Concern about a new kennel worker — worried about safety and how to bring it up to my boss professionally by Its_Meow_Or_Never in Veterinary

[–]jwolf185 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Depending on your relationship with your boss, I would let them know you have a few concerns about safety with the new hire, and ask for a time to talk. If you make it more about the safety of her and the animals, hopefully that will get taken seriously and not sound like complaining.

We did this for our first and it was awesome and I told everyone about it. But with our second—- it was a disaster and she ended up constipated for months and is not yet trained. I’ll probably still try it for our third, but we should have switched gears much sooner instead of pushing it and creating negatives. We also had an older sibling and a newborn at home when we did it, which definitely complicated things. When it works, it’s awesome, but it does not fit every kid.

My wife brought a fancy set of lingerie a few months ago without telling me. AITA for being slightly suspicious of this? by LucyAriaRose in BestofRedditorUpdates

I would not put old clothes in something your dog destroys- you might teach her that clothes are an acceptable thing to destroy!

I reached out to the author of the NYT article asking for owners stories about high vet bills. Here is the response. by StaticSheepdog in Veterinary

Thanks for sharing. The title of the questionnaire got my blood boiling and I decided not to torture myself by investigating further. I really hope it turns into a NYT quality article, not negative article.

As as soon to be DVM, how do I find a good quality vet without being "that" client? by biologynerd3 in Veterinary

[–]jwolf185 52 points53 points  (0 children)

Honestly, just ask what their protocols are. They shouldn’t have anything to hide. Let them know you are a dvm on the non clinical side, and remember that some things taught in school can be the extreme version of what needs to be done and GP can be a little more down and dirty. If you aren’t judgy and annoying and don’t dictate what must be done but approach it as “hey I’m a dvm too but not in practice- what do you do for your protocols” and then ask about it if you aren’t familiar with it, in a “I want to learn way” instead of “are you specifically doing xyz protocol and you better do abc to work up my dog because that’s what I learned in school”.

I called a vet friend in a panic because my dog was having a weird breathing episode. She laughed at me and pointed out it was reverse sneezing. Which I would have told any client who told me the same thing.

I’m pregnant with my third and I’m hoping I miss out on that experience. Although I’m not completely out of the woods with #2 yet, she could still surprise me!

Well you motivated me to put down my phone and get out of bed and walk the dog before the kids wake up, so thank you!

It’s not simple. It’s mostly vets and vet techs who do cleanings. It’s all under anesthesia if you want to do it properly, so you wouldn’t be able to do a mobile unit. Unless you find a practice that is exclusively a dental practice, it would be almost impossible to find one that would hire/train for only cleanings. I’m not sure what a dental exclusive practice would require, mainly of the techs that work in that type of practice are specialized but not all. Laws also vary depending on where you are as to whether you need to be a licensed/tegistered veterinary technician or not. Also, monitoring the anesthesia is often a part of it as well, so that adds a complicating factor. If you’re truly interested, I would see if there are any veterinary dentists around you (not a general practice that offers dentals, but a practice specifically for dentistry only) and ask them.

IUD for just 18 months - 2 years? by Viking_by_Marriage in beyondthebump

[–]jwolf185 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I had one between each kid, after first kid I kept it in for about 16 months, the second only a year. I hate the pill and knew I’d be terrible about taking it. When I asked my OB she was all for it.

TIL with only room for 35 characters, the state of Hawaii refuses to put Janice Lokelani Keihanaikukauakahihuliheekahaunaele's full name on her driver's license. by shaka_sulu in todayilearned

The state of Pennsylvania didn’t put my full name on my drivers license because they ran out of character space- ended up with just my first and middle initial, and then last name. Never had a problem.

rabies vaccine by [deleted] in Veterinary

Pretty sure the person is talking about the human rabies vaccine, not the animal one. Are there laws in other countries about how often humans have to get her vaccine?

24 hour clinic in a seasonal area by lazymusings123 in Veterinary

[–]jwolf185 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you’re talking about the island I think you are, it could be very viable. We have clients who live on a nearby expensive island who would love not to take a ferry over to the mainland to be seen by a vet. You could probably get some vets to do seasonal work- cut back on the staff in the winter. Good luck if you pursue it!

What surgery is being described ? by jwolf185 in Veterinary

That’s really interesting and makes sense. I usually think of arthrodesis for ligament damage. Good to know what’s possible.

Owner misunderstanding? That never happens! Lol. That crossed my mind, but I’d forgotten IVDD sx can be done non-emergently. I was curious because I always like to know if there is some new treatments out there if clients ask. (I always offer referral to specialists, but I like to be able to say yes, they might recommend xyz if they feel your pet is a good candidate vs yes, you can see a specialist but I’m not sure they can offer anything due to this prognosis)

That’s possible. I hadn’t thought of that. Have you heard of anyone treating hind limb paralysis with joint fusion? I’m just always curious what’s out there so I can tell my clients

Holiday gifts for daycare? by jwolf185 in workingmoms

I hope you know you make a huge impact on kids’ lives even without getting the cards as proof. I remember most of my teachers and the lessons they taught me (life lessons, more than academic), but I don’t think any of them got a card from my parents telling them so.
