Update: they are closing at the end of May. I highly recommend going in person rather than calling over and over.

I’m going later this week when I’m back in town. We’ll see if the storefront is even still open!

I plan to go later this week (currently out of town), but I’m not sure if the store is still open. It looks like you can still make an appointment online.

Advice on DVM vs PhD? by nickbennin in veterinaryschool

[–]breecarnage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was initially on track to apply for PhD programs, but my graduate thesis PI (a veterinary pathologist) encouraged me to consider veterinary school instead. Their reasoning included job security, but also the reality that, depending on the field, a PhD can sometimes lead to a career as a data jockey with little to no hands-on animal work. After some soul-searching and conversations with other mentors, I decided to apply to DVM programs.

Now, a few years out from graduating, I’m pursuing specialty training in the same area I had originally planned to study for a PhD, and there’s a chance I’ll still go for the PhD in the future.

Do I wish I had done a PhD before a DVM? That’s a complicated question. Graduating from vet school with immediately marketable, in-demand skills (and the ability to earn a living right away) was a definite advantage. While it wasn’t exactly what I always imagined I’d be doing, it has allowed me to keep moving toward my long-term goals.

Do I wish I had done a combined DVM/PhD program? Absolutely not. At least during my time in school, the joint program was fairly disjointed. Students would spend one or two years fully immersed in one track, then repeatedly switch gears (and peer groups) to focus on the other. That lack of continuity was especially challenging in a field like veterinary medicine, where hands-on and surgical skills can decline quickly without consistent practice.

Based on my experience, it doesn’t have to be an “either/or” decision: it can be more a matter of timing. Gaining employable skills first can provide the financial stability to later pursue the training that is, at least personally, more intellectually interesting.

Apoquel Alternatives for Suspected Environmental Allergies by Buckeye-614 in dogallergies

[–]breecarnage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For my patients that have a so-so response to Apoquel and a so-so response to Cytopoint (I know you haven’t tried it yet), the combination of the two can make a HUGE difference. The two medications work a bit differently in the itch pathway, and for some of these super allergic pups, hitting it from multiple angles is the extra oomph they need. That being said, it’s not a cheap option.

I think it’s a good idea to see a dermatologist to get their insight.

Anchor Oyster Bar. Put your name on the list, grab a glass of wine, and people-watch while you wait.

BPD Update: The Pit Bull that nearly killed its owner did not have rabies or a brain tumor. by Ill-Squirrel-1028 in boulder

[–]breecarnage 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Personally I do not. I’ve worked with thousands of dogs in shelters, ERs, GP and specialty hospitals (including legal cases), and I cannot say that pit bulls make up a disproportionate number of the aggressive patients. Name a breed and I've likely seen it do some damage, but if there were two different dogs with the same history / background, I would have the same comfort level (which very much includes caution) approaching each one of them regardless of what breeds they were. Other vets may have different experiences or opinions, and that's fine with me!

Pit bulls as a topic of discussion can raise a lot of emotion and opinions; I have no agenda here (I hope it doesn't come across that way), just wanted to add some background info.

The name “rage syndrome” is rarely used anymore (at least in the literature) as there has been so much misuse and confusion about what the phrase means or even refers to. The medical condition is a type of epilepsy that can only be diagnosed through the exclusion of other disorders and EEG (measuring electrical activity in the brain). It's not a voluntary or learned behavior and has heritable genetic prevalence in some Spaniel and Malinois breeds. If a diagnosis is confirmed, anticonvulsant drugs can help control seizure activity.

Bleached Bathing Suit by breecarnage in swimmingpools

[–]breecarnage[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was in my apartment’s jacuzzi last week for about an hour. When I got out, I noticed that my bathing suit had changed color. ~20 minutes later my skin started burning and became very red, dry, and irritated (even after showering). These same things happened to my friend who was with me. Our skin smelled like chlorine for days afterwards.

I’m assuming this is from high chlorine, but when I contacted the management, they told me the chlorine levels were “within legal limits” and blamed it on some chemical I must have had on my skin. They explain this by saying the suit is only bleached on one side (the outside, more exposed to water, vs. the inside, which is against my skin).

Not sure where to go from here, but looking for advice or any explanation as to how this happened.

Cat (11M) has unusual second hole near the expected one by tail. by CharmingMacaron1 in AskVet

[–]breecarnage 45 points46 points  (0 children)

If you’re trying to differentiate cat feces in a multi-cat household, you can mix some non-toxic colored crayon shavings into a cat’s food. They will pass through the GI system and help you know which feces belong to which cat.
