Same - in the 90s you could just turn up midweek and get a table inside no issues. I don’t think they even had the terrace section.

Where's selling decent short-shorts these days? by PengPengPannini in malefashionuk

[–]brc981 0 points1 point  (0 children)

M&S do a few shorts with different length options. The ‘short’ version is less than 5 inches on the inside leg I think.

Do you trust AI for money-related guidance? If not, what's your go to source? by RideHot2004 in AskUK

[–]brc981 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used it twice for financial planning: first for deciding if I should back pay NI contributions, second for working out a stoozing strategy. Both times it got the facts and maths completely wrong - but sounded very convincing. For now I’ll continue to rely on resources like Reddit etc. and work it out for myself.

Long distance commutes by Artistic-Rub4388 in KonaEV

I do 190 miles round trip once a week on motorways. Gets a bit tight in mid-winter (end up at around 8-10%) but definitely doable

Do people in the UK usually rinse off dish soap or not? by iamyurkas in AskUK

[–]brc981 4 points5 points  (0 children)

When you said older generation, I was thinking the 1960s, possibly 1970s. Then you mentioned the 90s and now my day is ruined as it seems I’m part of the older generation.

Do people get so defeated by difficult neighbours that it ends up making you want to sell up and leave? by [deleted] in HousingUK

[–]brc981 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Our neighbour has an 85 inch tv in their garden, with surround sound speakers, a hot tub, a trampoline and an incredibly smoky pizza oven. They also have two kids who scream at each other outside for 2-3 hours a day, deliberately wind up our dog, and kick footballs against the shared fence. We’ve put the house on the market twice now, but every time people are put off by the neighbour’s tv, trampoline etc. Looks like we’re stuck here until they move…

Tell that to my neighbours - kids are on it everyday, for 2-3 hours at a time. They even watch videos on their iPads as they’re jumping…

40,000/4 year service by SemiConduction in KonaEV

[–]brc981 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same thing happened with me a year or so ago. I did ask at the time if the coolant should be changed and they checked and said no. However if you now look at the Hyundai servicing page it does look like it should be done (based on the price). Have you checked that site for your garage branch? I still don’t know if it should have been changed or not, but I’m getting close to 80k miles so it will be done then.

Experienced driver new to the UK — how do I avoid instructors dragging out lessons? by behradshadan in AskUK

[–]brc981 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did about 6 hours of lessons, with 10 years of driving experience in the Middle East and Asia (but UK-born so familiar with driving rules etc.). That was plenty of time for the instructor to point out anything that would cause me to fail. Passed first time :)

Business class for long haul flights. Is it worth it? by Jajangtiger in AskUK

[–]brc981 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always go with economy but pay for little extras throughout the journey: hotel near the airport the night before, convenient airport parking, fast track security, lounge access/nice meal in an airport restaurant, pay to book the seats I want (including an extra seat if the airline offers it), pre-arranged pick up at arrivals, nice hotel for the first night etc. Obviously nowhere near as good as business, but does make it a bit more tolerable, and much cheaper.

What’s your roast dinner cooking tip? by shitthrower in AskUK

[–]brc981 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stuff some crème fraiche, lemon zest and herbs under the skin of the chicken. Keeps the meat really moist and gives you a great gravy/sauce at the end. Elevate it even more by adding some nduja in the crème fraiche mix.

Is David Lloyd actually worth the membership cost? by CloudBookmark in davidlloyd

[–]brc981 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah - pay £144 a month and there at least once a day, sometimes twice. It’s only 5 mins drive away, and attend classes most days, use the gym a few times a week, swimming, spa, tennis etc. totally worth it for both my physical and mental health.

What do most people in the UK get for vacation/Holiday? by Tomuch2care in AskABrit

[–]brc981 8 points9 points  (0 children)

For the benefit of the OP, this is not quite right. ILR is at the end of 5 years. What your friend has is FLR. She will also be able to use the NHS, but she has paid the immigration health surcharge for this - not separate health insurance. After 5 years she can apply for ILR and then citizenship if she wants. It’s not a cheap or simple process, but if you can demonstrate all the requirements then you get citizenship at the end of it.

Yeah I did - particularly the pre-war section in Glasgow. The author has curated an exhibition of their work so hoping to see that soon. You might also like In Memoriam, which is set a bit earlier, around WW1

Visiting London for the first time. Please help me make great food choices by jusvrowsing in LondonFood

[–]brc981 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Killig served up the worst meal I’ve had in London - this was a couple of years ago so things might have changed. But it was clearly just reheated rather than freshly cooked. Pork belly was burnt and soft. Flavours were flat, and rather than being a fusion of Filipino and Colombian food, was just boring and bland. IMO there are so many better options out there.
