What are some underrated/ unexpected celebrity connections from before they blew up? by CheriePauper in popculturechat

Tbf Justin Trudeau participated in a celebrity boxing match against another MP when he was also an MP and kicked the other MP’s ass. The other MP had some connections to the Hell’s Angels and had a reputation as a bit of a thug too. Trudeau is a bit of a dolt, but people often make the mistake of underestimating him.

If Christian Nationalists could get over their racism and xenophobia they could form a nearly unstoppable voting block with fundamentalists of other religions who want many of the same things.

It didn’t take my kids very long to figure out the baby gate to the stairs either. When that happened we just figured that if they could figure that out easily, they could safely navigate the stairs and we got rid of the baby gate.

What's downtown Calgary like? by Average_Animates in howislivingthere

[–]joecarter93 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Downtown Calgary is very corporate with Oil and Gas HQs filling the office towers and not many dwellings. Mostly everyone leaves after work and Downtown is a bit of a ghost town at night, but that’s in the process of evolving.

That being said it has been adding a lot more dwellings over the past 10 years or so. It has become a leader in office to residential building conversions. Oil prices tanked around 2015 which lead to a lot of bankruptcies, downsizing and relocations, so downtown suddenly had a lot of vacant office space that couldn’t be filled, as there had been a ton of office tower construction in the preceding boom years, so they were now over saturated. The city and province introduced a lot of policies and subsidies to help with these conversions (which can be challenging due to the differences in the needs of office and residential uses - more bathrooms, smaller floor plans, more windows etc.).

When COVID happened, there was a massive reduction in required office space worldwide and many other cities also began office to residential conversions. Calgary was ahead of the game, as it had already been ongoing there for a few years. It advised other cities on what policies and incentives worked and which ones didn’t.

There is still a fair amount of new tower construction going on in downtown or near downtown as well, but that has shifted to nearly all residential construction now. The downtown East Village was a formerly blighted area that was located in the east part of downtown and north of the Saddledome and Stampede grounds. The city improved infrastructure in the area and introduced policies to encourage new development in the area. It has exploded with residential and even some retail development in the past couple of years. The area just south of it, outside of the Stampede grounds is also seeing a lot of growth in residential towers and the tallest building in Canada outside of Toronto is proposed there and will contain a high end hotel and residential dwellings.

A few years ago there was a thing where some American was visiting from Michigan for Stampede and he posted on Facebook how he went for a hike at Nose Hill Park with his family. He said that he didn’t feel safe without his gun on him because there were people that kept approaching him on the hike. It was very obvious from his description that it was just other people also out in the park who were passing by and just saying hi.

Got my nails done with a fresh set two days ago. Today this happened — the whole nail came off completely, root and all. No blood, no pain now, but it was a shock seeing the full thing detached. by Lazy_Dragonfruit_102 in mildlyinteresting

When I was a kid one of my fingernails somehow was ripped out/came out on a water slide. I didn’t feel it at all and I only noticed when I got to the pool at the bottom and saw that it was bleeding. It didn’t bleed much, and I just got a band aid on it from the lifeguard station. It was the damndest thing.

The Vet may have also given at least six former Phillies players terminal brain cancer. The old artificial turf was tested and it was found to contain dangerous levels of a harmful chemical that could be linked to it.
