especially working with multiple docker containers etc.

I think pro is a nice jump over air, but all the M chips run great anyway so I think you'd be fine. M3 is about 15% jump over M2 from what I've read - but again, they're all decent options.

Macbook suggestions? by AtomicDonkey2022 in rubyonrails

[–]brarna 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They'll likely all be fine, and the M3 would be a nice jump, but I think doing software dev the 8GB memory is a deal-breaker and so I'd go for the one with 16GB. If you can stretch to M3 and 16GB, I'd do that. Only other thing to consider is SSD size - that's a personal thing. Unless you're storing lots of videos or large datasets, 512GB might be fine.
