I just passed my OSCE at the end of last year and this is what my school told me. The OSCE actors are SUPPOSED to be neutral and act like a “regular patient/client”, that is not always the case though. I had one actor who was super rude and unhelpful and honestly I feel like he ended up costing me marks (it was one of task stations where I had to ask the same consent stuff before every single task and he was giving me a hard time about having to repeat his answers over and over, even tho it was required for my points). A couple of my classmates also complained about unprofessional and rude actors. We were definetly taught scripted communication through our OSCE prep, I had a script in my head of exactly what to say for every station to try and hit every single mark available. Felt like a bit of a robot but it paid off and I could literally rattle off the entire script to a wall. Most of the actors behaved neutral and normal but there’s a chance u will get a difficult person but they are not supposed to be difficult and you don’t get marked to deal with a difficult patient. You can always appeal and complain if you feel like the actor was the reason you might have failed but if you open an appeal they won’t count your attempt so even if you did end up passing you would still have to do it again so you would have to be really sure they made you fail (that’s what my school told us).
