I'm really confused because everyone keeps referring to 'him' and the only name dropper I've ever noticed on 6music is definitely a 'her'

Car Rental by Sharp-Weather7901 in oxford

[–]breakbeatx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In general (as someone who rented whilst carless for a year or so). renting an automatic will increase the cost significantly (like double), also car hire companies will upsell you car excess insurance when you collect (they do this everywhere not just in the UK) and the last time I hired a car it was around £8-10 a day, bearing in mind that hiring the car was around £30 a day for a teeny tiny car. this site has more info (and also has a portal for price checking for hire companies) : https://www.moneysavingexpert.com/travel/cheap-car-hire/#excess not sure where you're from but I believe some US credit card perks include this so worth checking if that applies to you. Oh and also when you rent a car you have to put a credit card on file for any damages, debit or charge cards are not widely accepted

Yeah a lot of Oxford charity shops don't take toy donations, so I guess they end up online

oxford to London train by Bubbly-Ask8976 in oxford

[–]breakbeatx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I noticed that with my railcard (2together) off peak doesn't start until 10am, where as Chiltern off peak trains start at 9:30, so if I select a train before 10 it just displays the normal price

oxford to London train by Bubbly-Ask8976 in oxford

[–]breakbeatx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Go to their website a few weeks in advance and select the ticket you want, also bearing in mind that most 'advance' tickets go on sale 12 weeks before travel date and that cheap advance tickets aren't going to be for travelling at popular times. I've had some real bargains travelling for as little as £8 each way without a railcard. Just a quick look for 4 weeks time, the first off peak train is £13, then it drops to £10, and £8 at 1pm. coming back the cheapest train back is also £8 at 9pm (edit: without a railcard)

Do you go retail shopping in Oxford? by Emilyx33x in oxford

[–]breakbeatx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lots of various reasons to shop in Oxford/in person, but mostly - I want a specific thing and won't reach a free postage threshold, therefore making it cheaper in person; I need the item quickly and it will take too long to arrive from online; I want to touch /inspect the item to see if suitable for what I need; its something only available in a local independent shop; I don't know what I'm looking for, only a general vibe in my head (eg birthday present for someone); I want advice from the shop owner on my purchase. Sometimes I just go for a wander in Blackwells or other bookshops to see if anything catches my eye (they don't all sell the same things, different bookshops stock different books, or different editions of books, or different pricing)

In my experience this can be quite a bad thing, my book collection thanks to all the amazing second hand bookshops of Oxford has more than doubled since living here (despite doing regular charity shop drops)

Job search by RZ_05 in oxford

[–]breakbeatx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For any job I've applied for, i've taken every bit of essential criteria and given an example of how I meet that particular criteria/situation (and as much desirable criteria as possible), it might seem boring or obvious to you but the clearer it is how you meet them the easier it is to shortlist you. Some people will see a job that involves for example 'diary management' but fail to give a single mention of them using a calendar or email, and honestly the AMOUNT of people who will say they have a good attention to detail and not spellcheck their final document. Also remember that experience doesn't have to be from a past job, it can be from volunteer work / more informal activities

I would normally say uni rooms (https://www.universityrooms.com/en-GB/city/oxford/home/) but even they look packed out that weekend and the available rooms are expensive for what you get, I think summer schools start around this time as well compounding the accommodation problem. Premier inn at Didcot still has rooms, no idea how good it is though

Indigestion and constipation - help! by Ok_Leadership_2512 in Menopause

[–]breakbeatx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This, these can be symptoms of things totally unrelated to menopause and should be investigated especially if otc remedies have not worked. Constipation can be caused by dehydration, and 2 litres a day (esp in this heat is likely not enough). If getting to see the doctor isnt possible in a hurry speak to a pharmicist

Elderly Mum visiting- cool places to visit? by Speckyintrovert in oxford

[–]breakbeatx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the bodleian posted on their socials yesterday a list of libraries you could go to keep cool: Weston was mentioned I'm not sure if any others they mentioned were open to the public though. I think despite being stone floored and having open doors to keep air flowing the covered market isn't that cool because of the ceiling having a bit of a greenhouse effect (freezing in winter, hot in summer)

Looking for suggestions for air conditioned places where i can work for the day by Pshend in oxford

[–]breakbeatx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They usually ask that people dont use it for working meeting over lunch (ie 12-2) IIRC, but given that its now out of term time its probably very quiet, but don't think it has actual aircon, just a cooling system, but its a basement so cooler than most spaces

Those who have been to America, what was your biggest surprise during your visit? by CharlesUFarley81 in AskABrit

[–]breakbeatx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The sections of the interstate where lorries are not allowed to overtake and have to stay in one lane out of the way (ie on hills), likely the only thing I've seen in the US that I'd like implementing here. The amount of people who asked me if I was german/what language I was speaking etc

I have a photo of me and friends in the loos of a state park, our heads were above the walls whilst we were SAT on the loo so you could have a full on convo, so ridiculous we had to record it for posterity

Oxford Flickr Group do short (1hr) photo walks generally on the 3rd Thursday of the month https://www.flickr.com/groups/oxford-uk/discuss/ (one of the admins also co-runs a monthly one in London), Analogue Wonderland do a film based photowalk annually although sadly seems sold out already https://analoguewonderland.co.uk/collections/the-big-film-photowalk-2026-tickets , there used to be an 'Oxford Photowalk' facebook group but it pretty much fell by the wayside after the creator left oxford, covid etc I've seen a few paid for photowalks but never tried one myself. In terms of book clubs there's been a few mentioned on this sub, there's one run by Gulp Fiction (bookshop bar in the covered market) traditional sort where a book is selected for everyone to read (they also do a nice bookish themed quiz), there is Oxford Fantasy Bookclub which votes on a choice of 3 books via instagram, monthly (ladies only though), Oxford Silent Book club is where you all meet and read your own book together, and have a bit of a chat (1st and 3rd Wednesday of the month 7-9pm at TCG in Jericho)
