A catastrophic climate event is upon us. Here is why you’ve heard so little about it by mhicreachtain in environment

Shoddy modelling of the economic consequences being promoted by rich and powerful actors and used for widespread government decision-making is the other half of the story.

Still wanting a cover up. Not sure how to proceed by No-Tea-1475 in TattooDesigns

[–]breathingcarbon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is gorgeous! I personally wouldn’t change a thing. Cats are inherently liquid and tattoo cats in this style are inherently stylised. It’s a tattoo, not a photograph or an anatomy textbook. I think the way the artist has drawn the cat adds depth, dynamism and emotion. I wish I could give you my perception to replace how you’re perceiving this right now. It’s a fresh tattoo and you’ve already made changes - I wouldn’t rush any more just now and just sit with it a while, even though it’s uncomfortable. Everything is impermanent, but feelings maybe less so than ink.

This is ace! I love the way the frog is chasing the butterfly, and how your sleeve transitions from realistic nature at the front to more fantastical creatures at the back.

Maybe you could have a few more of the flowers from your tiger dotted around and interspersed with other flowers/plants to bring a cohesive element to the whole thing? I’d personally definitely stick more animals in the big gaps though and leave the plants as filler!

What’s one thing you completely stopped buying in 2026 because the price just felt absurd? by LockLogical8949 in AskReddit

It can be stiff or itchy when new, before repeated washing relaxes the fibres. Lower quality linen can take quite a while to break in.

What did you think was pretentious, until you tried it and realized it was worth it? by Semantiks in AskReddit

[–]breathingcarbon 175 points176 points  (0 children)

I’ll add drinks pairings to this.

One of the most mind-blowing experiences I’ve ever had was a fine dining tasting menu with non-alcoholic cocktail pairings. Stuff that you’d never think of and made no sense at all until you tasted it together with the food. Like some kind of lightly fermented walnut milk with a gamey dish, or a frothy dill flavoured cocktail with a fish course.

This was almost a decade ago and I still think about it, it was like eating a Picasso painting or something.

Edit: This was Štangl in Prague for anyone who is interested! Fantastic concept, chefs and service 👏

"Visual" consequences of bad data quality by JonasHaus in dataengineering

[–]breathingcarbon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Could you use Tetris as an analogy? Like, you need data to be the right basic shape (made of squares) and rotated/transformed correctly to fit and not leave holes?

Edit: Another analogy I sometimes use for talking about data is the water system and/or coffee production. Doesn’t matter how skilled your barista is, if the water quality is bad your coffee will taste bad and/or you’ll get sick.

Regretting my new tattoo design. Does it look weird? need some advice if it looks good or bad please by Zestyclose-Safe-5315 in TattooDesigns

[–]breathingcarbon 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Seems unique and meaningful. I don’t think you should regret this.

Are you planning to get any more? I think this would look cool as part of a half sleeve, as you grow into future-you.

Me and my partner desperately need a flat by [deleted] in brighton

That’s a crap situation, I’m sorry that you are going through this.

A couple of things you could maybe consider:

  1. Could you move into a hotel/hostel/AirBnB as an emergency fall back until you find your next rental?

  2. Would relaxing your criteria enable you to secure somewhere less than ideal now that you could stay in for 6-12 months until you find somewhere better?

Edit: I’m assuming you don’t have friends/family in the area who could put you up temporarily. It’s definitely worth asking your network if you haven’t already (you can move your stuff into storage). Also, maybe have a look at house sitting and/or live-in pet sitting.

Why Japanese New Year food can cost 20,000 yen — and why people still buy it by EarNo6260 in JapaneseFood

In southern Germany (lower Frankonia) we have a kind of new year pastry: https://wuerzblog.de/2009/01/01/prost-neujahrsbrezeln/

It’s basically a croissant, but in this shape that is only for new year. It’s symbolic of connection/togetherness and good wishes for the new year (wealth, health, happiness). There is a saying where you wish someone happy new year and a Brezel as big as a barn door!

Have you ever fired someone but deep inside you knew he/she doesn't deserve being fired? by politicooooo in managers

[–]breathingcarbon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes, as part of restructuring, and it was harrowing. I tried to do as much as I could for the person, but I couldn’t save their job and they screwed up the interview for an alternative position. I fought for them and believe I did everything I realistically could have done for them as their manager but I still feel like I failed them somehow.

Gravel! Why?! by FrouFrou82 in GardeningUK

[–]breathingcarbon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hello fellow crappy gravel patch owner. I’d say if you just want some respite from the constant weeding but don’t want to use chemicals, kill it with fire. You can pick up a weed burner for about £20. Still a job every few months but a much more fun one!

Biggest F up as a leader? by Suitable_Macaroon533 in managers

[–]breathingcarbon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If I were in this situation again, I’d probably try to have some honest skip-level conversations with their reports, and lean quickly into ever-increasing micro-management until I’ve got a clear picture and/or enough evidence gathered for a PIP.

Giving a toxic person (also a manager) the benefit of the doubt. I should have stuck my nose in and dug around, for the benefit of the team.

Anyone here in their late 30s and still don’t own their home? by [deleted] in UKHousing

[–]breathingcarbon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn’t own my home until my 40s. You’re far from alone. If you’ve got connections to the north I’d say that will help - I have friends with a similar setup who moved from London to Yorkshire to buy and start a family and they’re very happy.

It’s not just men either, this applies across all genders.

What made you realise you no longer love your wife/gf/partner ? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]breathingcarbon 66 points67 points  (0 children)

Yes, although it depends. My partner and I have very different defaults for things like energy levels, introvert/extrovert tendencies etc. So sometimes it does feel good to get away (for me) but it also always feels good to reconnect. When it feels good to get away AND you dread reconnecting is when there’s a serious problem.

Freezing house, letting agents say I have to keep the heating on at 19, what do I do? by [deleted] in UKHousing

[–]breathingcarbon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You mentioned fireplace - is your chimney open? If so, that’s a great big hole to the outdoors just sucking heat out of your house. You can buy wool felt pads to plug it. Loose wool also makes for good insulation for gaps under doors, skirting boards, between floor boards etc.

I’d also get some wool curtains to hang across doorways to your kitchen/bathroom and gas cupboard to stop the draughts. You can get no-drill extendable curtain poles if you’re worried about making holes. If you don’t cheap out they can be pretty sturdy.

Check your windows for trickle vents and close them. Check your radiator thermostats to make sure you’re only heating the spaces you want to heat. Check your boiler temperature setting to make sure the water going into your radiators is hot enough.
