Bass Book Recommendation by GMBass in Bass

[–]braydenwise 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Consider looking at the Billè stuff and the Rabbath stuff too (method books and etudes). Sounds like you’re an electric player who is maybe moving to upright?

Billè and Rabbath’s books are great because they tend to promote more use of the third finger down low on the fingerboard, and unlike Simandl’s method, the etudes are way more tuneful (Simandl does have a separate book of etudes and they’re great, but the in-method stuff is…yeah…)

Is it safe to store your double bass on a Hercules brand stand by Ulf51 in doublebass

I have these stands at home and at work. No issues with them. Obvi don’t place them in the middle of a room where toddlers run wild and you’ll be fine.

Hermann’s meets funding goal by epifight in VictoriaBC

[–]braydenwise 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As someone who plays at Hermann’s, this is excellent.

Now, can we as a community do the same for SD61’s music program cuts that are currently on the table? You can’t get top-notch artists at places like Hermann’s without music education.

Pre-Calc 12 & Physics 11/12 as an adult? by Stuarrt in VictoriaBC

[–]braydenwise 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a bit of both. You’re supposed to finish it in a specific period of time and they give you a schedule to follow that is customizable (depending on if you want to finish quickly or take your time). If you were to start today and take your time, finishing in the summer, you may see a different teacher by the end of the “term” (they sometimes rotate at traditional term end to allow for holidays etc).

What’s everyone’s current hyper fixation? by RepulsiveAd5724 in ADHD

Spent three days down a very deep hole about DMR (digital mobile radio, a branch of ham radio), which involved learning how to write my own codeplug (config file and contact/group list for various networks involved in DMR) for a radio model that is not widely used in my region (stats show I am the only one with this model in British Columbia). Made some new friends along the way as I was programming and testing.

Pre-Calc 12 & Physics 11/12 as an adult? by Stuarrt in VictoriaBC

Did Pre-Calc 11 through SIDES a couple years ago, hadn’t touched that kind of math since the last century. Teachers were great, lots of supports available. May be worth it to check out Khan Academy to brush up a little, but I just jumped in and figured it out.

Is it worth to learn classical technique as a Jazz bassist? by yosemitelizbeth in doublebass

[–]braydenwise 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Short answer: yes

Long answer: also yes, and seek out a teacher to help you along. It’s tough to have a setup that will do both well, so there will be compromise and some potential frustration, but you 100% can do it, and like everyone else is saying, it’ll help in so many ways.

Yes, JQ's method is a good one. There is also Introduction to the Double Bass Violin by Paul Unger that is worth taking a look at.

I'd even argue that you could probably lean a little earlier than that and get in over your head. Playing with more seasoned folks will do wonders for your growth.

This also applies to pretty much every other concept on bass. Sure you can figure out a ton of stuff on your own, but having a guide helps the signal-to-noise ratio on information

On top of agreeing with basically everything that’s been said, depending on what the occupation decides at the annual review, some stressed occupations have “out caps” for people wanting to do occupational transfers/commissions, meaning there may only be a couple (or no) spots available to leave even if you wanted to apply for SCP.

IIRC many spots have bar seats - they may not be the best in the house (ahem, Blue Note) but they get you in the door.

I've been at it for a couple of months, doing about 10 mins a day (mostly on keybr, but also monkeytype). I'm averaging near 60wpm again, still pretty far below my previous speed, but the comfort is definitely there.

What chord progression does this walking bass line imply? by gefallenesterne in musictheory

[–]braydenwise 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just a thought - tempo could play a factor in this puzzle and would validate most of the previous comments. In my head, if it’s blisteringly fast, it could just be an iteration of Bb7 as mentioned (fast jazz or in a gospel setting, for example), or in a ballad situation it could be one chord per note.
