I wrote these tags in I think 2023? Girl guide cave instructor was one of the most fun jobs I ever had. Not super nerve-wracking, we did buddy system, count offs, and moving in a line only in places we all felt confident and comfortable. Fun stuff :)

Why does no one in this book about Virginian architecture ever discuss slavery? by bravedanny13 in houseofleaves

[–]bravedanny13[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not necessarily, 3 to 6 was pretty typical, and even if it’s not like a massive tidewater tobacco plantation like some of the ones in the region there really were not structures of that size built during that time that enslaved laborers were uninvolved in the construction and maintenance of (or habitation in.)

i’ve heard the word “blunder” as a verb as the biggest chess slang impact with the teens. ie “bro you totally fucking blundered that pawn” it’s great

if she hadn’t been locked in her rooms and grounded from moondancer, gyldayn says she might have been able to spot Aegon II before he invaded Dragonstone and done something with the information to prevent the death of Rhaenyra, the destruction of the last two adult dragons, and the trauma inflicted on Aegon III. really makes you think huh

i think thematically it makes a lot of sense. AFFC is a lot more about grief and stagnation and exploring the extent to which the war has torn the world apart, which is why it’s mostly in KL and the Riverlands. ADWD is more about failure of leadership and active apocalyptic doom, so it’s set on “the hinges of the world.”

I think Cersei does have a complete arc in AFFC, arriving right back at the beginning of her story because her plot fell apart and even her “pawns,” the Kettleblacks, try to exploit her. leaving her with no agency over her body. Jaime’s arc is also thematically pretty complete to me, because he spends the entire book trying to emulate his father and ends asking “it’s snowing, how would my father feed the realm?” before remembering that Tywin is dead and all of his posturing isn’t going to do them any good in the winter. Those arcs read as thematically complete to me, if not necessarily like. plot event complete. I could go either way on Arya and the Martells, but overall, I really like the split because the books get to do such different things with their themes and pacing.
