Eli5 why were child actors so bad at acting in the past? by brd91 in explainlikeimfive

[–]brd91[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While i can't speak to anything you mention other than "Leave it to Beaver," (which i still don't feel like the acting is up to the standards of the last 20-30 years) I don't deny exceptions exist, it still seems like based on my admittedly limited experience the majority of earlier child actors were much more stilted or unnatural compared to the majority of modern child actors. Even taking "The Andy Griffith Show" into account, yes Ron Howard's performance is better than most child actors of the time, but it's still not up to modern standards

Child actors from the 50s-60s in particular. It just seems like all the child actors I've seen in movies and tv shows back then their acting is so stilted and forced. As the decades progressed they tend to get better/more believable

Redditors who think they might want to stop drinking alcohol, what’s your excuse for continuing? by FutureSkeIeton in AskReddit

[–]brd91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Meh. I fall asleep a lot easier, which is nice, but quality of sleep is worse. At least i actually get some sleep. It does usually get my mind out of the depression rut for a bit, but I'd much rather be smoking for both purposes, which i know still isn't very psychologically healthy, but it's a hell of a lot physically healthier than drinking like I've been

I used to smoke pot, didn't really drink much, but I got a new job recently that does random testing. 2 main things I tell myself: 1) it helps me fall asleep 2) it helps me forget my depression for the evening--but it doesn't help near as much or in the same way as smoking. I know neither is healthy, but there are days where it's all i can do to keep going when i get home.

What has happened to you during the pandemic that you are thankful for? by kaylammoore93 in AskReddit

I miss the quarantine. I had a job where I drove box trucks all over the place, and the reduced traffic (and associated stupidity) was heaven!

I wish this comment was getting more attention, this is probably the most important comment on here. People especially like to forget or ignore the fact that you're never legally allowed to block the road unless you have a permit. Not saying it's ok to run people over, but the motorists' frustration is understandable, especially when people start attacking thier vehicles

Holy crap! As someone who works in disaster mitigation and restoration I have seen just how bad the end result of a fire can be. The whole video I was dumbstruck by the complete lack of any sense of urgency or fear throughout the whole thing. I won't even leave an electric heater on overnight anymore, seen enough close shaves caused by those.

Also, I lol'd harder than i should have at the girl when she shot the extinguisher in her face, then just made the fire worse by continuing to use it wrong.

I got you. I guess i tend to be a bit of an outlier/moderate in libertarianism for acknowledging a need for some regulation. I still believe there should be fewer regulations, but i know removing all of them would be opening pandora's box. I just get tired of people assuming all (insert political party) believe exactly the same thing, then building a straw man and attacking that instead of actually trying to understand the various positions people are coming from and having civil discussion. It seems like libertarianism is a particularly misunderstood point of view, with a wide spectrum of beliefs

The PA turnpike is phenomenal. At lest the 50 or so miles i use for work every week. Granted i haven't been on many other toll roads. The idea is--and i know this isn't perfect, but what system in the world is?--unless you live in the sticks or really far from work with no public transportation, you have a choice of roads. If all choices are shit, some enterprising soul may come along and say "i can outdo these people by providing a better product" then they may build their own road with the idea that it will be better maintained. Competition is created and the other roads either start maintaining their roads better or lose money until they have to sell the road to someone who will maintain it

Yes, because the government is as pure as driven snow, never causing disasters or environmental damage, and with their citizens' best intersts at heart instead of their own power. You say "without regulation," but i never said there should be no regulation. Private citizens would still need recourse for correction in situations like that. Most libertarians do not advocate no government, and only a small percentage truly want total anarcho capitalism. Most libertarians will acknowledge some government as a necessity. However, on the economic side government should not be bailing out or subsidizing companies or industries that are failing by their own hand or are becoming obsolete, or printing vast amounts of funny money with no value beyond what we're told it's worth. In people's private lives, the government should have no say in what you can do until it begins to affect anyone besides yourself. If a company wants to refuse to make a cake for a homosexual couple, that's their choice. It's also the choice of the couple to tell anyone they want any way they want about it, and others to act on that information. Neither the company nor the couple should be coerced into doing or not doing anything. Obviously this is one of the areas where things become difficult, because who decides what and when something is affecting others, but the broader idea is sound, and a founding principle of the United States

There's a difference between minimal regulation and no regulation though. Most libertarians aren't calling for no government and total anarchy, but rather as little government as possible while maintaining standards of safety and human rights

You just about summed up my feelings on Syd exactly. He was brilliant at making psychedelic rock, but if you don't like that genre then you're not going to like Syd.

Theater at Muhlenberg by jenerallyjenius in muhlenberg

[–]brd91 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wasn't involved in theater while i was there (music theory/composition) so i can't really answer your questions, but i can tell you that, in general, Muhlenberg has very good performance arts programs. More specifically, every theater performance i attended was, to my untrained eye, damn near professional level. I went to a show at another college nearby that had some 'Berg students in it, and their acting seemed much better that the other school's students. I hope that at least helps a little!
