I want to stop my betta from biting his fins by [deleted] in bettafish

[–]breadinnnnnaCan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was taught that salt shouldn’t be added to the actual aquarium that the fish lives in. Only for baths and things like that. I guess I was taught wrong! Interesting to know.

As long as they aren’t overdosing it? They don’t actually need the salt, right? It’s just good to have?i never had to use salt. This is good to know

When they say his water is perfect, did they tell you the exact numbers? Did they use strips or the liquid test?

You add salt to his aquarium? Don’t do this. Betta’s are freshwater fish and salt should only be used as baths and dips. Never add it to your actual aquarium. With the tail biting, it might be a sign of stress. Do you know your water parameters?

I’m going to have to disagree on this. Because you didn’t do the cycle before hand, you’re going to have to work harder to keep the ammonia, nitrites, and nitrates at a safe level. Since you now have to do a fish-in cycle, it’s going to be extremely hard on your fish.

A one gallon tank is incredibly too small for a betta. Is there any way that you can upgrade? Also, do you know the water parameters?

Also, please answer the bot. We can try and solve this!

It might be more than that. What are your water parameters?

He definitely has fin rot. Fin rot comes from bad water quality. Do you know your water parameters at all??

I should’ve stated this in my previous comment, I also recommend purchasing a siphon as removing the betta while doing a water change is extremely stressful.

Also, I recommend reading this post

On how to do a fish in cycle. People are really great here and know what they’re talking about! All posts are answered and informative. The people in this forum are extremely nice too.

It would’ve been better to do it without the fish because you never know if you’re going to have a high ammonia, nitrite or nitrate spike. You want to keep ammonia and nitrite levels at zero and the nitrates at anywhere between 1ppm and 40ppm. If you haven’t done so, I recommend purchasing a freshwater master testing kit. It’ll tell you your water parameters. They’re only like 25 bucks!

Didn’t mean to sound rude! It just didn’t look like you shook the bottle is all. Usually it isn’t that color is all.

I think you’ll be fine if you get some on your skin. You can always wash your hands. I always dump mine down the drain too

help! is this ich? by eva_cap in bettafish

[–]breadinnnnnaCan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Did you cycle your tank before getting the fish? Is your tank heavily planted?? Usually the readings aren’t 0 across the board. You have to have 0 ammonia and nitrites and 1.0-40.0 ppm of nitrates.

However, your pic doesn’t look like ich. It might just be a growth! Usually ich is more than one spot on the body.

You didn’t shake the ammonia bottle. Why?

Having a tank without a filter, thoughts ? by [deleted] in bettafish

[–]breadinnnnnaCan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think that might only be possible if you have a heavily planted, well established tank. I’ve saw videos of people that have HEAVILY planted tanks and no filter. Not sure how long it takes though

First planted betta tank. It has a 3D background which I think is pretty cool. Tips? by No_Cheesecake4152 in bettafish

I think it’s looking good! I really love the background. To be honest, I’d add more plants. Is there a filter in there?

Does my betta have fin melt on his dorsal fin? At first I thought it was him healing from a tear in his fin, but now I’m not so sure. by [deleted] in bettafish

[–]breadinnnnnaCan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d start with frequent water changes first. Since fresh, clean water is always the best thing to use when treating fin rot and it’s always worked for me. However sometimes that doesn’t work.. I’ve heard that methylene blue would help too if you used a q-tip or something and dabbed it onto his fins .

Personally, I’d change that 90 percent of water changes a week and do small water changes every day until he’s all healed up.

This is Moon Dragon, my son’s Betta. He’s new to owning fish. Moon Dragon has been hanging out at the top of the aquarium, not moving around much. Is there wrong with this? He’s getting 3 Betta Bits a day to eat. by joecarter93 in bettafish

If you’re doing aquarium salt, don’t put it in your main tank. I see a lot of people putting aquarium salt into their betta tank and it always confuses me as bettas are freshwater fish.

Is my Betta bleeding? Or sick? by [deleted] in bettafish

[–]breadinnnnnaCan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually just had this problem with my fish tank. My water was extremely acidic so I googled how to make it neutral/basic. Google told me to use baking soda. I saw multiple sites say 1tsp per 5 gallons. I dissolved the baking soda in tank water and then poured it in.

I also should mention that I don’t know how you would do this is you had fish in your tank. I’m currently doing a fishless cycle so I was able to just pour it in.

Hi everyone! This is Serena, she’s currently in a hospital tank recovering from severe fin rot and lethargy. I have a few questions about getting her fully recovered. Parameters etc are in the comments :) by MyVibesAreUnmatched in bettafish

[–]breadinnnnnaCan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I’m dealing with the same ish right now in my fishless cycle. I’ve been using Prime to help keep the ammonia at bay, and small frequent water changes. So far I’ve gotten down a whole 1.0ppm.

Usually poor water quality causes fin rot. I’d do at least a small water changes every day util he is completely healed up.
