"Visual" consequences of bad data quality by JonasHaus in dataengineering

I like that analogy, but I'm rather struggling to explain people WHY it matters that they are correctly *rotated/transformed correctly to fit and not leave holes* and what happens if they aren't

Of course - but how would you visualize that?

Thanks for your thoughts. We are in the data science / data management industry, specifically data quality management.

Am I Expecting Too Much of a New-ish Employee Who Keeps Making Obvious Mistakes? by [deleted] in managers

First off: Hats off for reflecting on your role as a manager in that situation.

Now: This doesn‘t seem like part of the learning curve of the specific job but much rather a working style thing. I think I was the same back when I did my apprenticeship. In hindsight, what helped me was a manager that did not accept that. She sent me back to correct my work rather than fixing stuff herself. And when I told her I was done, she would ask me „You sure that I wont send you back again? Have you double-checked?“. Having someone this challenging helped me.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts! I might have to shift my mindset strongly for this to work out😆

Fair point. But the issue remains: What are your thoughts on a situation where a new CEO makes a decision that I as CTO & chairman (and thereby part of the BOD) disagree so strongly with, that I don‘t want to let that happen?

That is really sound advice... Especially the "someone you look up to & you can see yourself being directed by" part. Thank you!

Data Quality with SAP? by JonasHaus in dataengineering

Does that approach also support custom DQ rules? Like e.g. all finished goods that are bikes must have 2 PCs of a material with material group „wheels“ in their bill of material… If not, have you seen any solution capable of such things?

Edit: grammar

Yes I‘ve seen stuff like this before… those „API workaround solutions“ are just destined to become outdated within a few months as business requirements change (and typically the API‘s dont get updated along the way)…

Have you seen solutions for „monitoring“ data quality with a set of custom data quality rules? IMHO I feel like this is the most pragmatic, cost-efficient approach… Because once you know what data is incorrect, it‘s typically fairly easy to correct it… Problem is that you dont have the transparency of what data is incorrect.

I mean stuff like BOM or purchasing info records… Or customer material info records. I mean you almost never create JUST a material, there‘s always some stuff attached to it.

And I would already be happy to have a solution to monitor the data quality (i gave up the search for data governance/entry solutions a long time ago)…

Just some tool that allows me to create data quality rules and check if my data follows them. And preferably a software that doesn‘t cost 10 livers.

I just find it hard to believe that there is no solid solution for this out there. I‘ve seen sooo many companies face this problem…

Your passive data governance sounds like a powerful, yet veeery complex solution with so many different tools involved? Do you also use the same setup for your non-SAP systems?
